Chapter 14 - Ethan Speaks

The judge agreed to hear Ethan privately.
No courtroom.
No audience.
Just the judge, a child advocate, Dana, Leonard, Claire, Charles, and Margaret observing through a separate video feed.
Ethan sat in a soft chair.
His feet did not reach the floor.
He held the red model Ferrari in his lap.
The child advocate spoke gently.
“Ethan, do you know why you’re here?”
“Yes.”
“Can you tell us?”
“My grandma Margaret wants me to live with her.”
“And how do you feel about that?”
Ethan looked down.
“I used to feel confused.”
“Why?”
“Because she said if I loved my dad, I should want better things.”
“What are better things?”
He shrugged.
“Big house. Private school. People opening doors.”
The judge’s face remained unreadable.
Ethan continued.
“But my dad’s letter said places don’t decide your worth.”
Behind the glass, Claire cried silently.
Margaret stared without blinking.
The advocate asked, “Do you feel safe with your mother?”
“Yes.”
“Do you feel loved?”
“Yes.”
“Do you have enough food?”
“Yes.”
“Do you feel safe with Margaret?”
Ethan hesitated.
Everyone stopped breathing.
“No.”
Margaret flinched.
The advocate’s voice stayed soft.
“Why not?”
“Because she smiles when she says mean things.”
Charles closed his eyes.
“She makes me feel like loving Mom is betraying Dad.”
Claire’s hand flew to her mouth.
Ethan wiped his face with his sleeve.
“And she told me not to tell secrets. But Mom says secrets that make your stomach hurt are not safe secrets.”
The advocate nodded.
“That’s right.”
Ethan looked at the judge.
“I don’t want Grandma Margaret to go to jail.”
Margaret’s face softened for half a second.
Then Ethan finished.
“But I want her to stop owning people.”
No adult in the room moved.
Because the child had named the disease better than any lawyer.
Owning people.
That was all Margaret had ever called love.
After Ethan’s statement, the judge issued a longer protective order.
Margaret’s custody petition was dismissed pending investigation.
Her contact with Ethan was suspended.
The private investigator was arrested.
Leonard Price withdrew as her counsel by evening.
Margaret left the courthouse alone.
No reporters chased her this time.
That was worse.
Scandal wanted noise.
Disgrace wanted silence.
Charles found her near the courthouse steps.
For a moment, they were just two old people standing under a gray sky.
She spoke first.
“You turned my grandson against me.”
Charles shook his head.
“No. You made him afraid of you.”
“He is all I have left of Daniel.”
“No,” Charles said. “He is not a piece of Daniel. He is Ethan.”
Margaret looked away.
Her eyes shone.
But Charles did not trust tears from a woman who used pain like currency.
“I loved our son,” she whispered.
“I know.”
That surprised her.
Charles continued.
“But love without humility becomes hunger.”
Margaret swallowed.
“And what are you now? A saint?”
“No.”
Charles looked toward Claire and Ethan waiting by the car.
“I am late.”

Then he walked away from her.
For the first time in his life, Charles Whitmore chose the living over the past.
