Chapter 9: The Man My Father Never Told Me About

The photograph stayed on my phone screen for hours.

I couldn’t stop looking at it.

My mother.

Smiling.

Standing beside a man.

A man who wasn’t my father.

At least, I didn’t think he was.

My mind filled with questions.

Who was he?

Why did Denise send me this?

Was she lying?

Was there another secret my father had hidden?

The worst part wasn’t the photo.

The worst part was my father’s reaction.

Because when he saw it, he didn’t look confused.

He looked afraid.

And that scared me more than anything.

“Dad?””

He didn’t answer.

“Dad, who is he?””

My father sat down slowly.

For several seconds, he just stared at the table.

Then he whispered:

“His name is Daniel.””

My heart sank.

“You know him?””

“Yes.””

The answer was quiet.

Too quiet.

I felt betrayed all over again.

“What does that mean?””

My father rubbed his face.

“Maya, it’s complicated.””

I hated that phrase.

Complicated was what adults said when children weren’t supposed to know the truth.

“Try me.””

He looked at me.

And for once, he didn’t avoid the conversation.

“Daniel was your mother’s friend.””

“Just a friend?””

My father hesitated.

That hesitation hurt.

“Dad.””

He took a breath.

“Yes.””

The answer came slowly.

“Just a friend.””

I looked at the picture again.

“Then why would Denise send this?””

My father didn’t know.

But Evelyn did.

She looked uncomfortable.

“I may know.””

We turned toward her.

“You do?””

She nodded.

“Daniel was part of a conversation your mother had with me.””

“What conversation?””

Evelyn looked at my father.

“Your mother was investigating something.””

My father frowned.

“Investigating?””

“Yes.””

My heart started racing.

“What?””

Evelyn lowered her voice.

“She was trying to understand why Denise was suddenly appearing in so many places connected to your family.””

The pieces connected again.

Denise.

The money.

The trust.

The timing.

My father looked sick.

“You’re saying my wife planned this?””

Evelyn didn’t answer.

Because she didn’t have proof.

But she didn’t need to.

The possibility was enough.

That night, my father and I went home early.

Neither of us talked much.

There were too many questions.

Too many painful possibilities.

When we arrived, Denise was waiting outside.

My entire body tensed.

My father stepped in front of me.

“What are you doing here?””

She looked different.

Not angry.

Desperate.

“I need to talk.””

“No.””

“Arthur, please.””

He shook his head.

“You lost that chance.””

Her eyes moved to me.

“Maya.””

I didn’t answer.

She looked hurt.

And for one second, I almost remembered the woman I thought she was.

Almost.

Then I remembered the shirt.

The money.

The years.

“What do you want?””

She swallowed.

“I want you to know I didn’t plan everything.””

My father laughed bitterly.

“Everything?””

She looked at him.

“You think you know the whole story.””

Those words.

The same words from her message.

I felt a chill.

“What story?””

Denise looked at me.

“Your father never told you about Daniel.””

My father’s face hardened.

“Leave.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“She deserves to know.””

I looked at my father.

“Dad?””

He was silent.

And silence was an answer.

Denise smiled sadly.

“There are things your father hid from you.””

My hands shook.

“Like what?””

She stepped closer.

“Your mother wasn’t as happy in that marriage as you think.””

My father immediately said:

“That’s a lie.””

But Denise continued.

“She was planning to leave.””

My heart stopped.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“She was going to take you and start over.””

I looked at my father.

“Is that true?””

He looked devastated.

“Maya…”

“Is it true?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

And that was the moment I realized something.

Even good people can hide things.

Even people who love you can keep secrets.

Finally, my father whispered:

“Your mother and I had problems.””

The words hurt.

“But she wasn’t leaving you.””

Denise interrupted.

“You don’t know that.””

My father looked at her.

“You’re done.””

But I wasn’t.

Because for the first time in my life, I wanted every answer.

No more protecting me.

No more deciding what I could handle.

I looked at my father.

“Tell me everything.””

He closed his eyes.

Then nodded.

“Okay.””

A long silence passed.

Then he said:

“Before your mother died, she discovered something about Denise.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

My father looked at me.

“She discovered Denise had been lying about her past.””

The wind moved through the yard.

Everything felt unreal.

“What kind of lie?””

My father looked toward the house.

Then back at me.

“A lie that involved Daniel.””

And suddenly, I understood.

The photograph wasn’t meant to reveal a secret about my mother.

It was meant to distract us from the truth about Denise.

Because the real mystery wasn’t who Daniel was.

May you like

The real mystery was why Denise was so desperate for us to know about him.

And what she had been hiding all these years.
