Chapter 7: The Voice From the Past and the Person Beside Me
The hospital hallway had never felt so small.
A place designed to save lives suddenly felt like a room full of people waiting for someone to reveal who had destroyed one.
The phone was still pressed against my ear.
Rachel Carter.
The name echoed in my mind.
A name from old documents.
A name connected to Connor’s family.
A name I had never expected to hear again.
Especially not from a woman who was supposed to be gone.
“I need you to tell me where you are,” Rachel said.
Her voice was low.
Careful.
Like someone who had learned that being overheard could be dangerous.
I looked around the hallway.
At Connor.
At Melinda.
At Evelyn.
At Kenneth.
Every person there had a reason to hide something.
“I’m at St. Vincent Medical Center.””
A pause.
Then:
“He’s with you?””
I froze.
“Who?””
Another pause.
“Connor.””
My eyes immediately moved toward him.
He noticed.
“What?””
I ignored him.
“How do you know he’s here?””
Rachel didn’t answer immediately.
That silence told me something.
She wasn’t guessing.
She knew.
“Rachel.””
My voice became firmer.
“How do you know?””
“Because Daniel told me.””
The name changed the atmosphere again.
Daniel.
The man whose death had opened every locked door.
“The night before he died, he called me.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What did he tell you?””
“He said he finally found someone who could expose everything.””
“Who?””
“You.””
I looked down.
For years, I had thought my story ended with my divorce.
I thought the worst thing that happened to me was losing a marriage.
But now I was beginning to understand.
The divorce had only been one chapter.
The real story had been happening behind it.
“What did Daniel know?””
Rachel took a breath.
“More than anyone realized.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“I know.””
Her voice softened.
“But I need you to understand something before I tell you.””
“What?””
“Daniel was afraid.””
I glanced at Connor.
The man who had always seemed impossible to intimidate.
“Afraid of what?””
“His own family.””
Nobody spoke.
But I noticed Evelyn’s expression.
She had heard enough to know exactly where this was going.
Rachel continued.
“He believed someone inside the Fleming family had been manipulating records for years.””
“Financial records?””
“Yes.””
“Medical records?””
A pause.
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
Because suddenly, all those separate pieces were becoming one story.
The hidden fertility results.
The altered divorce documents.
The inheritance.
Daniel.
Someone had been moving things around.
Changing things.
Controlling information.
And I had been the person left standing in the middle of the consequences.
“Rachel, who is responsible?””
Another silence.
Longer this time.
Then she whispered:
“I don’t know.””
I frowned.
“You called me to tell me you don’t know?””
“No.””
Her voice sharpened.
“I called because I know who can prove it.””
“Who?””
“The person standing next to Connor.””
My eyes moved slowly.
Everyone noticed.
Connor.
Melinda.
Evelyn.
Kenneth.
“Which person?””
Rachel lowered her voice.
“You already know.””
My heart started beating faster.
Because I did.
I just didn’t want to believe it.
“Melinda?””
The line went silent.
That was enough.
I looked at her.
My former best friend.
The woman holding Connor’s child.
The woman who knew my pain.
She looked back at me.
And for a second, I saw something.
Not guilt.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Kirsten?””
Rachel’s voice pulled me back.
“What?””
“You cannot let her know Daniel contacted you.””
I looked at Melinda again.
“Why?””
“Because if she knows Daniel’s evidence reached you, she will destroy it.””
My entire body went still.
“She would?””
“Yes.””
“How do you know?””
Rachel’s voice became barely audible.
“Because she tried to destroy it before.””
The call ended.
I stood there staring at my phone.
Nobody spoke.
Then Connor asked:
“Who was that?””
I looked at him.
For a moment, I saw the man I once loved.
The man who held my hand when I was sick.
The man who promised me honesty.
Then I remembered the documents.
The lies.
The years.
And I realized something.
I no longer knew him.
“Someone who knew Daniel.””
Connor’s expression changed.
“Daniel?””
“Yes.””
“What did they say?””
I watched him carefully.
A simple question.
But his reaction mattered.
He wasn’t asking because he cared.
He was asking because he needed information.
“What do you think they said?””
His jaw tightened.
“Kirsten.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t get to question me like I’m the one hiding things.””
The words hit him.
Good.
Because for years, I had answered every question he asked.
Now he could experience uncertainty.
Kenneth closed his laptop.
“I think we should move this conversation somewhere more private.””
I nodded.
Not because I wanted to protect anyone.
Because I needed space to think.
