Chapter 7: The Truth Hidden Beneath the Family Name

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The warehouse felt frozen.

Daniel stood in front of me, staring at Richard Carter.

Richard stood near the entrance, his expression unreadable.

Madison was between them, looking like she was trapped in a nightmare she couldn’t wake up from.

And me?

I was trying to understand how my life had become a mystery involving murder, hidden identities, and a family I never knew existed.

I looked at Madison.

“You knew?””

She looked down.

“Not everything.””

The answer sounded painfully familiar.

Everyone knew pieces.

Nobody knew the whole truth.

“Then why are you here?””

Madison swallowed.

“Because I found something.””

Richard immediately stepped forward.

“Madison.””

She ignored him.

For once, she ignored her father.

“I found a box in his office.””

She pointed at Richard.

“A box he kept hidden.””

Richard’s face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

“What was inside?”” Daniel asked.

Madison looked at him.

“Documents.””

Her voice shook.

“Letters.””

She looked at me.

“And a recording.””

My heart started pounding.

“What recording?””

Madison reached into her jacket pocket.

She pulled out a small device.

“I listened to it this morning.””

Richard moved forward.

“Give me that.””

“No.””

The word surprised everyone.

Especially Richard.

Madison looked at him.

“You lied to me my entire life.””

Her voice cracked.

“You don’t get to tell me what to do anymore.””

For the first time, I saw Richard Carter lose control.

Not completely.

Not dramatically.

Just enough.

Enough to reveal that beneath the expensive suit and confident reputation was a man terrified of something.

“What did you hear?”” I asked.

Madison looked at me.

Then she pressed play.

At first, there was only static.

Then a woman’s voice.

A voice none of us expected.

A voice that made Richard immediately close his eyes.

Elizabeth Carter.

Madison’s mother.

“Richard, if you’re listening to this, it means something happened.””

Madison covered her mouth.

Tears filled her eyes.

Hearing her mother’s voice after all these years was something she never expected.

Elizabeth continued.

“I know you will try to convince everyone that I disappeared.””

A pause.

“But I need someone to know the truth.””

The warehouse became silent.

“My daughter was never yours.””

Madison looked at Richard.

Even though she already knew, hearing it still hurt.

Elizabeth’s voice continued.

“Her father is Michael Bennett.””

My father.

I felt Madison’s eyes move toward me.

“She deserves to know who she is.””

Another pause.

“But more importantly, she deserves to know what you did.””

Richard’s jaw tightened.

The recording continued.

“You changed the records.””

I looked at Richard.

“You made everyone believe Madison was your daughter.””

Nobody spoke.

“You threatened me when I tried to leave.””

Madison stepped backward.

“No…”

Her voice was barely audible.

Elizabeth continued.

“You told me nobody would believe me because everyone trusted you.””

Richard looked away.

“You said my reputation mattered more than the truth.””

The recording stopped.

For a moment, there was only silence.

Then Madison turned toward Richard.

“Is it true?””

Richard didn’t answer.

“Is it true?””

Her voice became louder.

“Did you steal my identity?””

Richard finally spoke.

“You don’t understand.””

Madison laughed.

A broken laugh.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I understand perfectly.””

Richard looked at her.

“I protected you.””

Madison stared.

“Protected me?””

Her voice became sharp.

“You lied to me.””

“I gave you a life.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You gave yourself a life.””

That sentence hit harder than anything else.

Because it was true.

Richard had spent years protecting his image.

His name.

His reputation.

But Madison had spent years believing she was someone she wasn’t.

I looked at Daniel.

“You knew about this recording?””

He nodded.

“Your father helped hide copies.””

“Why?””

“Because he knew Richard would destroy it if he found it.””

I looked at the documents.

“My father was collecting evidence.””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t he release it?””

Daniel’s face became serious.

“Because he discovered something worse.””

“What?””

Daniel looked at Richard.

Richard looked away.

And suddenly, I understood.

The truth wasn’t just about Madison.

It wasn’t just about Elizabeth.

It was about my father.

“What did he discover?””

Daniel took a breath.

“Your father found proof that Richard Carter wasn’t working alone.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“He had help.””

“Who?””

Daniel looked toward the warehouse entrance.

Nobody spoke.

Then Richard said quietly:

“Daniel.””

Everyone looked at him.

His expression had changed.

He looked exhausted.

“I think it’s time.””

Madison stared.

“Time for what?””

Richard looked at me.

“To tell you why your father really died.””

My heart started racing.

I had waited my whole life for this moment.

But now that it was here, I wasn’t sure I wanted the answer.

Richard continued.

“Your father discovered the truth about Madison.””

I nodded.

“We know.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You don’t.””

The warehouse became silent again.

“He didn’t just discover she was my daughter.””

He looked at me.

“He discovered someone else knew.””

I frowned.

“Who?””

Richard looked at Madison.

Then at me.

“Your father’s partner.””

Daniel went still.

I turned.

“What?””

Richard continued.

“Michael Bennett wasn’t investigating alone.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“Don’t.””

Richard ignored him.

“He trusted someone close to him.””

I looked between them.

“What is he talking about?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

That was all I needed.

“You.””

Daniel looked at me.

“I was trying to protect him.””

“Were you?””

My voice shook.

“Because right now everyone who says they protected my father seems to have hidden something.””

Daniel looked hurt.

“I made mistakes.””

“What mistakes?””

He looked down.

“I should have stopped him from meeting Elizabeth that night.””

My heart stopped.

“You were there?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

The world felt like it tilted.

“You were there when my father died?””

“Yes.””

I stepped backward.

“Then why didn’t you tell anyone?””

Daniel’s eyes filled with regret.

“Because I saw who was responsible.””

Nobody moved.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at Richard.

Then at me.

“It wasn’t Richard.””

My breath caught.

Richard looked surprised.

“Daniel.””

“No more lies.””

Daniel looked directly at me.

“Your father didn’t die because he was investigating Richard Carter.””

I felt cold.

“Then why?””

Daniel took a deep breath.

“Because he discovered the person closest to him had betrayed him.””

I looked at Richard.

Then Madison.

Then back at Daniel.

“Who?””

Daniel stared at me.

And when he answered, I wished he hadn’t.

“Your mother.””

The words hit harder than anything before.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“No, that’s impossible.””

Daniel looked devastated.

“I wish it was.””

My mother.

The woman who raised me.

The woman who sacrificed everything.

The woman who told me she was protecting me.

My mind rejected it immediately.

“She wouldn’t.””

Daniel looked at me.

“She didn’t kill him.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She didn’t kill your father.””

Relief came for half a second.

Then disappeared.

“Then what did she do?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“She helped him hide.””

“Hide what?””

Daniel reached into his bag.

He pulled out another envelope.

An envelope with my father’s handwriting.

But this time, there was something different.

A warning written across the front.

*For my son. Only when he is ready.*

My hands trembled.

I took it.

I opened it slowly.

Inside was a letter.

The first line made my entire body go numb.

*“If you are reading this, then your mother finally told you the truth.””*

I looked at Daniel.

Then at Madison.

Then at Richard.

Everyone was waiting.

I continued reading.

*“But there is one thing she never knew.””*

My heart pounded.

*“The person who betrayed me was not Richard Carter.””*

A cold feeling moved through me.

The next sentence was only seven words.

But it changed everything.

*“It was someone I called my brother.””*

I looked up.

Daniel was staring at the letter.

May you like

And for the first time…

he looked afraid.
