Chapter 11: The Price of a Daughter
Damian watched the video three times.
Alexander stood behind Isabella, looking older and thinner than he had in the blue room. His expression was calm, almost affectionate, as he held the silver crescent pendant between his fingers.
Isabella was crying.
"Damian," she whispered into the camera.
"Please don't come.""
Alexander gently touched her shoulder.
"Your brother is coming whether you want him to or not.""
The video ended.
Damian placed the phone on the table.
"Where's Pier 27?""
Marcus answered immediately.
"About twenty minutes from here.""
"How many entrances?""
"Three. Two roads and one loading dock facing the water.""
"How many men can Arthur have there?""
"At least twenty.""
Ethan stepped forward.
"Then we take thirty.""
Damian shook his head.
"No.""
"Damian—"
"This isn't a war we can win by bringing more guns.""
Ethan looked at him incredulously.
"Since when?""
"Since I learned that every person we've trusted has been hiding something.""
Ethan's expression hardened.
"You're suggesting we go in alone?""
"I'm suggesting we stop behaving exactly how Father expects us to behave.""
Sofia stood near the table.
"Then let me go.""
Damian turned.
"Absolutely not.""
"They asked for me.""
"Which is why you're staying here.""
"Isabella is my friend. My mother spent years trying to protect her.""
"And I'm not sacrificing you to rescue someone else.""
Sofia stepped closer.
"You don't get to decide whose life matters more.""
Damian stared at her.
The argument was interrupted by Margaret.
"She's right.""
He turned.
"Mother.""
"Elena trusted Sofia with something important. Whatever is inside that pendant may be the only thing that can expose Alexander.""
Damian looked at his mother.
"You want me to let her walk into a trap?""
"No. I want you to understand that she's been living with this danger far longer than you have.""
Sofia lowered her eyes.
"I don't need you to protect me from the truth, Damian.""
He didn't answer.
Then Ethan spoke.
"We need a different plan.""
Marcus brought up a map of the harbor on his tablet.
"There's an old railway tunnel beneath the warehouse. It was sealed after the port renovations, but the maintenance entrance is still accessible.""
Damian studied it.
"Can we get inside?""
"Yes. But there's a problem.""
"What?""
"The tunnel exits beneath the main loading platform. Anyone inside the warehouse will hear us.""
Ethan pointed to a smaller structure on the map.
"What about this?""
"Old customs office," Marcus replied.
"It connects to the warehouse through an underground passage.""
Damian nodded.
"That's our entrance.""
He turned toward Sofia.
"You stay with Marcus until we reach Isabella.""
She shook her head.
"No.""
"Sofia.""
"I'm going with you.""
Damian looked at Ethan.
His brother shrugged.
"She's going to argue until you give up.""
Damian exhaled.
"Fine. But you stay behind me.""
Sofia nodded.
At 6:30 a.m., the convoy approached the harbor.
The city was beginning to wake. Delivery trucks moved along the waterfront, fishermen unloaded their catches, and the smell of salt and diesel hung in the air.
Pier 27 stood at the far end of an abandoned industrial road.
The warehouse was enormous.
Its windows had been painted black, and several security cameras watched the surrounding streets.
Damian stepped out.
He looked toward the building.
"Marcus, report.""
"Two men at the front gate. Three near the loading dock. More inside.""
"Can you disable the cameras?""
"Already done.""
Ethan checked his weapon.
"Let's finish this.""
They entered through the old customs office.
The passage smelled of damp concrete and rust. Water dripped from overhead pipes.
Sofia walked between Damian and Ethan.
After several minutes, they reached a steel door.
Damian slowly opened it.
The warehouse was dimly lit.
Rows of shipping containers formed narrow corridors across the floor.
A single chair stood beneath a hanging light.
Isabella was tied to it.
The moment she saw Sofia, her eyes widened.
"Sofia?""
Sofia took a step forward.
Damian caught her arm.
"Wait.""
A voice came from above.
"Welcome home, nephew.""
Arthur appeared on a metal staircase.
He wore a dark suit and carried a glass of whiskey.
Behind him stood Alexander.
And between them was Victor Cross.
Alive.
Damian's eyes narrowed.
"You're getting predictable.""
Victor smiled.
"You're getting careless.""
Ethan raised his gun.
"Stay where you are.""
Arthur laughed.
"Put that down, boy. You have no idea how many people are aiming at you.""
Several red laser points appeared across the warehouse walls.
Marcus whispered through Damian's earpiece.
"Boss, we're surrounded.""
Damian didn't move.
Arthur walked down the stairs.
"I see you brought the girl.""
Sofia stepped forward.
"I'm here.""
Alexander looked at her.
For a moment, his expression softened.
"Your mother had the same eyes.""
Sofia's jaw tightened.
"Don't talk about my mother.""
"She was a remarkable woman.""
"You destroyed her life.""
Alexander sighed.
"She made choices.""
"She chose to protect her daughter.""
"She chose to steal from me.""
Damian interrupted.
"Enough. What do you want?""
Arthur smiled.
"The key.""
Damian held it up.
"This?""
"Yes.""
He tossed it across the floor.
Victor caught it.
He examined the number.
"Twenty-seven.""
Arthur nodded.
"Excellent.""
He turned toward Alexander.
"Now we can finish what we started.""
Damian frowned.
"What does the key open?""
Arthur looked at him.
"Nothing.""
Sofia's eyes widened.
"That's what my mother said.""
Arthur smiled.
"Your mother was smarter than she looked.""
He turned toward Isabella.
"Stand up.""
Victor cut her restraints.
Isabella stumbled.
Sofia rushed toward her.
The two women embraced.
"You came," Isabella whispered.
"Of course I did.""
Damian watched them.
Something about the exchange bothered him.
He looked at the pendant in Alexander's hand.
"Why do you need the necklace?""
Alexander smiled.
"Because the key was never meant to open a door.""
He pulled the pendant apart.
A tiny compartment opened.
Inside was a microchip.
"The original ownership records. Every transaction. Every signature. Every secret.""
Damian stared.
"That's what you wanted.""
"That's what your grandmother wanted to destroy.""
Arthur stepped forward.
"And now it belongs to us.""
Sofia suddenly laughed.
Everyone turned.
Arthur frowned.
"What's amusing?""
She looked at the pendant.
"You're holding the wrong one.""
Alexander's smile disappeared.
"What?""
Sofia reached into her pocket.
She removed another silver crescent.
Identical to the one in his hand.
"I switched them when you were talking.""
For the first time, Arthur looked genuinely furious.
"Give it to me.""
Sofia stepped behind Damian.
"Come and get it.""
A gunshot exploded.
The warehouse lights went dark.
Someone screamed.
Then the emergency lighting flickered on.
Damian turned.
Isabella was gone.
So was Sofia.
He looked toward the loading dock.
A black vehicle was speeding through the open gate.
And through the rear window, he saw Sofia pounding against the glass.
Damian raised his weapon.
But Ethan grabbed his arm.
"Don't shoot!""
The vehicle disappeared into the morning traffic.
Damian turned toward Arthur.
"Where did they take her?""
Arthur smiled.
"Somewhere your father should have sent her years ago.""
Damian pressed his earpiece.
"Marcus! Follow that vehicle!""
No response.
He tried again.
Nothing.
Then Victor stepped out from behind a shipping container.
He held a phone in his hand.
"Your security team has been very helpful, Damian.""
Damian's eyes narrowed.
"What did you do?""
Victor smiled.
May you like
"I gave them a better offer.""
And somewhere outside the warehouse, a second explosion shook the harbor.
