Chapter 7: The Brother Who Knew Too Much

I arrived at the restaurant twenty minutes early.
I told myself it was because I wanted to be prepared.
That wasn’t the truth.
The truth was that I didn’t know what else to do with myself.
Waiting was the hardest part.
When you know someone has answers you’ve been searching for, every second feels heavier.
I sat in the corner booth, staring at the empty chair across from me.
The chair where my brother would sit.
Daniel.
My older brother.
The person who had once been the closest person in my life.
When we were kids, people used to say we were inseparable.
If one of us got into trouble, the other one was usually there.
If one of us succeeded, the other one was the first person to celebrate.
After our parents died, it was just us.
Two brothers trying to figure out adulthood without a guide.
But then life changed.
Marriage.
Money.
Arguments.
Things we thought were small at the time became walls between us.
By the time Claire died, Daniel and I barely spoke.
And now, years later, I was sitting there wondering if the person I had pushed away had been holding the truth the entire time.
At exactly noon, he walked in.
He looked older.
Not just older in age.
Older in a way that came from carrying something heavy.
His hair had more gray.
His face had more lines.
But his eyes were the same.
The same eyes that used to look at me like I was his little brother who needed protecting.
He sat down.
Neither of us spoke for a moment.
Finally, he said:
“You found out.””
It wasn’t a question.
I looked at him.
“How long were you planning to keep it from me?””
He looked away.
“That depends on what you mean.””
I almost laughed.
“Don’t do that.””
“Do what?””
“Pretend you don’t know.””
Daniel sighed.
“I knew this day would come.””
I placed the phone on the table.
His expression changed.
“You have it.””
“Yes.””
“Who gave it to you?””
“My son.””
His eyebrows lifted.
“Ethan?””
I nodded.
“He recorded you and Vanessa.””
Daniel looked down.
For a moment, he didn’t speak.
Then he whispered:
“Ethan shouldn’t have had to do that.””
I felt my anger rise.
“No. He shouldn’t have.””
Daniel looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
I shook my head.
“I don’t need apologies.””
“What do you need?””
“The truth.””
He leaned back.
For several seconds, he stared out the window.
Then he said:
“Your wife and I knew each other before you met her.””
“I know.””
“You know that?””
“She told me.””
His face changed.
“She told you?””
“After I found out she knew Claire.””
Daniel became still.
“She told you about Claire?””
“Not everything.””
A bitter smile crossed his face.
“She never does.””
That sentence bothered me.
Because it sounded like someone who had known Vanessa longer than I had.
“What happened between you two?””
Daniel looked at the table.
“Nothing.””
I stared at him.
“That’s not believable.””
“Not that kind of nothing.””
“Then what kind?””
He took a breath.
“Vanessa knew Claire because Claire asked her for help.””
I frowned.
“Help with what?””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“The truth.””
I waited.
“About me.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why would Claire need help because of you?””
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
And for the first time, I saw something in his expression.
Regret.
“I made mistakes.””
“That’s vague.””
“It’s the truth.””
“No. It’s what people say when they don’t want to explain.””
He looked at me.
“You think I hurt Claire.””
“I think you know something about the night she died.””
The color left his face.
“You heard that from Vanessa.””
“Yes.””
He closed his eyes.
“Of course.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means Vanessa still doesn’t know everything.””
I leaned forward.
“Then tell me.””
Daniel was quiet.
Then he said:
“Claire thought I was stealing from you.””
The words shocked me.
“What?””
“She thought I was taking money from the business.””
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“I know.””
“Did you?””
Daniel looked down.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
“You did?””
“I borrowed money.””
“Without telling me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He rubbed his forehead.
“Because I was desperate.””
I felt anger rising.
“You could have asked me.””
“I know.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
His voice cracked slightly.
“Because I was ashamed.””
The answer silenced me.
Because I understood shame.
Everyone did.
The things people hide aren’t always because they don’t care.
Sometimes they hide them because they care too much about how others see them.
But that didn’t erase what happened.
“What did Claire find?””
