Chapter 7: The Man Who Came Looking for the Backpack
Nobody moved.
The voice outside the house remained calm.
Almost polite.
That was what made everyone uncomfortable.
Anger was predictable.
Threats were predictable.
But calmness from someone who had just arrived searching for something hidden behind a wall was something else entirely.
It meant confidence.
It meant the person outside believed they were in control.
Hank Collins looked at the basement stairs.
Then at the front door.
Then at Derek.
"Is he alone?""
Derek didn't answer.
Hank turned.
"Derek.""
The man swallowed.
"I don't know.""
That answer bothered Hank.
Because Derek wasn't acting like a man who didn't know.
He was acting like a man who knew exactly how dangerous the situation was.
The voice came again.
"Derek.""
A little louder this time.
"You know I don't like waiting.""
Eli tightened his grip on June's hand.
The old woman looked down at him.
"It's okay.""
But her voice wasn't convincing.
Children always knew when adults were pretending.
Hank stepped closer to Derek.
"Tell me about Calvin Reed.""
Derek stared toward the door.
"He's not someone you want to meet.""
"That doesn't tell me anything.""
Derek took a breath.
"He doesn't get angry.""
Hank waited.
"He doesn't threaten people.""
A pause.
"He makes people feel like they have a choice.""
Hank looked toward the door.
"And they don't.""
Derek nodded.
"He was always good at making problems disappear.""
June's face hardened.
"Problems?""
Derek looked at her.
"I didn't know how far it went.""
She shook her head.
"You keep saying that.""
"I didn't.""
"You worked with him.""
Derek looked away.
"I know.""
For the first time, he didn't defend himself.
That worried Hank more than an argument would have.
A person who was hiding something usually fought.
A person who had finally accepted the truth usually went quiet.
The knock came again.
Three times.
Slow.
Controlled.
Hank looked at Mason.
"Get everyone away from the windows.""
Mason nodded.
The bikers moved quietly.
No shouting.
No panic.
They had been on enough roads, in enough dangerous situations, to understand that fear made people careless.
June guided Eli toward the kitchen.
The boy kept looking at Derek.
"Dad?""
Derek turned.
For a second, he looked like he wanted to say something.
Something important.
Something a father should say.
But all that came out was:
"Stay with Grandma.""
Eli stared at him.
Because those were the words he had wanted to hear for months.
Not the words themselves.
The meaning behind them.
Stay safe.
I care about you.
I won't let anything happen.
But it came too late.
Derek noticed.
And the pain on his face showed that he noticed.
Hank moved beside him.
"You need to tell me everything.""
Derek looked toward the door.
"I know.""
"No more half-truths.""
Derek nodded.
"Calvin and I met five years ago.""
"Doing what?""
"Auto restoration.""
Hank raised an eyebrow.
"That's the clean version.""
Derek sighed.
"At first, yes.""
"What changed?""
"Money.""
The simplest answer.
Usually the most dangerous one.
Derek continued.
"Calvin had clients with expensive cars. People who paid cash. A lot of cash.""
"And?""
"And some of that money wasn't clean.""
Hank watched him.
"You knew.""
Derek looked down.
"I suspected.""
"That's not better.""
"I know.""
Another knock.
This time harder.
Everyone froze.
Calvin's voice came through the door.
"Derek.""
A pause.
"Don't make this difficult.""
Hank looked at him.
"He knows you're here.""
Derek nodded.
"Yes.""
"How?""
Derek didn't answer immediately.
Then:
"Because someone told him.""
Hank's eyes narrowed.
"Who?""
Derek looked at the floor.
"I did.""
The room went silent.
June turned.
"What?""
Derek closed his eyes.
"I called him.""
Hank stared.
"When?""
"After I found out Rachel had hidden the backpack.""
The anger on June's face returned.
"You called him?""
"I wanted answers.""
"No.""
June shook her head.
"You wanted the backpack.""
Derek didn't deny it.
That hurt her more.
"You knew it was dangerous.""
Derek whispered:
"I knew Rachel was scared.""
"And you still searched for it?""
He looked away.
June's voice broke.
"You are my son.""
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"I keep waiting for you to become someone I recognize.""
Derek had no response.
Because he felt the same thing.
He didn't recognize himself either.
Suddenly, the front door handle moved.
Everyone froze.
Calvin wasn't knocking anymore.
He was testing.
Hank immediately motioned.
Everyone moved.
The door didn't open.
Not yet.
But the message was clear.
He knew they were inside.
And he knew they were afraid.
Hank whispered:
"We need to leave.""
Derek shook his head.
"No.""
Everyone looked at him.
Hank frowned.
"What?""
Derek looked toward the door.
"If we run, he knows he has something.""
"And if we stay?""
Derek looked at the backpack.
"We find out why Rachel was willing to die for it.""
