Chapter 9: The Enemy Wearing A Familiar Face

Nobody slept that night.

Not me.

Not Daniel.

Not Lena.

We stayed in my apartment surrounded by evidence that destroyed everything we believed.

Three years of lies.

Three years of missing pieces.

Three years of people protecting secrets while I lived inside a fake reality.

The worst part wasn’t discovering that someone had betrayed me.

The worst part was realizing I didn’t know who.

I sat at the kitchen table staring at Marcus’s phone.

The video kept replaying in my mind.

I disappeared because I loved you enough to leave.

I hated those words.

Because they sounded like Marcus.

And because some part of me understood them.

Marcus had always believed he could solve every problem alone.

He carried stress like it was his responsibility.

He protected people even when they didn’t ask.

But there was something I couldn’t forgive.

He chose silence.

He chose to let me break.

Daniel sat across from me.

For once, he had no explanation.

No excuse.

No perfect words.

Just exhaustion.

“Tell me the truth,” I said.

He looked up.

“I am.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You’re telling me pieces.””

He looked away.

And I knew.

“You still have something.””

Daniel was quiet.

Then he reached into his jacket.

He placed a small envelope on the table.

“I was going to destroy this.””

My stomach tightened.

“What is it?””

“Something Marcus gave me before he disappeared.””

I stared at him.

“You had something from him?””

“Yes.””

“And you hid it?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

My anger exploded.

“Why?””

“Because I thought it would get you killed.””

“Everyone says that.””

“I know.””

His voice cracked.

“But this time, it’s true.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten note.

Marcus’s handwriting.

My heart broke immediately.

Only one sentence.

*Daniel, if anything happens to me, don’t let Nia trust anyone. Not even you.*

I looked up.

Daniel looked devastated.

“He didn’t trust you.””

“No.””

“Then why did he leave it with you?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Because he knew I would be the only person willing to protect you.””

I hated that the answer made sense.

“What happened that night?””

Daniel looked down.

“I met Marcus by the river.””

“The night he disappeared?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“He came to me because he found out something.””

“What?””

Daniel’s eyes met mine.

“He found out the person stealing money wasn’t working alone.””

I leaned forward.

“Who was helping them?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then said:

“Your sister.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Lena.

She immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Daniel continued.

“I don’t know if she was helping willingly.””

“That’s not true,” Lena said.

Her voice was shaking.

Daniel looked at her.

“Then tell her.””

Lena looked at me.

And I knew.

There was something she hadn’t told me.

“What?””

She started crying.

“I didn’t help them.””

“Then what happened?””

“I found out too late.””

“About what?””

She looked at Marcus’s phone.

“He was being followed.””

“By who?””

Lena whispered:

“By someone inside our family.””

The words made my entire body freeze.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

Then the front door opened.

All three of us turned.

A man stood there.

Older.

Calm.

Completely comfortable.

Like he belonged there.

My heart stopped.

Because I knew him.

I had known him my entire life.

“Dad?””

My father looked at me.

And smiled sadly.

“I was hoping you would never find out.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stood immediately.

Lena covered her mouth.

I couldn’t move.

My father stepped inside.

The man who taught me how to ride a bike.

The man who walked me down every difficult road.

The man I trusted more than anyone.

He looked at Marcus’s phone.

Then at me.

“I’m sorry, Nia.””

My voice barely worked.

“Sorry for what?””

His expression changed.

And for the first time in my life…

I saw fear in my father’s eyes.

“Sorry that Marcus was right.””

My heartbeat stopped.

“Right about what?””

He looked at everyone in the room.

Then whispered:

“The person who destroyed Marcus’s life…”

A pause.

“The person who framed you…”

Another pause.

“Was never outside your family.””

May you like

He looked directly at me.

“It was me.””
