Chapter 8: The Truth My Father Was Afraid to Tell Me

For the first time in my life, I saw my father afraid.

Not nervous.

Not worried.

Afraid.

That was what frightened me the most.

Sebastian Pembroke was the man people called when impossible situations needed solutions.

He was the person who walked into rooms full of powerful executives and made them listen.

He was the person who built an empire after losing everything.

Fear was not something I associated with him.

But now he stood in front of me like a man facing the one battle he never wanted to fight.

A battle against the truth.

“Sit down.””

His voice was quiet.

I did.

Not because he told me to.

Because suddenly my legs felt heavy.

My father remained standing near the window.

The same place he always went when he needed to think.

Except this time, he wasn’t thinking about business.

He was thinking about my mother.

“Your mother’s death was not an accident.””

The words entered the room slowly.

But their impact was immediate.

I stared at him.

“What?””

He looked down.

“I should have told you years ago.””

My heart started beating faster.

“Dad.””

“I need you to understand something before I continue.””

His eyes met mine.

“Everything I did was because I loved you.””

I swallowed.

“That doesn’t mean it was right.””

The words surprised both of us.

But they were true.

My father nodded slowly.

“I know.””

That was the thing about him.

He didn’t defend himself when he knew he was wrong.

He carried the weight.

Sometimes too much.

“Your mother’s death was investigated.””

I waited.

“The official report said the accident happened because of weather conditions.””

I remembered.

A rainy night.

A phone call.

A hospital.

A world that suddenly became empty.

I was young.

Too young to understand death.

Too young to understand why my father never smiled the same way again.

“But?””

My father closed his eyes.

“But there were things that didn’t make sense.””

My hands tightened.

“What things?””

“Your mother’s car had been tampered with.””

The room went silent.

I stopped breathing for a second.

“Tampered?””

“Yes.””

“Who did it?””

My father looked away.

“That’s the question I never answered.””

I stood.

“You mean you don’t know?””

“No.””

“Or you don’t want to tell me?””

The pain on his face told me the question hurt.

But I needed it answered.

He took a breath.

“I know who was responsible.””

My entire body went cold.

“Who?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

And that silence was terrifying.

“Dad.””

His voice became almost a whisper.

“Victoria Caldwell.””

The name felt heavier this time.

Not because I was surprised.

Because everything connected.

The old betrayal.

The secrets.

The revenge.

The obsession.

I shook my head.

“No.””

My father looked at me.

“I wanted proof.””

“But you suspected her?””

“Yes.””

“And you did nothing?””

The moment I said it, I regretted the anger in my voice.

But my father didn’t react.

Because he deserved the question.

“I tried.””

He walked back toward the desk.

“I investigated privately.””

“Why privately?””

“Because I had you.””

The answer confused me.

“What does that mean?””

He looked at me.

“If Victoria knew I suspected her, she would know you were my weakness.””

I almost laughed.

“Dad.””

My voice broke.

“I was already her target.””

“I know.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

His eyes lowered.

“Because I had already lost your mother.””

The pain in his voice stopped me.

“I couldn’t risk losing you.””

I sat back down.

For years, I had thought my father was simply overprotective.

Now I realized.

He wasn’t protecting me from the world.

He was protecting himself from experiencing that loss again.

“What happened after Mom died?””

My father went quiet.

“Victoria disappeared.””

“Again.””

“Yes.””

“But she came back.””

“Yes.””

“As Preston’s mother.””

“Yes.””

I looked at the floor.

“She was always close.””

“Too close.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Did Preston know?””

My father shook his head.

“I don’t believe he knew everything.””

“But he knew something.””

“I think so.””

I remembered his face at the wedding.

His hesitation.

His excuses.

Maybe Preston wasn’t innocent.

But maybe he wasn’t the mastermind either.

That almost made it worse.

Because it meant he had chosen comfort over courage.

He knew enough to question.

And he chose silence.

My father opened another drawer.

This time, he removed a small envelope.

Old.

Worn.

My heart stopped.

“Another letter?””

He nodded.

“From your mother.””

I stared.

“You had another one?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you give it to me?””

His expression changed.

“Because this one wasn’t written for you.””

I frowned.

“Then who was it written for?””

He handed it to me.

I looked at the handwriting.

My mother’s.

The name on the front made my chest tighten.

