Chapter 15: The Secret Buried With My Mother
The final piece was hidden in a place nobody had searched.
My mother’s old house.
Not the house my father lived in now.
The house where I grew up.
The place that was sold after she died.
When I was eleven, I thought losing that house was just another part of losing my mother.
But now I wondered.
What had my father really left behind?
Adrian helped me find the new owners.
A retired couple named Helen and Robert.
When I explained who I was, Helen immediately invited us inside.
“I remember your mother,” she said.
My throat tightened.
“You do?””
Helen smiled.
“She used to bring books to the neighborhood children.””
I smiled.
“That sounds like her.””
“She was kind.””
Then Helen looked at me carefully.
“She also left something.””
I froze.
“What?””
Robert walked toward a cabinet.
He returned with a small wooden box.
My heart stopped.
I recognized it.
My mother’s handwriting was on top.
*For Jenna.*
Again.
Another letter.
Another secret.
I looked at Adrian.
“I thought the other one was everything.””
“So did I.””
I opened the box.
Inside were documents.
Photographs.
And a recording device.
Old.
But intact.
My hands shook.
“What is this?””
Helen looked away.
“Your mother asked us to keep it safe.””
“Why?””
“She said if anything happened, you might need the truth someday.””
I pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then…
My mother’s voice.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakable.
“Jenna, sweetheart…”
I covered my mouth.
Hearing her voice after twenty years felt impossible.
“If you’re hearing this, then something happened that I hoped never would.””
Tears filled my eyes.
“I need you to know something about Patricia.””
I looked at Adrian.
The room became silent.
My mother continued.
“She didn't just betray me.””
A pause.
“She was planning to replace me.””
I stopped breathing.
“What?””
My mother’s voice continued.
“She wanted Michael’s life before I was even gone.””
My hands tightened.
“But there is something worse.””
The recording crackled.
Then:
“She was not working alone.””
I looked at Adrian.
My heart started racing.
My mother continued.
“Someone helped her.””
The recording stopped.
Everyone froze.
Someone else.
Another person.
Another secret.
Another betrayal.
For twenty years, we thought the story was about Patricia.
We were wrong.
There was someone else behind everything.
Someone my mother knew.
Someone who helped destroy our family.
I looked at the wooden box.
At the evidence.
At the life I thought I understood.
And I realized the truth was much bigger than I imagined.
My mother had spent her final days trying to protect me.
Now it was my turn.
The past had finally opened its door.
May you like
And behind it…
was someone I never expected.