That was the first thing Derek said all night that sounded like the truth.
Hank studied him.
Then nodded slightly.
"Good.""
He looked at Mason.
"Get the truck ready.""
The bikers moved.
Quietly.
Carefully.
But before anyone reached the exit, Calvin spoke again.
"I know you're all in there.""
The voice was different now.
Still calm.
But less patient.
"My problem isn't with you.""
A pause.
"My problem is with the backpack.""
Derek stepped forward.
Hank grabbed his arm.
"No.""
Derek looked at him.
"He knows.""
"He wants you to react.""
Calvin continued.
"Derek, you know how this works.""
The words made Derek freeze.
"What does he mean?"" Hank asked.
Derek didn't answer.
Calvin laughed softly from outside.
"Tell them.""
Silence.
Then:
"Tell them what happened to Rachel.""
June's face went pale.
Eli looked up.
"What happened to Mom?""
Derek looked like he couldn't breathe.
Hank's eyes narrowed.
"Derek.""
But Derek was staring at the door.
Calvin's voice continued.
"You always were weak when it came to her.""
A long pause.
"She figured you out.""
Nobody moved.
Then Derek whispered:
"Stop.""
Calvin heard him.
"I knew that would get your attention.""
Hank looked at Derek.
"What is he talking about?""
Derek didn't answer.
Calvin spoke again.
"Open the door, Derek.""
"No.""
"Then I'll tell them.""
Derek closed his eyes.
"Don't.""
"Tell them how Rachel found the account.""
June looked confused.
"The account?""
Calvin continued.
"Tell them how she discovered where the money came from.""
Derek's face changed.
Because now there was no escaping.
Hank stepped closer.
"What account?""
Derek whispered:
"The one on the flash drive.""
Everyone became silent.
Calvin laughed outside.
"There we go.""
Derek looked toward the door.
"Leave my family alone.""
Calvin's voice became colder.
"You don't have a family anymore, Derek.""
A pause.
"You traded that away.""
The words hit hard.
Even Derek.
Hank watched him.
"Is he right?""
Derek didn't answer.
And that was answer enough.
June stepped back.
"Derek...""
He looked at her.
"I didn't hurt her.""
Nobody expected those words.
Not even Hank.
Because Derek didn't say:
"I didn't do anything.""
He said:
"I didn't hurt her.""
There was a difference.
A huge one.
Eli looked up.
"Dad...""
Derek looked at his son.
His eyes filled.
"I never wanted you involved.""
The boy whispered:
"But I was.""
Derek looked away.
Because he couldn't argue.
Outside, Calvin spoke again.
"Last chance.""
The house went silent.
Then the door opened.
Not because anyone unlocked it.
Because Calvin had a key.
Everyone froze.
Derek whispered:
"He has a key.""
Hank moved immediately.
"Back.""
The door slowly opened.
A man stood in the entrance.
Late fifties.
Gray hair.
Expensive jacket.
Clean shoes.
Nothing about him looked dangerous.
That was the first thing Hank noticed.
The second thing was his eyes.
Cold.
Calculating.
Calvin Reed looked around the room.
At the bikers.
At June.
At Eli.
Then finally at Derek.
He smiled.
"Derek.""
Nobody answered.
Calvin looked toward the basement.
Then toward the blue backpack.
And his smile disappeared.
"There it is.""
Hank stepped forward.
"You're not taking it.""
Calvin looked at him.
"Who are you?""
"Someone telling you to leave.""
Calvin smiled slightly.
"That's brave.""
"No.""
Hank shook his head.
"That's simple.""
Calvin looked around.
"You all think this is about money.""
Nobody spoke.
"It isn't.""
His eyes moved to Eli.
"It's about what that boy knows.""
June immediately stepped in front of Eli.
"What do you want?""
Calvin looked at her.
"The same thing Rachel wanted.""
June's expression changed.
"What?""
"The truth.""
The answer surprised everyone.
Especially Hank.
Because it didn't sound like a man chasing evidence.
It sounded like a man chasing something personal.
Calvin looked at Derek.
"You should have destroyed that backpack when you had the chance.""
Derek stared.
"What?""
Calvin's expression hardened.
"Yes.""
The room went silent.
Hank looked at Derek.
"You knew.""
Derek shook his head.
"No.""
But nobody heard him.
Because Calvin had already said too much.
June whispered:
"Derek...""
Calvin stepped inside.
"Your wife was smarter than both of us.""
He looked at the backpack.
"She knew someone would come looking.""
Then his eyes moved to Eli.
"And she knew exactly who would be blamed.""
The boy held onto June tighter.
Hank watched Calvin carefully.
Because suddenly, the story had changed.
Derek was hiding something.
But maybe he wasn't the only one.
And the biggest question was no longer:
What was inside the blue backpack?
May you like
It was:
What was Rachel trying to protect Eli from? :::
