Chapter 8: The Truth Greg Was Too Afraid to Tell
Richard Whitmore stepped into the house like he still belonged there.
That was the first thing Eleanor noticed.
Not his expensive coat.
Not the calm expression on his face.
Not the fact that he had walked into a room filled with people who no longer trusted him.
It was the confidence.
The same confidence he had carried for twenty years.
The confidence of a man who believed every secret had a price.
Every person had a weakness.
Every mistake could be controlled.
But Eleanor was no longer the woman he remembered.
She didn’t step aside.
She didn’t offer him coffee.
She didn’t ask if he was okay.
She simply stood there.
Watching him.
Richard smiled slightly.
“You’re angry.””
Eleanor’s voice was cold.
“You lied to me for twenty years.””
The smile faded.
“I did what I had to do.””
The answer shocked her.
Not because it was unexpected.
Because he said it without shame.
No apology.
No denial.
Just a statement.
As if betrayal was a reasonable choice.
Caleb moved closer.
Richard noticed.
“Still protecting people, Caleb?””
The veteran’s eyes narrowed.
“Still hiding behind others, Richard?””
For the first time, Richard’s expression changed.
A flash of irritation.
Gone almost immediately.
But Eleanor saw it.
She had spent decades watching people.
She knew when someone was pretending.
“Why are you here?”” she asked.
Richard looked at her.
“Because this has gone too far.””
“You mean because I found the truth?””
“I mean because you don’t understand what you’ve uncovered.””
Eleanor almost laughed.
“That’s what everyone says when they don’t want someone else to know something.””
Richard sighed.
“You always were more stubborn than Daniel.””
The mention of her husband’s name made her heart tighten.
“Do not use Daniel’s name like you knew him.””
Richard looked surprised.
Then hurt.
A performance.
A very convincing one.
“I loved my brother.””
“No.””
Eleanor shook her head.
“You loved being his brother.””
The words landed harder than she expected.
Richard stared at her.
For the first time, she saw something underneath the calm.
Resentment.
Years of it.
“You have no idea what it was like.””
“What?””
“Living next to Daniel.””
The room became silent.
Richard continued.
“Everyone saw the hero. The perfect soldier. The man who saved lives.””
His voice grew sharper.
“But nobody saw what he took.””
Eleanor frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
Richard laughed quietly.
“Of course you don’t know.””
Caleb stepped forward.
“Careful, Richard.””
But Richard ignored him.
“Daniel made decisions. He judged people. He decided who deserved forgiveness and who didn’t.””
Eleanor stared.
“You’re talking about Greg.””
Richard’s eyes moved toward her.
A small smile appeared.
“Finally.””
The word made her uncomfortable.
“You used my son.””
“No.””
Richard shook his head.
“Greg used himself.””
“Stop.””
“He wanted his father’s approval. He wanted to prove he was worthy.””
Eleanor’s voice rose.
“And you knew that.””
“Yes.””
The honesty was frightening.
Richard didn’t even try to hide it.
“I knew exactly what Greg wanted.””
“Love?””
Richard looked at her.
“Respect.””
The answer revealed everything.
Richard never understood Daniel’s relationship with Greg.
He saw everything as power.
Status.
Recognition.
“You made him believe Daniel hated him.””
“I showed him reality.””
“No.””
Eleanor stepped closer.
“You showed him what you wanted him to see.””
Richard said nothing.
Because she was right.
Margaret remained near the doorway.
Quiet.
Watching her husband.
For years, she had lived beside Richard.
And Eleanor realized something.
Margaret wasn’t afraid of Richard because she had just discovered what he was.
She was afraid because she had known all along.
“How long?”” Eleanor asked.
Margaret looked at her.
“How long did you know who Richard was?””
The older woman lowered her eyes.
“Longer than I should have.””
Richard turned.
“Margaret.””
One word.
But it carried a warning.
She flinched.
And Eleanor noticed.
“Did he threaten you?””
“No.””
Margaret answered too quickly.
Then corrected herself.
“Yes.””
Richard looked away.
Almost annoyed.
Not guilty.
Annoyed.
“Richard,” Caleb said quietly.
“You don’t understand.””
Richard looked at him.
“You never understood.””
Caleb stepped closer.
“I understood enough.””
“No.””
Richard smiled.
“You knew Daniel.””
A pause.
“But I knew the family.””
Those words disturbed Eleanor.
Because Richard believed he had ownership over them.
Not love.
Ownership.
Eleanor’s phone rang.
Everyone looked.
The screen showed Greg.
Richard’s eyes moved toward it.
A small reaction.
But enough.
“You’re afraid of that call.””
Richard smiled.
“I’m afraid of nothing.””
Eleanor answered.
“Greg?””
His voice came immediately.
“Mom.””
He sounded panicked.
“Where are you?””
“I’m at Margaret’s.””
Silence.
Then:
“Richard is there?””
“Yes.””
A sharp breath.
“Mom, listen to me carefully.””
Richard stepped forward.
Eleanor turned away from him.
“What?””
“Do not let him talk you into anything.””
Richard’s expression hardened.
“Greg knows exactly what happened.””
Eleanor looked at Richard.
Then back at the phone.
“Tell me.””
Greg was quiet.
“Mom…”
“Tell me.””
Another pause.
Then he said:
“Dad wasn’t investigating Richard because of the money.””
Eleanor frowned.
“What do you mean?””
“He found something else.””
Richard’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Caleb saw it too.
