Chapter 6: The Family Meeting That Changed Everything

My father called the family meeting.

Not my mother.

Not my mother.

Not Melissa.

Him.

That alone told me how serious it was.

The message was short.

*Come to the house. We need to settle this.*

The house.

He still called it that.

Not the property.

Not the estate.

His house.

I almost refused.

Claire looked at me when I told her.

“Are you going?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Because I needed answers.

Not excuses.

Not anger.

Answers.

When we arrived, my parents were waiting in the living room.

The same room where Claire had been attacked.

The same chair sat in the corner.

Melissa was there too.

She looked different.

Less confident.

Because now she knew.

She knew the house wasn’t hers.

My father stood near the fireplace.

A position he always used when he wanted to look powerful.

“Sit down.””

I stayed standing.

“I’m fine.””

His jaw tightened.

“This isn’t a game.””

“No.””

I looked around the room.

“It stopped being a game when Melissa threw a shoe at my pregnant wife.””

Melissa looked away.

For once, she had nothing to say.

Dad ignored that.

“I want to explain.””

I almost laughed.

“You’ve had four years.””

His expression hardened.

“You don’t understand what was happening.””

“Then explain.””

He walked toward the table.

“The company was collapsing.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

He pointed at the folder.

“You know documents.””

He tapped his chest.

“You don’t know what it feels like to lose everything.””

I stared at him.

“Actually, I do.””

He stopped.

Because he knew I was right.

I had built my company from nothing.

I had struggled.

I had failed.

But I never lied to my family about it.

Dad looked away.

Then Mom spoke.

“Daniel, your father made mistakes.””

I turned toward her.

“Mistakes?””

She lowered her voice.

“You’re making him sound like a criminal.””

“No.””

I looked at her.

“I’m making him sound like someone who hid the truth.””

Melissa suddenly stood.

“Can we stop acting like Dad is the only problem?””

Everyone looked at her.

She swallowed.

“I didn’t know about the house.””

Nobody answered.

Because that was true.

For once, Melissa was not the villain.

She was just another person who had been lied to.

Dad looked at her.

“Melissa.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“You told me this would all be mine someday.””

The room froze.

My mother looked at my father.

“You promised her?””

Dad didn’t answer.

Melissa laughed bitterly.

“You said Daniel didn’t care about the house.””

I looked at my father.

There it was.

The real betrayal.

He hadn’t just hidden the truth.

He had created a story where I was the outsider.

The person who didn’t belong.

Dad finally spoke.

“I was trying to protect everyone.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I walked closer.

“You were protecting yourself.””

His face changed.

Because he knew.

He knew I was right.

Then he said something I never expected.

“You think this is over?””

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

He walked toward the desk.

Opened a drawer.

And removed another folder.

Different from the first.

Older.

More worn.

He placed it on the table.

“This is why your grandfather never trusted me.””

I stared at the folder.

“What’s inside?””

My father looked at me.

“The truth about your inheritance.””

I didn’t move.

Because suddenly, I understood.

The house was only the beginning.

My grandfather had left something else behind.

Something my father had spent years hiding.

May you like

And whatever was inside that folder...

My father was terrified I would find it.
