Chapter 10: The Truth He Tried to Hide From Everyone
Three months after the divorce papers were finalized, I thought Julian would disappear from my life.
Not completely.
People rarely vanish after fourteen years.
There would always be memories.
Places we visited.
Songs we heard.
Moments that belonged to a version of ourselves that no longer existed.
But I believed the chaos would end.
I was wrong.
Because Julian had one final secret.
And when it came out, I finally understood why he had fought so hard to control the story.
He wasn’t afraid of losing me.
He was afraid of losing the image of himself.
The image of the successful businessman.
The devoted husband.
The man everyone admired.
The man who always had an answer.
But the truth was much uglier.
And eventually, ugly truths have a way of finding daylight.
It started with a phone call from Rachel.
I was in my office reviewing plans for a fourth salon location when my phone rang.
The moment I saw her name, I knew something had happened.
“Rachel?””
“Elena, I need you to sit down.””
I smiled slightly.
“That’s never a good opening line.””
She didn’t laugh.
That told me everything.
“What happened?””
“There’s a new development with Julian.””
I closed my laptop.
“What kind?””
“A serious one.””
I waited.
Rachel was never dramatic.
If she sounded concerned, there was a reason.
“His former business partner contacted me.””
“Why?””
“He wants to provide information.””
I frowned.
“About Julian?””
“Yes.””
I leaned back.
“What kind of information?””
Rachel paused.
“The kind that explains a lot.””
An hour later, I was sitting across from Rachel again.
A folder rested between us.
I stared at it.
“I thought everything was over.””
“So did I.””
She opened the folder.
Inside were financial documents.
Contracts.
Emails.
Records.
I looked through them slowly.
At first, I didn’t understand.
Then I did.
Julian’s company hadn’t just been struggling.
It had been unstable for years.
He had hidden losses.
Manipulated reports.
Created the appearance of growth when the reality was completely different.
“He lied to everyone,” I whispered.
Rachel nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at the documents again.
For years, I thought Julian’s arrogance came from confidence.
Now I realized it came from fear.
Fear that people would discover he wasn’t the man he pretended to be.
Fear that people would see he wasn’t always winning.
Fear that someone like me, someone he considered beneath him, might actually be stronger.
“Why did he do it?”” I asked.
Rachel looked at me.
“Because some people would rather destroy everything than admit they need help.””
That sentence stayed with me.
Because it explained so much.
Julian didn’t cheat because Vanessa was better.
He cheated because Vanessa didn’t challenge his fantasy.
She admired him.
She believed the version of him he created.
I had known the truth.
And people who know the truth are dangerous to those who live by pretending.
A week later, I saw Julian again.
Not because I wanted to.
Because we had to attend a final financial meeting.
When I walked into the conference room, he looked exhausted.
The old Julian would have entered with confidence.
A perfect suit.
A perfect smile.
A rehearsed handshake.
This Julian looked different.
His shoulders were lower.
His eyes were tired.
He looked like a man who had spent too long fighting a battle he could never win.
He looked at me.
“You knew.””
I placed my folder on the table.
“Knew what?””
“About the company.””
I said nothing.
He laughed bitterly.
“You knew before everyone else.””
“Yes.””
“And you didn’t say anything.””
I looked at him.
“Would you have listened?””
Silence.
Because we both knew the answer.
No.
Julian would not have listened.
He never listened when I was right.
Not unless someone else confirmed it first.
“I could have fixed it,” he said.
I looked down.
There it was again.
The belief that everything was still within his control.
“Julian.””
He looked at me.
“You didn’t need someone to fix your problems.””
I spoke calmly.
“You needed someone to stop protecting you from them.””
His expression changed.
For a second, I saw regret.
Real regret.
But regret is complicated.
Sometimes people regret hurting you.
Sometimes they regret being caught.
And after everything I had learned, I no longer confused the two.
“I loved you,” he said quietly.
I looked at him.
“I know.””
That surprised him.
“You know?””
“Yes.””
My voice softened.
“I know you loved me in the way you knew how.””
His eyes lowered.
“But love without respect isn’t enough.””
The room became silent.
Because that was the truth neither of us wanted to admit.
There had been love.
There had been good years.
There had been real happiness.
But love cannot survive when one person keeps choosing themselves at the expense of the other.
After the meeting ended, Julian stopped me outside.
“Elena.””
I turned.
“What?””
He hesitated.
Then he asked:
“Do you ever miss us?””
That question was harder than I expected.
Because the honest answer was yes.
I missed who we were.
Not who we became.
“I miss the people we were before we hurt each other.””
His eyes filled slightly.
“But that’s not the same as wanting to go back.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“It isn’t.””
And for the first time, Julian didn’t argue.
He just nodded.
May you like
Because finally…
He understood.