“What else?”” Eleanor asked.
Greg’s voice dropped.
“He found out Richard had been manipulating people for years.””
“Manipulating?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“To control them.””
Eleanor looked at Richard.
The man standing in front of her suddenly seemed smaller.
Not less dangerous.
Just less powerful.
“Greg.””
“Yes?””
“What did you do?””
Silence.
Then:
“I helped him.””
Eleanor closed her eyes.
The words she expected.
Still painful.
“How?””
Greg took a shaky breath.
“Richard asked me to move information.””
“Information?””
“Documents. Files. Things Dad had collected.””
“Why?””
“He said he needed them hidden until he could fix the situation.””
“And you believed him.””
“Yes.””
“Greg.””
“I know.””
His voice cracked.
“I know how stupid it sounds.””
“No.””
Eleanor’s voice softened.
“It sounds like you were scared.””
“Yes.””
“But you still chose.””
Another silence.
“Yes.””
That honesty hurt.
But it mattered.
Because this time Greg wasn’t making excuses.
He was finally accepting what he had done.
“What happened after Dad died?”” Eleanor asked.
Greg was quiet.
Too quiet.
“Greg?””
“There was someone else.””
Everyone in the room froze.
Richard’s face changed.
“Who?””
Eleanor looked at him.
The fact that Richard asked made her realize something.
He didn’t know.
Or he was pretending not to.
Greg continued.
“Dad had someone helping him.””
“Who?””
“I don’t know her name.””
“Her?””
“Yes.””
A woman.
Eleanor’s eyes moved toward Margaret.
But Margaret looked confused.
Not guilty.
Confused.
“Where did you meet her?”” Eleanor asked.
“Dad introduced us once.””
“Who was she?””
Greg hesitated.
Then:
“She worked with veterans.””
Caleb looked at Eleanor.
A strange expression crossed his face.
“Greg.””
“Yes?””
“What did she look like?””
Another pause.
“Brown hair. Early forties. Always carried a notebook.””
Caleb went completely still.
Eleanor noticed.
“What?””
Caleb looked at her.
“I know who she is.””
Everyone turned.
“Who?””
Caleb’s face changed.
“She was Daniel’s final witness.””
Richard stepped forward.
“What witness?””
Caleb looked at him.
“The one you tried to erase.””
The room became silent.
For the first time, Richard looked afraid.
Not angry.
Not confident.
Afraid.
And Eleanor understood.
The woman.
The missing piece.
The person Daniel trusted.
The person who knew everything.
She was still alive.
“What is her name?”” Eleanor asked.
Caleb hesitated.
“Anna Reed.””
The name meant nothing to Eleanor.
But Richard reacted.
His hand tightened.
Only for a second.
But everyone saw.
“You know her,” Eleanor said.
Richard looked at her.
“No.””
The answer came too fast.
Caleb laughed bitterly.
“You were never good at lying when you were scared.””
Richard’s expression darkened.
“Where is she?””
Eleanor noticed.
He asked where.
Not who.
Not why.
Where.
He knew exactly who Anna Reed was.
The room exploded into movement.
Richard suddenly stepped toward the hallway.
Caleb blocked him.
“Move.””
“No.””
“This doesn’t involve you.””
Caleb smiled.
“You said that twenty years ago too.””
Richard looked at him.
“You have no idea what you’re protecting.””
Caleb’s voice lowered.
“I’m protecting the truth.””
Richard laughed.
“The truth?””
He looked around the room.
“You people still believe that matters.””
Eleanor stared.
“What does that mean?””
Richard turned toward her.
“It means your husband wasn’t the hero you think he was.””
“Stop.””
“No.””
His voice sharpened.
“You want the truth? Fine.””
He pointed toward the photograph.
“Daniel made mistakes.””
Eleanor said nothing.
“He hurt people.””
“Everyone makes mistakes.””
Richard smiled.
“But not everyone hides them.””
The words created doubt.
Small.
Dangerous doubt.
Because that was what Richard wanted.
Not to prove he was innocent.
To make everyone question Daniel.
Eleanor recognized it now.
The same strategy he used on Greg.
Destroy trust.
Create confusion.
Then take control.
“You don’t get to rewrite him,” she said.
Richard looked at her.
“He already did that himself.””
Before Eleanor could answer, the lights went out.
The house fell into darkness.
Someone moved.
A chair scraped.
A door opened.
Then a voice came from the hallway.
Not Richard.
Not Caleb.
Not Greg.
A woman’s voice.
Calm.
Certain.
“Richard.””
Everyone froze.
The lights flickered back on.
A woman stood at the entrance.
Brown hair.
A notebook in her hand.
Older than Eleanor expected.
But unmistakably familiar.
Caleb whispered:
“Anna.””
Richard stared at her.
And for the first time that night…
he looked completely defeated.
Anna Reed looked around the room.
Then at Eleanor.
“I’m sorry it took twenty years.””
Eleanor stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
Anna looked at Richard.
Then at the photograph on the table.
Finally, she answered:
“I’m the person who saw what happened the night Daniel Whitmore died.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then Anna added:
“And I’m the person who knows why Greg Whitmore lied.””
Her eyes turned toward Eleanor.
“But before you judge your son…”
She looked at Richard.
“Ask him what he threatened Greg with.””
Richard’s face went pale.
Because for the first time…
someone had entered the room who was not afraid of him.
May you like
And she was carrying the one thing he could never control.
The truth.
