Chapter 9: The Secret Margaret Never Wanted to Tell

The message remained on Daniel’s phone for several minutes.

He read it again.

And again.

Each time, the words became heavier.

*Your father did not die by accident.*

*And your mother knows why.*

The room around him disappeared.

The voices.

The movement.

The questions.

Everything faded until there was only that message.

A stranger had reached into the deepest wound of his life and opened it again.

His father.

Michael Ellison.

The man Daniel had spent years mourning without truly knowing.

The man whose absence had shaped his childhood.

The man whose final letter had told him to be careful of secrets.

Now someone was saying his death was not what he believed.

Daniel slowly turned toward Margaret.

She was still staring at the blank television screen where Michael’s face had appeared moments earlier.

Her expression told him everything.

Fear.

Not confusion.

Not surprise.

Fear.

“Mom.””

Margaret looked at him.

She saw the phone in his hand.

Her face changed.

“What did you receive?””

Daniel walked closer.

“Who knew?””

Margaret looked away.

“Daniel…”

“Who knew?””

His voice was not angry.

That made it worse.

Anger could be dismissed.

Pain could not.

Robert and Claire exchanged uneasy looks.

They both understood.

There was another secret.

Another piece of the story Margaret had carried alone.

Daniel held up the phone.

“Someone says Dad didn’t die by accident.””

Margaret closed her eyes.

A single tear escaped.

And Daniel felt something inside him break.

Because he had spent his whole life waiting for someone to explain his father.

Now the answer was standing in front of him.

And she was afraid to speak.

“Tell me the truth.””

Margaret sat down slowly.

For years, she had imagined this moment.

She imagined telling Daniel everything.

She imagined explaining every decision.

Every sacrifice.

Every painful choice.

But she never imagined telling him while he looked at her with the same uncertainty he once had for strangers.

“I never lied about loving your father,” she whispered.

Daniel said nothing.

“But I lied about what happened after he died.””

The room became silent.

“Why?””

Margaret looked at her hands.

“Because Michael made me promise.””

“Promise what?””

“To keep you away from the people who wanted him gone.””

Daniel’s heart stopped.

“People?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Margaret shook her head.

“I didn’t know at first.””

“But now you do.””

She looked up.

“Yes.””

Daniel waited.

Finally, she said:

“Someone from inside the Ellison family.””

The words hit harder than he expected.

His grandfather’s family.

His blood.

Someone close enough to know everything.

“Who?””

Margaret looked toward the window.

“I don’t know if I can say that.””

Daniel stared.

“You still can’t?””

“I’m afraid.””

That answer hurt.

Not because it was weak.

Because it was honest.

His mother was not afraid of money.

She was not afraid of power.

She was afraid of a person.

And that meant whoever had been behind everything was still dangerous.

“Mom.””

Margaret looked at him.

“If I tell you everything, there is no going back.””

Daniel took a breath.

“There hasn’t been a way back since my wedding.””

That sentence broke something in her.

Because she knew he was right.

She had spent years trying to protect him from a storm.

But the storm had already arrived.

Twenty years earlier.

Margaret remembered the night clearly.

The phone call.

The panic in Michael’s voice.

The way he told her to leave.

Not tomorrow.

Not soon.

Immediately.

She had been confused.

Angry.

Terrified.

“What happened?””

Michael had been standing in his office, surrounded by documents.

His face was pale.

“I found something.””

“What?””

“Evidence.””

“Of what?””

Michael looked at her.

“Someone has been moving company assets.””

Margaret frowned.

“Who?””

Michael hesitated.

Then he said:

“My own family.””

At the time, she refused to believe him.

The Ellisons had always been complicated.

Powerful families often were.

But betrayal?

That seemed impossible.

“Michael, maybe you’re wrong.””

He shook his head.

“I wish I was.””

He showed her the documents.

Transfers.

Accounts.

Hidden agreements.

Someone had been slowly weakening Ellison Holdings from inside.

But that was not the worst part.

The worst part was the signature.

A family member had approved some of the transactions.

Someone trusted.

Someone respected.

Someone nobody would question.

“I need you to take Daniel and leave,” Michael said.

Margaret stared.

“What about you?””

“I’ll handle it.””

“No.””

Her voice became firm.

“We handle it together.””

Michael looked at her sadly.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

He walked closer.

“If they know I found this, they won’t stop.””

Margaret froze.

“They?””

Michael looked toward the window.

“I don’t know how far it goes.””

“And you want me to just disappear?””

“I want you and Daniel alive.””

The word stayed with her.

Alive.

Not safe.

Alive.

Because Michael already knew safety might not be possible.

Present day.

Daniel listened without speaking.

Every word felt like another piece of his childhood being rewritten.

“So Dad knew?””

Margaret nodded.

“He knew someone was after him.””