Daniel swallowed.
“She found the records.””
“And?””
“She confronted me.””
“When?””
“The night she died.””
The room went silent.
My heart started pounding.
“Tell me everything.””
Daniel looked at me.
“I went to your house that night.””
I froze.
“You were there?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I was ashamed.””
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
I stared at him.
“What happened?””
Daniel took a deep breath.
“Claire was angry.””
“She had a right to be.””
“Yes.””
“What happened next?””
“We argued.””
“About the money?””
“Yes.””
“Did you hurt her?””
His eyes filled with pain.
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
Too quickly.
But I believed the emotion behind it.
“Then what?””
“She told me she was going to tell you everything.””
“About the money?””
“And about Vanessa.””
My heart stopped.
“Why Vanessa?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because Claire knew Vanessa had feelings for you.””
I froze.
“What?””
Daniel nodded.
“She told Claire.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
“Is it?””
I thought back.
The timing.
The way Vanessa entered my life.
The way she seemed to understand everything about me.
The way she knew my pain.
My grief.
My past.
I had always thought it was fate.
But now I wondered.
“How did Claire know?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“Because Vanessa told her.””
I felt sick.
“She admitted it?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because Claire confronted her.””
The room felt smaller.
“What happened after that?””
Daniel looked at his hands.
“Claire said she didn’t trust Vanessa.””
“Why?””
“Because Vanessa was getting too close to your life.””
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t mean anything.””
Daniel nodded.
“Maybe not.””
“Then why are you telling me?””
“Because you deserve to know everything.””
I stared at him.
“Did Vanessa cause Claire’s death?””
Daniel immediately shook his head.
“No.””
The answer was clear.
Certain.
“Then what happened?””
Daniel looked away.
“Claire was planning to tell you something.””
“What?””
“That she had evidence.””
“Evidence of what?””
“Of someone manipulating things around you.””
My heart raced.
“Who?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
I stood slightly.
“Daniel.””
He looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
I didn’t believe him.
“You do.””
“No.””
“Then why are you afraid?””
His expression changed.
Because I was right.
He was afraid.
Finally, he said:
“Because the person Claire was investigating wasn’t Vanessa.””
My blood went cold.
“Who?””
Daniel looked at me.
And whispered:
“You.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
“Claire thought someone was using you.””
“For what?””
Daniel looked toward the window.
“For your money.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
I sat back down.
“No.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“I know how it sounds.””
“No. You don’t understand.””
“I do.””
“My wife died.””
“I know.””
“She was my family.””
“I know.””
“And now you’re telling me she suspected someone was manipulating me?””
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“Who?””
Daniel looked at me.
“That’s the part I never found out.””
“Then why did Vanessa know?””
“Because Claire told her.””
I looked down at the phone.
The recordings.
The secrets.
The lies.
Everything was connected.
But I still couldn’t see the whole picture.
“Why would Vanessa hide this?””
Daniel’s answer was quiet.
“Because she was afraid you would find out she wasn’t the person you thought she was.””
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Before Daniel could answer, his phone rang.
He glanced at the screen.
His face changed.
“What?””
“What is it?””
He didn’t answer.
He stood up.
“We need to go.””
I frowned.
“Go where?””
He looked at me.
“It’s about Ethan.””
My heart dropped.
“What happened?””
Daniel showed me the message.
One sentence.
From an unknown number.
“Stop digging, or the next recording won’t be the only thing you lose.””
For a moment, neither of us moved.
Then my phone buzzed.
A new message.
Same number.
I opened it.
There was a photo attached.
A picture of Maya leaving school.
Taken that morning.
My blood turned cold.
Because whoever sent it had been watching my daughter.
Daniel looked at my face.
“What did they send?””
I couldn’t speak.
I just showed him.
His expression changed instantly.
And then he said the one thing I never expected to hear.
“They know about the children.””
I stared at the picture.
The person who had been hiding the truth was no longer hiding.
May you like
They were warning me.
And now, the secret that destroyed my first family was threatening to destroy my second one.