But before we moved, something happened.
Something small.
Something everyone else might have missed.
Melinda looked at Connor.
And mouthed:
“What did she tell you?””
Not me.
Him.
I saw it.
And so did Kenneth.
His expression changed.
Interesting.
Very interesting.
“Kenneth,” I said quietly.
“Yes?””
“I need to ask you something.””
“Of course.””
“Did Daniel ever mention Melinda?””
He hesitated.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
“Yes.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did he say?””
“He believed she had access to information she should not have had.””
Melinda immediately spoke.
“That’s not true.””
Everyone looked at her.
Her voice shook.
“I never knew anything about those documents.””
Kenneth looked at her.
“Then why did Daniel mention your name?””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Connor stepped in.
“Enough.””
I turned toward him.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“Kirsten.””
“No.””
I repeated the word.
“You don’t get to decide when enough is enough.””
The hallway was silent.
“I spent years living with questions you refused to answer.””
I looked at Melinda.
“I spent years trusting someone who knew more than she admitted.””
Then I looked at Connor.
“I spent years thinking I was the reason my marriage failed.””
My voice lowered.
“And now I find out everyone else had pieces of the truth.””
Nobody interrupted.
Because there was nothing to say.
Kenneth finally spoke.
“Dr. Sinclair, we need to leave before this becomes more complicated.””
I looked at him.
“More complicated?””
He gave me a serious look.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He glanced toward the hospital entrance.
“Because someone has been watching us.””
The words sent a chill through me.
“What?””
He didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked toward the glass doors.
Outside, rain fell heavily.
People moved through the entrance.
Doctors.
Visitors.
Patients.
But one person stood still.
A man near the parking area.
Watching.
The moment our eyes met, he turned away.
My heart tightened.
“Who is that?””
Kenneth’s face changed.
“I don’t know.””
Connor stepped closer.
“Do you know him?””
“No.””
But something about Kenneth’s answer felt incomplete.
Not false.
Incomplete.
I noticed.
Again.
Everyone had secrets.
Everyone.
The man outside disappeared into the rain.
And suddenly, I understood why Kenneth wanted us to leave.
This was no longer just a family scandal.
Someone was actively trying to control what came out.
We moved toward a private consultation room near the administrative wing.
For the first time in hours, the door closed.
No nurses.
No strangers.
No audience.
Just us.
Me.
Connor.
Melinda.
Evelyn.
Kenneth.
A room full of people connected by years of hidden choices.
Kenneth placed the laptop on the table.
“We need to establish facts.””
Connor leaned against the wall.
“This is insane.””
I looked at him.
“Is it?””
“Yes.””
“Because your brother died after investigating your family?””
His face tightened.
“That doesn’t mean anyone killed him.””
Nobody said anything.
But the sentence hung there.
Because he had introduced a possibility no one had mentioned.
Killed.
Evelyn looked horrified.
“Connor.””
“What?””
She stared at him.
“Why would you say that?””
He looked away.
And once again, I noticed.
People reveal themselves in moments they cannot control.
Kenneth slowly opened the laptop again.
“Before we make assumptions, we need evidence.””
He opened Daniel’s folder.
Several files appeared.
One caught my attention.
A document titled:
ORIGINAL MEDICAL DISCLOSURE AGREEMENT.
I stared.
“What is that?””
Connor immediately moved forward.
“Don’t open that.””
Everyone stopped.
Because his reaction was too fast.
Too strong.
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“It’s private.””
I almost laughed.
“Private?””
My voice became quiet.
“After everything, that’s still your argument?””
He looked angry.
But beneath the anger was fear.
Kenneth clicked the file.
A scanned document appeared.
A signature.
A date.
Seven years ago.
And then I saw my name.
My breath stopped.
“What is this?””
Kenneth read the first line.
“Consent agreement regarding disclosure of fertility-related medical information between spouses.””
I looked at Connor.
“What?””
He didn’t answer.
Kenneth continued.
“This document states that both parties were informed of relevant medical findings.””
My eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
Because at the bottom was Connor’s signature.
And underneath it…
A second signature.
Not mine.
Not Melinda’s.
Not Evelyn’s.
Someone else.
Someone who had signed on my behalf.
My hands went cold.
“Who signed this?””
Nobody answered.
I looked at Connor.
Then Kenneth.
Then the name.
And when I finally read it clearly…
I felt like the entire room disappeared.
Because the signature belonged to the person who had been helping me through the divorce.
The person I trusted to protect me.
