Chapter 9: The Father I Never Knew

I almost refused to meet him.

Almost.

Every part of me said no.

Why should I sit across from a stranger who had spent years hiding in the shadows?

Why should I listen to someone who had already caused so much damage?

But something stopped me.

Curiosity.

Not about him.

About the truth.

I had spent my whole life surrounded by secrets.

I was tired of being the last person to know.

So three days later, I walked into the small coffee shop where Daniel was waiting.

Vanessa came with me.

Dad wanted to come.

I told him no.

This was something I needed to face.

Daniel stood when we entered.

The first thing I noticed was that he looked older than the photograph.

The confidence was gone.

The charm was gone.

He looked like a man who had spent years running from himself.

His eyes moved to Vanessa.

Then to me.

“Maya.””

I froze.

“How do you know my name?””

He smiled sadly.

“I know more about you than you think.””

I sat down.

“That’s not comforting.””

He nodded.

“Fair.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Why did you contact us?””

Daniel looked at her.

“I wanted to explain.””

“You had twenty years.””

“I know.””

“Why now?””

He looked down.

“Because I’m dying.””

The words landed heavily.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Vanessa whispered:

“What?””

Daniel looked at her.

“I have a serious illness.””

For a moment, I saw the little girl from the journal.

The one who wanted her father.

The one who believed he loved her.

Then Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“I don’t care.””

Daniel nodded.

“I understand.””

But I noticed something.

He wasn’t angry.

He accepted it.

That made it worse.

“Why did you ask for me?”” I asked.

Daniel looked at me.

“Because I owe you the truth.””

My heart tightened.

“What truth?””

He reached into his jacket.

He placed a folder on the table.

“I wasn’t only involved in Vanessa’s adoption.””

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

He pushed the folder toward me.

“Your birth records were changed.””

I stopped breathing.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Your birth records?””

Daniel nodded.

“Your family has been hiding something about your birth.””

I felt like the entire world tilted.

“No.””

Daniel looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

I opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Old documents.

Names.

Dates.

Signatures.

And one name I recognized.

My mother’s.

My hands shook.

“What am I looking at?””

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“The reason your mother always treated Vanessa differently.””

I looked up.

“What?””

He continued.

“Your mother didn’t just fear losing Vanessa.””

“She feared losing you.””

I didn’t understand.

“Why?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

“Because Maya…”

He paused.

“You were never supposed to survive.””

The room went silent.

I felt cold.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel leaned back.

“Twenty-six years ago, your mother was told she couldn’t have children.””

I stared at him.

“But I was born.””

“Yes.””

“She became pregnant unexpectedly.””

I nodded slowly.

“So?””

Daniel looked at the papers.

“There were complications.””

My heart raced.

“What complications?””

He looked at me.

“Your mother had to make a choice.””

I whispered:

“What choice?””

Daniel’s answer destroyed everything I believed about my family.

“She had to choose between saving herself…”

He looked at Vanessa.

“Or saving the baby.””

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t speak.

Because suddenly, all the secrets.

All the fear.

All the love.

All the resentment.

Everything was connected.

And I finally understood.

May you like

My family wasn’t hiding one truth.

They were hiding the reason we all became who we were.