“Then why did you tell everyone he died in an accident?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because that was what they wanted people to believe.””

Daniel stood.

“Mom.””

She looked at him.

“Who was there that night?””

Margaret looked down.

“Your grandfather.””

Thomas Ellison.

Daniel felt a chill.

“My grandfather?””

“Yes.””

“Are you saying Grandpa was involved?””

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

Daniel noticed.

“What are you not telling me?””

Margaret swallowed.

“Your grandfather tried to protect Michael.””

“Then why hide it?””

“Because the person responsible was someone Thomas trusted.””

Daniel stared.

“Who?””

Margaret was silent.

Then Robert spoke.

“Margaret.””

Everyone looked at him.

He looked older suddenly.

More tired.

“I think he deserves to know.””

Margaret closed her eyes.

Robert continued.

“The person Michael suspected was…”

He stopped.

Then said:

“Thomas’s younger brother.””

Daniel frowned.

“Someone else in the family?””

“Yes.””

“Where is he now?””

Robert looked at him.

“Dead.””

Daniel felt a strange mixture of relief and confusion.

“If he’s dead, why are we still afraid?””

Nobody answered.

That silence was the answer.

Because the betrayal did not die with him.

The next morning, Daniel made a decision.

He was done waiting for people to explain his life.

He needed to investigate himself.

With Claire’s help, he accessed the original Ellison records.

Not the edited versions.

Not the family-approved history.

The real documents.

Hours passed.

Then he found something.

A name.

A company.

A connection.

A hidden partnership between Ellison executives and a private investment group.

A group that had quietly purchased pieces of failing companies for years.

Daniel looked at Claire.

“Who owns this?””

She checked.

Her expression changed.

“What?””

“The ownership records are incomplete.””

“Impossible.””

“Not impossible.””

She pointed at the screen.

“Hidden.””

Daniel leaned closer.

Then he saw the final name attached to the account.

*Whitmore Strategic Partners.*

His chest tightened.

Again.

The Whitmores.

But this time, something was different.

The records were dated years before his marriage.

Years before Lauren.

Which meant one thing.

This was bigger than her.

Much bigger.

Lauren received the call while sitting in her car.

She had spent the entire night awake.

Thinking.

Regretting.

Remembering.

She had wanted power.

She had wanted admiration.

But she never wanted to destroy Daniel.

That was the difference between her and her father.

At least, she hoped it was.

The phone number was unfamiliar.

She answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice replied.

“You should stop helping him.””

Lauren froze.

“Who is this?””

“You know exactly who.””

“No, I don’t.””

A quiet laugh.

“You’re just like your mother.””

Her grip tightened.

“What does that mean?””

“It means you believe you can walk away from your family.””

Lauren looked around.

“Are you threatening me?””

“I’m warning you.””

“About what?””

“Daniel.””

Her heart raced.

“What about him?””

“He is searching for answers.””

“So?””

The voice became colder.

“Some answers are dangerous.””

The call ended.

Lauren immediately called Daniel.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

Finally, she sent a message.

*I know who may have been behind the archive break-in.*

Seconds passed.

Then:

*Who?*

Lauren stared at the screen.

She knew what revealing the truth meant.

It would destroy her family.

It might destroy her marriage completely.

But for the first time, she understood something.

Protecting a lie did not save anyone.

It only delayed the damage.

She typed.

*My father.*

Daniel read the message.

His hands went still.

Lauren.

Her father.

The Whitmores.

Everything seemed connected.

But before he could respond, another message appeared.

This one from the unknown number.

*She is lying.*

Daniel stared.

A second message followed.

*Ask Margaret what happened the night Michael died.*

His eyes moved toward his mother.

The woman who raised him.

The woman who sacrificed everything.

The woman who had always protected him.

And for the first time in his life…

He wondered what she was protecting him from.

“Mom.””

Margaret looked up.

Daniel held up his phone.

“Tell me what happened the night Dad died.””

Her face changed.

She knew.

The moment had finally arrived.

No more hiding.

No more protecting.

She took a deep breath.

Then whispered:

“Your father was not killed because he knew a secret.””

Daniel waited.

“He was killed because he was about to reveal one.””

The room went silent.

“What secret?””

Margaret looked at him.

“The person who betrayed your father…”

Her voice trembled.

“Was someone I loved too.””

Daniel felt his heart sink.

“Who?””

Margaret closed her eyes.

And said the name she had avoided for decades.

“Your grandfather.””

Daniel stepped back.

The world seemed to stop.

Because the final person he trusted had just become the person he never expected.

Thomas Ellison.

The man whose blood gave him his name.

The man whose legacy he inherited.

The man who may have been responsible for destroying his family.

And somewhere in the city, someone watched Daniel uncover the truth.

May you like

Because the moment he learned what happened to his father…

Was the moment the last secret became impossible to hide.