Sebastian.

My father.

“You never opened it?””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because your mother wrote it to me.””

Again.

That promise.

Respecting her words even after death.

I looked at the envelope.

“What does it say?””

“I don’t know.””

I opened it carefully.

Inside was one page.

My mother’s handwriting filled it.

Sebastian,

If you are reading this, then something has happened that I hoped would never happen.

I looked at my father.

He stared at the letter.

I continued.

I know you will want to protect our daughter.

I know you will want to fight.

But please remember something.

Not every war is won by destroying your enemy.

Sometimes the greatest victory is refusing to become like them.

My throat tightened.

My mother knew him.

She knew his anger.

She knew his instinct to protect through power.

The letter continued.

Victoria believes she has lost everything because of us.

But the truth is more complicated.

There was something she never knew.

Something I never told her.

My eyes moved faster.

There is a reason she wanted access to our company.

There is a reason she wanted to destroy our family.

Because Victoria Caldwell discovered a secret.

A secret that did not belong to her.

I stopped.

My father looked at me.

I did.

The truth is, Sebastian, we were not the only people Victoria betrayed.

There were others.

Powerful people.

Dangerous people.

People who would never forgive what she did.

And if Victoria ever returns, it will not only be because of revenge.

It will be because she is afraid.

I lowered the letter.

“Afraid of what?””

My father looked at me.

“That’s what I never found out.””

I continued reading.

Protect our daughter from the truth until she is strong enough to carry it.

Because once she knows, she cannot unknow it.

I reached the final line.

And my hands began to shake.

The person who caused our pain is not the person everyone suspects.

Be careful who you trust.

Even those who appear to be victims can be dangerous.

I lowered the letter.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Because suddenly everything became more complicated.

Victoria was dangerous.

But maybe she wasn’t the beginning of the story.

Maybe she was only one piece.

“What does it mean?””

My father looked exhausted.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

“That’s impossible.””

He looked at me.

“I spent twenty years searching.””

The honesty hurt.

Because I realized something.

My father wasn’t hiding a solution.

He was hiding a mystery.

“I thought if I kept you away from this, you could have a normal life.””

I looked at him.

“Dad.””

He stopped.

“You need to understand.””

My voice softened.

“I was never normal.””

A sad smile appeared.

“No.””

I looked at the two letters.

At all the secrets my parents left behind.

At the damage caused by people who refused to let the past die.

“What do we know?””

My father sat across from me.

“We know Victoria wanted revenge.””

“Yes.””

“We know she manipulated Preston.””

“Yes.””

“We know she targeted you because of me.””

“Yes.””

“And we know someone else may have been involved.””

I nodded.

The pieces formed a picture.

But there were still missing parts.

My father reached for another folder.

This one was newer.

“After your meeting with Victoria, I had my team investigate.””

“What did they find?””

He opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Records.

My eyes stopped on one image.

A man.

I didn’t recognize him.

“Who is that?””

My father’s expression changed.

“That is the person Victoria met with three days before your wedding.””

I looked closer.

“Who is he?””

My father answered:

“Someone who disappeared twenty years ago.””

A chill moved through me.

“Why does that matter?””

“Because he was the person who helped Victoria destroy my company the first time.””

I stared.

“And now he’s back.””

“Yes.””

The room felt smaller.

The wedding.

The humiliation.

The press conference.

The secrets.

All of it suddenly felt like a much larger game.

Victoria wasn’t just trying to hurt me.

She was moving pieces.

But someone else was moving hers.

I looked at my father.

“What happens now?””

For a moment, he looked like the old Sebastian.

The man who built everything.

The man who survived.

“We find the truth.””

I nodded.

“And if Victoria is involved?””

His expression hardened.

“Then she answers for everything.””

“And if she isn’t?””

He looked at the files.

“Then we find the person who is.””

That night, I returned to my room with my mother’s letters.

I placed them beside my bed.

For the first time since the wedding, I wasn’t thinking about Preston.

I wasn’t thinking about the Caldwell family.

I was thinking about my mother.

About the warning she left.

About the truth she wanted me to discover.

And about one sentence that would not leave my mind.

Be careful who you trust.

Because the person everyone believed was the enemy…

May you like

Might only be protecting a secret.

And somewhere in New York, someone who had been hidden for twenty years had finally decided to come back.
