Chapter 6: The Files Buried in the Past
For the first time in two days, Claire felt something stronger than anger.
Purpose.
It wasn’t forgiveness.
It wasn’t trust.
Those things were gone, at least for now.
But as she watched Ethan and Lucas sitting together in the backyard, laughing over a toy car, she realized something had changed.
The adults had created this mess.
The adults had hidden the truth.
The adults had allowed fear and pride to control their choices.
But the children had nothing to do with it.
They deserved better.
Both of them.
Claire stood by the kitchen window, watching the two boys race toy cars across the patio.
Ethan laughed loudly.
Lucas smiled more than he had since arriving.
For a moment, they looked like any two children meeting for the first time.
No secrets.
No complicated history.
No questions about hospitals, records, or mistakes.
Just two boys.
Daniel stood several feet away, watching them too.
Claire noticed the expression on his face.
It wasn’t the face of a businessman.
It wasn’t the confident man everyone admired.
It was the face of a father who suddenly realized how much time he had lost.
“You should have told me,” Claire said quietly.
Daniel didn’t look at her.
“I know.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You keep saying that.””
He turned.
“Because I do know.””
“Then why did you keep doing it?””
The question hit harder than anger.
Daniel looked down.
“Because every time I thought about telling you, I imagined losing everything.””
Claire folded her arms.
“And now?””
He looked toward Ethan.
“Now I realize I almost lost everything anyway.””
For a second, Claire saw regret in his eyes.
Real regret.
But she had learned something over the last few days.
Regret came after damage.
It didn’t erase it.
A knock came from the front door.
They both turned.
Rebecca stood there.
She had left Lucas with the boys while she made a phone call.
Now she held a small folder in her hand.
Claire immediately knew.
More answers.
More pain.
Rebecca entered quietly.
“I found something.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What?””
Rebecca placed the folder on the table.
“These are copies of the hospital documents.””
Claire stared at them.
“Why do you have them?””
Rebecca sat down.
“Because I never trusted the hospital’s explanation.””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“You never told me that.””
Rebecca gave him a tired look.
“You never asked.””
The words landed.
Claire noticed something.
For years, Daniel had been hiding things.
But Rebecca had been carrying her own secrets too.
Everyone had pieces.
Everyone had chosen silence.
And somehow, Claire was the last person to know.
“Show me,” Claire said.
Rebecca opened the folder.
The first pages were medical records.
Birth information.
Hospital notes.
Names.
Dates.
Everything looked official.
Until Claire saw the highlighted sections.
“What am I looking at?””
Rebecca pointed.
“This.””
Claire leaned closer.
“The time?””
“Yes.””
Rebecca tapped the document.
“When Ethan and Lucas were born, they were delivered within forty minutes of each other.””
Claire nodded slowly.
“I knew that.””
“But look here.””
She pointed again.
Claire read the note.
Then stopped.
“Nursery transfer?””
Rebecca nodded.
“That’s the problem.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“What does it say?””
Rebecca looked at him.
“It says Lucas was transferred to another room at 2:15 a.m.””
“And?””
“And Ethan’s record says he was transferred at the exact same time.””
Silence.
Claire frowned.
“That’s the mistake?””
“No.””
Rebecca shook her head.
“The mistake is that two babies were supposedly moved at the same time by the same nurse.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Maybe someone wrote the wrong time.””
“That’s what I thought.””
Rebecca turned the page.
“Until I found this.””
The next document looked older.
It was a handwritten report.
Claire read the title.
*Internal Incident Review.*
Her stomach tightened.
“Why was this never given to me?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Rebecca looked at him.
“Because the hospital said it was confidential.””
Claire slowly looked at Daniel.
“And you accepted that?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“I was told there was no danger.””
Claire turned back to the papers.
“What does the report say?””
Rebecca hesitated.
Then she answered.
“It says a nurse reported unusual behavior from another employee that night.””
“What employee?””
Rebecca pointed at the page.
A name was written there.
*Dr. Martin Vale.*
Claire looked up.
“Who is that?””
Daniel’s face changed.
“You know him.””
Her heart stopped.
“I do?””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“He was one of the doctors who treated you during your pregnancy.””
Claire felt a chill.
“What?””
“He was part of your medical team.””
She stared at him.
“And you never thought that was important?””
