Chapter 14: The Father I Never Met

I left the house before anyone could stop me.

I didn’t trust myself to stay.

Not with my mother crying.

Not with my father watching.

Not with the impossible reality that everything I knew about myself had been built on missing pieces.

Daniel wanted to meet at an old coffee shop outside town.

Somewhere quiet.

Somewhere my family didn’t own.

That mattered.

When I arrived, I saw him sitting near the window.

Older than I imagined.

Gray hair.

Tired eyes.

A face that carried years of things unsaid.

He stood when I entered.

And for a moment, neither of us moved.

Then he whispered:

“You look like your mother.””

I didn’t know how to respond.

So I sat down.

“You’re alive.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why did you leave?””

His face changed.

“I didn’t.””

I stared.

“Everyone said you disappeared.””

“I was forced to.””

The anger came quickly.

“By who?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Your father.””

I looked away.

Somehow, even after everything, hearing it still hurt.

“Why?””

“Because I found out what he was planning.””

“The inheritance.””

He nodded.

“And more.””

I waited.

Daniel took a deep breath.

“Your grandfather discovered Richard was moving money illegally. He planned to remove him from the company.””

“And you helped?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you go to the police?””

Daniel looked down.

“Because Richard had already prepared.””

My hands tightened.

“Prepared how?””

“He created evidence against me.””

I froze.

“He made it look like I was the criminal.””

The pattern.

The lies.

The false records.

The destroyed reputations.

It was always the same.

“He was good at controlling the story.””

Daniel gave a sad smile.

“He learned from the best.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“Your grandfather.””

I looked confused.

Daniel continued.

“Your grandfather wasn’t perfect.””

That surprised me.

Everyone had made him into a hero.

A protector.

But maybe real people were never that simple.

“He made mistakes,” Daniel said.

“But when he realized what Richard had become, he tried to fix them.””

“How?””

Daniel reached into his bag.

He pulled out a small envelope.

“This.””

I opened it.

Inside was a DNA test.

My hands went still.

“What is this?””

“Proof.””

I looked at the result.

Daniel was my biological father.

The paper confirmed what my heart already knew.

But beneath it was another document.

A legal statement.

I read the first line.

Then stopped.

“What?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Your grandfather changed the inheritance after discovering the truth.””

I looked closer.

The document stated that if anything happened to me, control of the company would transfer to…

Not my father.

Not Weston.

Not anyone.

A foundation.

Created in my name.

I looked up.

“He knew.””

Daniel nodded.

“He knew Richard would try to take it.””

My phone buzzed.

A message from Victor.

*You have the final piece now.*

I frowned.

Final piece?

Another message appeared.

*But you need to see the original recording.*

I looked at Daniel.

“What recording?””

His face changed.

“The one your grandfather made before he died.””

I stood.

“Where is it?””

Daniel looked toward the door.

“Your father has it.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

Daniel nodded.

“And he has always had it.””

I felt cold.

“Then why didn’t he destroy it?””

Daniel’s answer was quiet.

“Because he was afraid of what was on it.””

The room went silent.

Then Daniel said:

“Simone, your father didn’t just fear losing the company.””

May you like

A pause.

“He feared everyone discovering why your grandfather chose you.””
