Chapter 10: The Name That Destroyed Everything We Believed

The name on the paper felt impossible.

I read it once.

Then again.

Then a third time.

Because my mind kept trying to reject it.

*Daniel Brooks.*

My father's best friend.

The man who had helped Dad repair the roof after a storm.

The man who brought groceries when my mother was sick.

The man who stood beside my father at my mother's funeral.

The man who hugged me and told me, "Your mom would be proud of you.""

I looked at Dad.

His face had completely changed.

Not anger.

Not disbelief.

Something worse.

Betrayal.

"No," he whispered again.

Linda sat quietly across from us.

She didn't look surprised.

Because she already knew.

"What does he have to do with this?"" I asked.

Nobody answered.

"Dad.""

He looked at the paper in his hand.

"I need to sit down.""

He lowered himself into the chair like his body suddenly weighed twice as much.

Mia stood behind me.

"Who is Daniel?""

She had grown up in the same house.

She knew the name.

But not the history.

Dad rubbed his forehead.

"He was my closest friend.""

"Was?""

The word came from my mouth before I could stop it.

Dad looked at me.

And I saw something break.

"Yes.""

Linda opened the folder again.

"Your mother started noticing things months before she died.""

"What things?""

"Missing money.""

"Renee.""

Linda nodded.

"But not only Renee.""

My stomach tightened.

"What does that mean?""

She pulled out another document.

"This.""

Dad took it.

His eyes moved quickly.

Then slowly.

Like every word was becoming harder to read.

"What is this?""

Linda answered.

"A business account.""

Dad looked confused.

"Daniel's company.""

"No.""

"He was moving money through several accounts.""

My father stood suddenly.

"That doesn't make sense.""

Linda looked at him sadly.

"It didn't make sense to your wife either.""

The room became silent.

I looked at the documents.

Numbers.

Transfers.

Dates.

Six years ago.

Before my mother died.

"What were they planning?""

Linda hesitated.

Then said:

"Your mother believed they were planning to take control of everything.""

My heart stopped.

"Everything?""

"The house.""

Dad looked sick.

"Why?""

Linda looked at him.

"Because your life insurance policy.""

The air disappeared.

I stared.

My father didn't move.

"What?""

Linda continued carefully.

"Your mother found out Daniel had been asking questions about your finances.""

Dad's face went pale.

"My finances?""

"Your assets. Your accounts. Your insurance.""

Nobody spoke.

The meaning sat there.

Dark.

Terrifying.

"But why would Renee be involved?""

Linda looked down.

"Because she had access.""

I felt a chill.

Renee wasn't just taking money.

She wasn't just favoring Mia.

She had been building something.

A way into our family.

A way to control everything.

Mia covered her mouth.

"My mom...""

She couldn't finish.

And for the first time, I saw something I never thought I would see.

Mia looked ashamed.

Not because of something she did.

Because of something someone she loved did.

"I defended her.""

Her voice cracked.

"I spent years defending her.""

I turned toward her.

"Mia.""

"No.""

She shook her head.

"I told people you were dramatic.""

Tears fell.

"I told myself you were jealous.""

She looked at me.

"But you were just hurt.""

I didn't know what to say.

Because I had spent years thinking she didn't care.

Maybe she had cared.

Maybe she just couldn't see.

Until now.

Dad picked up the papers.

"Where is Daniel?""

Linda looked at him.

"I don't know.""

"What do you mean?""

"He disappeared after your wife died.""

The room froze.

"Disappeared?""

"He left town.""

Dad laughed once.

A broken sound.

"Of course he did.""

I watched him.

The man who always seemed unbreakable.

The man who fixed everything.

Now sitting there surrounded by proof that the people closest to him had betrayed him.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Linda looked at me.

"Your mother asked me not to.""

"Why?""

"Because she was afraid.""

The word hurt.

My mother.

Afraid.

I had always imagined her as strong.

She was strong.

But she was still human.

"Afraid of what?""

Linda looked at Dad.

Then at me.

"That if she accused them and she was wrong, she would destroy your family.""

I looked down.

Even then.

Even when she was fighting for her life.

She was trying to protect everyone.

Dad covered his face.

"I should have listened.""

Nobody corrected him.

Because it was true.

He should have.

After a long silence, Linda placed one final envelope on the table.

"This was the last thing your mother gave me.""

I stared.

"Another letter?""

Linda nodded.

"But this one wasn't for you.""

My heart started beating faster.

"Who was it for?""

She looked at my father.

"Your husband.""

Dad slowly opened it.

The handwriting was my mother's.

But the words were not gentle.

They were a warning.

He read silently.

Then his hands began shaking.

"What does it say?""

He didn't answer.

"Dad.""

He looked at me.

His eyes were filled with tears.

"She knew.""

"Knew what?""

He handed me the letter.

I read.

If you are reading this, then I was not able to protect you from what was coming.

My breath caught.

Please do not blame yourself. You trusted people because you loved them.

I continued.

But love should never require you to ignore the truth.

My hands shook.

Then the final paragraph.

If Renee and Daniel are still close to you after my death, please be careful. I fear they are not grieving with us. I fear they are waiting.

I lowered the paper.

Waiting.

The word stayed in my head.

Waiting.

For what?

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone looked at it.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A man's voice came through.

Older.

Calm.

Familiar.

"I was wondering when you would find the letters.""

My blood went cold.

"Who is this?""

A pause.

Then:

"You don't remember me.""

I gripped the phone.

"Daniel?""

Silence.

Then a quiet laugh.

"Your mother always said you were smart.""

Dad stood.

"Put it on speaker.""

I did.

Daniel's voice filled the room.

"I know you're angry.""

Dad stepped closer.

"Where are you?""

Another pause.

"You sound just like her.""

My father's face tightened.

"Where are you?""

But Daniel ignored him.

"I need you to understand something.""

My heart raced.

"What?""

"Your mother was wrong.""

I froze.

"What?""

"She thought I wanted to destroy your family.""

His voice became softer.

"But she never understood the whole story.""

Nobody spoke.

Then he said:

"Renee wasn't the only one keeping secrets.""

May you like

The call ended.

And for the first time, I wondered if the truth we had found was only half of it.