Daniel looked away.
“I didn’t know about this report.””
Rebecca interrupted.
“He knew something.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What are you talking about?””
Rebecca pulled out another page.
“This was sent to me six years ago.””
Claire read the letter.
It was from Dr. Vale.
Her eyes moved across the words.
Then stopped.
The message was short.
But terrifying.
*There are things about that night that were never properly investigated.*
Claire’s hands began shaking.
“Why would a doctor write this?””
Rebecca looked serious.
“Because he disappeared.””
“What?””
“He left the hospital shortly after.””
Daniel frowned.
“I remember that.””
Claire looked at him.
“You remember?””
He sighed.
“I remember people saying he moved away.””
“Why?””
“No one knew.””
Rebecca leaned forward.
“I think he knew something.””
The room became quiet.
Claire looked at the papers again.
The birth of her son.
A hospital mistake.
A missing doctor.
Changed records.
A secret Daniel had hidden.
The pieces were beginning to connect.
But the picture they created was darker than she expected.
“I want to talk to him,” Claire said.
Daniel looked surprised.
“Claire.””
“No.””
She closed the folder.
“I spent seven years being protected from the truth.””
Her eyes hardened.
“I’m done being protected.””
Daniel nodded.
“Okay.””
Rebecca looked relieved.
“I know where he might be.””
Both of them turned toward her.
“You do?””
Rebecca hesitated.
“I found him once.””
Daniel frowned.
“When?””
“Two years ago.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Rebecca looked at him.
“Because every time I tried to talk to you about the past, you disappeared.””
Daniel had no answer.
Claire noticed.
Again.
More secrets.
More silence.
“How do we find him?””
Rebecca looked at the folder.
“He owns a small medical practice outside the city.””
Claire stood.
“Then we go.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Today?””
“Yes.””
“But Ethan—”
Claire looked outside.
The two boys were still playing.
“We don’t involve them.””
Everyone agreed.
Because whatever truth they uncovered belonged to the adults.
Not the children.
Not yet.
Before leaving, Claire walked outside.
Ethan ran toward her.
“Mom! Lucas is really good at racing!””
She smiled.
“I can see that.””
Lucas stood nearby.
Claire looked at him.
There was something about his expression.
Something familiar.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
He looked like a child who had learned to stay quiet because adults had complicated answers.
“Are you having fun?”” she asked.
Lucas nodded.
“Yeah.””
Then he asked:
“Will I see Ethan again?””
Claire looked at him.
The question surprised her.
She glanced at Daniel and Rebecca.
Then back at the boy.
“Yes.””
Lucas smiled.
A small smile.
But a real one.
Later that afternoon, Claire sat in the passenger seat beside Daniel as they drove toward the address Rebecca had provided.
For the first time since everything fell apart, they weren’t driving away from the truth.
They were driving toward it.
Neither of them spoke much.
Finally, Daniel broke the silence.
“Claire.””
She looked out the window.
“What?””
“I know I don’t deserve this.””
She said nothing.
“But thank you for helping Lucas.””
Claire closed her eyes briefly.
“I’m not doing this for you.””
“I know.””
“I’m doing it because he’s a child.””
Daniel nodded.
“I know.””
“And because Ethan deserves the truth too.””
“I know.””
She turned toward him.
“You need to stop saying that.””
A sad smile appeared on his face.
“Sorry.””
For a moment, there was almost a hint of the old Daniel.
The man she knew.
But then she remembered the folder sitting between them.
The documents.
The secrets.
The years they couldn’t get back.
They arrived at a quiet street lined with small offices.
At the end of the road was a simple building.
A sign hung above the door.
*Vale Family Medical Center.*
Claire stared at it.
Her heart started beating faster.
Because after seven years of unanswered questions…
They were finally standing in front of the person who might know the truth.
Daniel reached for the door handle.
But before he opened it, Claire noticed something.
A name written on a small plaque near the entrance.
*Dr. Martin Vale — Founder.*
Underneath it was a second line.
A line that made Claire’s blood run cold.
*Former Director of Neonatal Care at Hartwell Memorial Hospital.*
The same hospital where Ethan was born.
The same hospital where the records changed.
The same night their family’s story was rewritten.

And now, after all these years…
They were finally meeting the man who might have written the first chapter of the lie.
