Chapter 6: The Night the Mansion Lost Its Voice
Adrian had never moved so fast in his life.
The darkness inside the mansion swallowed everything.
The expensive lights.
The polished floors.
The familiar hallways.
Everything that once represented safety had suddenly become a maze.
But Adrian did not think about the darkness.
He only heard one thing.
His daughter screaming.
“Lily!””
His voice echoed through the hallway.
No answer.
His heart slammed against his chest.
Behind him, security guards rushed inside with flashlights.
“Check the bedrooms!”” Adrian ordered.
The command came naturally.
Years of leadership.
Years of making decisions under pressure.
But this was different.
This was not a company crisis.
Not a negotiation.
Not a problem he could solve with money.
This was his child.
He reached the staircase.
Then he heard another sound.
A small cry.
“Noah?””
He ran upstairs.
The bedroom door was open.
Inside, Lily stood beside the bed holding her baby brother.
She was shaking.
But she was not crying.
She was protecting him.
Again.
Adrian rushed toward them.
“What happened?””
Lily grabbed his hand.
“Someone was here.””
The words froze him.
“Who?””
She pointed toward the window.
“The man.””
Adrian looked.
The curtains moved slightly.
The window was locked.
But on the floor beneath it was something that did not belong.
A small black device.
Adrian immediately stepped back.
“Don’t touch it.””
The security team entered.
One guard examined it carefully.
“Camera.””
Adrian’s face changed.
“A camera?””
The guard nodded.
“Small surveillance device.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Someone had not just watched the house from outside.
Someone had been watching from inside.
Adrian turned toward the hallway.
Every instinct told him the same thing.
Ethan was not just threatening them.
He had access.
He had help.
And he had been closer than Adrian imagined.
The security system returned twenty minutes later.
The outage had lasted exactly seven minutes.
Seven minutes.
Enough time for someone to enter.
Enough time to scare the children.
Enough time to prove they could.
Thomas arrived shortly after midnight.
He examined the device.
His expression became serious.
“Adrian.””
“What?””
“This wasn’t installed today.””
Adrian stared at him.
“What do you mean?””
Thomas looked at the device.
“It has been here for weeks.””
The room went silent.
Weeks.
Not hours.
Not days.
Weeks.
Adrian looked at Lily.
She was sitting on the bed holding Noah.
Weeks of someone watching her.
Weeks of someone knowing her routine.
Weeks of someone invading the place where she was supposed to feel safe.
“Find who installed it.””
Thomas nodded.
“We will.””
“No.””
Adrian’s voice became colder.
“I want to know tonight.””
Thomas understood.
“I’ll use every resource.””
After Thomas left, Adrian stayed with the children.
He refused to leave.
Lily eventually fell asleep.
But even in sleep, her hand remained wrapped around his finger.
Like she was afraid he would disappear.
Adrian watched her for a long time.
Then his phone vibrated.
A message.
Unknown number.
He opened it.
A video.
His stomach tightened.
He pressed play.
The recording showed the mansion hallway.
Taken from the hidden camera.
The date was two weeks earlier.
The angle faced the children’s bedroom.
Then Ethan appeared.
Walking through the hallway.
Inside Adrian’s house.
Adrian stopped breathing.
The video continued.
Ethan stood outside Lily’s door.
He did not enter.
He simply watched.
Then he whispered something.
The audio was low.
Adrian increased the volume.
“I wonder if your father knows what kind of family he really has.””
The video ended.
Adrian stared at the screen.
A second message appeared.
*“Ask your mother what she never told you.””*
Adrian froze.
His mother?
His mother had died years ago.
What could she possibly have hidden?
The next morning, Adrian contacted someone he had not spoken to in years.
His uncle, Richard Carter.
The only person left who knew the history of Adrian’s family.
They met at an old private club outside the city.
Richard was older now.
Slower.
But his eyes remained sharp.
“You look like a man who found a ghost,” Richard said.
Adrian placed the memory card on the table.
“I need answers.””
Richard looked at it.
“Where did you get this?””
“From Vanessa.””
That name changed his expression.
“She finally told you?””
Adrian leaned forward.
“What does that mean?””
Richard looked away.
“Your father had enemies.””
“My father?””
“Yes.””
Adrian frowned.
“My father was a businessman.””
“Your father was a businessman who made powerful people angry.””
Richard continued.
“He built the company aggressively. He exposed fraud. He destroyed partnerships that hurt innocent people.””
Adrian knew some of that.
But not all.
“What does Ethan know?””
Richard became quiet.
“That name…”
“You know him?””
“No.””
The hesitation bothered Adrian.
“You do.””
Richard sighed.
“Not personally.””
“Then what?””
Richard looked at him.
“Ethan’s father worked for your grandfather.””
Adrian felt the pieces shifting.
“Worked how?””
“As a financial advisor.””
“And?””
“He was removed after evidence of fraud was discovered.””
Adrian stared.
“What happened?””
“He lost everything.””
“And he blamed my family.””
Richard nodded.
“Some people accept their mistakes. Others spend their lives searching for someone to blame.””
Adrian looked down.
“Ethan wants revenge.””
“Yes.””
“But why involve my children?””
Richard’s expression became serious.
“Because revenge is rarely about hurting someone directly.””
“It’s about making them suffer.””
Adrian said nothing.
Richard continued.
“Your father once said something I never forgot.””
“What?””
“‘A person can survive losing money. They can survive losing power. But losing the people they love changes them forever.’”
The words stayed with Adrian.
Ethan understood that.
He was not attacking the company.
He was attacking Adrian’s heart.
When Adrian returned home, he found Vanessa waiting in the living room.
He almost walked past her.
Then she spoke.
“I know what Ethan is planning.””
Adrian stopped.
“What?””
Vanessa stood slowly.
“He doesn’t want your company.””
“You said he did.””
“He does.””
She looked at him.
“But that’s not the final goal.””
“What is?””
Her voice trembled.
“He wants you to destroy yourself.””
Adrian stared.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa took a breath.
“He wants you to make mistakes. Public mistakes. Emotional decisions.””
“Why?””
“Because he has been building a case.””
“A case?””
“Yes.””
She looked ashamed.
“He wants to prove you are unstable. That you are dangerous. That you cannot protect your children.””
Adrian understood.
Ethan did not just want revenge.
He wanted Adrian to lose everything.
His company.
His reputation.
His children.
The court.
Everything.
“Why tell me now?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Because I saw what he did to Lily.””
A long silence followed.
“I thought I was protecting myself.””
She swallowed.
“But I became the person I was afraid of.””
Adrian did not forgive her.
Not yet.
Maybe not ever.
But he saw something.
A person who finally understood the damage they caused.
“Where is Ethan now?””
Vanessa looked toward the window.
“I don’t know.””
Then her phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her face turned white.
Adrian noticed.
“Who is it?””
She showed him.
Unknown number.
The same pattern.
Adrian answered.
No one spoke.
Then Ethan’s voice came through.
“You found the old story.””
Adrian tightened his grip on the phone.
“This ends now.””
Ethan laughed.
“No, Adrian.””
A pause.
“This started before you were even born.””
Then came the sound of something in the background.
A child’s toy.
Adrian’s blood ran cold.
“Where are you?””
Another laugh.
“You should ask yourself a better question.””
The line went silent.
Then Ethan whispered:
“Who else in your family knew?””
The call ended.
Adrian looked toward the hallway.
Toward Lily’s room.
Toward the life he had spent years protecting.
Because now he understood.
The danger was not only outside the mansion.
May you like
It was buried in the history of his own family.
And Ethan was about to reveal a truth that could change everything.
