Chapter 12: The Truth Nobody Was Supposed to Hear
Frank told us everything.
Not all at once.
Not dramatically.
Almost like he was ashamed of every sentence.
Years ago, when Rachel threatened to expose Megan’s actions, the Peterson family panicked.
Not because they believed Megan was innocent.
Because they feared the consequences.
“My father always said reputation was everything,” Frank explained.
“He believed problems disappeared if people stopped talking about them.””
I stared at him.
“And you believed that?””
He looked down.
“Yes.””
The honesty was uncomfortable.
But necessary.
“What happened to Rachel?””
Frank swallowed.
“Megan created a story.””
A story.
That phrase made my stomach turn.
“She told people Rachel was unstable.””
Mark closed his eyes.
“No.””
Frank nodded.
“She convinced everyone Rachel was having problems.””
Rachel’s reputation was destroyed.
Her opportunities disappeared.
People stopped trusting her.
And eventually…
She left.
Not because she was guilty.
Because she was exhausted.
My hands curled into fists.
All those years.
All those lies.
And the family protected Megan.
Not because they loved her.
Because admitting the truth would mean admitting they were wrong.
“What does Megan have on you?”” I asked.
Frank looked surprised.
“How did you know?””
“Because people don’t keep secrets unless they benefit from them.””
He sighed.
“She has proof that I helped cover it up.””
Silence.
The room felt heavier.
Mark looked at his father.
“You protected her.””
Frank nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Frank looked broken.
“Because she was my daughter.””
I understood that sentence.
But I didn’t excuse it.
Because protecting your child does not mean allowing them to destroy others.
That night, we finally understood Megan’s plan.
The lawsuit.
The apology.
The public sympathy.
Everything.
She wasn’t trying to win.
She was trying to control the damage.
Because she knew something.
If the truth came out, she wouldn’t just lose money.
She would lose the one thing she cared about most.
Her image.
And that made her dangerous.
Very dangerous.
The next morning, Zoe called.
“Chloe.””
I could hear urgency in her voice.
“What happened?””
“We found the missing piece.””
My heart started racing.
“What piece?””
“The reason Megan chose Thanksgiving.””
I froze.
“What do you mean?””
Zoe lowered her voice.
“Thanksgiving wasn’t random.””
I looked at Mark.
“What was it?””
“She needed a public incident.””
“Why?””
“Because she knew something was coming.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What?””
Zoe paused.
Then said:
“The Peterson company is being investigated.””
I sat down.
“What?””
“Financial records. Fraud allegations. Misuse of funds.””
I looked at Mark.
His face went pale.
“Megan knew?””
“Yes.””
“And she needed a distraction.””
Exactly.
The slap.
The fight.
The lawsuit.
Everything.
A family scandal to bury a business scandal.
My daughter had not been the target because Megan was angry.
Lily had been the target because Megan needed chaos.
And suddenly, the truth became clearer than ever.
Megan Peterson had not lost control at Thanksgiving.
May you like
She had planned every second.
And she had chosen my daughter as the first move in a much bigger game.
