Chapter 4: The Truth Tasha Was Willing to Destroy Everything For
I drove home faster than I should have.
Not recklessly.
Not dangerously.
But with the kind of urgency that comes when your entire understanding of your life has been ripped apart and you realize there is still another piece missing.
Another secret.
Another betrayal waiting around the corner.
I kept hearing Daniel’s voice in my head.
*She knows we found out about the other thing.*
The other thing.
Those three words followed me the entire drive.
Because I was beginning to understand something terrifying.
People who hide one secret rarely stop at one.
A single lie needs protection.
Protection needs more lies.
And eventually, the person trapped inside the web isn’t just the person being deceived.
It’s everyone.
Including children.
When I pulled into the driveway, I saw Tasha’s car parked outside.
For a moment, I just sat there.
I stared at the house.
The house I had spent years making a home.
The flowers Maya planted beside the porch.
The small chalk drawings still on the sidewalk.
The mailbox Daniel and I picked out together when we first moved in.
Everything looked exactly the same.
And yet nothing belonged to me anymore.
I got out of the car.
Before I even reached the door, I heard voices inside.
Tasha.
And Daniel.
I opened the door.
They both stopped talking.
Tasha turned around.
Her eyes immediately moved to my face.
She knew.
She knew I wasn’t the same woman who had walked into the kitchen yesterday.
The woman who trusted her.
The woman who believed her excuses.
That version of me was gone.
“Maya?”” I asked.
Daniel looked toward the hallway.
“She’s in her room.””
I nodded.
Good.
At least she wasn’t here to hear this.
I looked at Tasha.
“Why are you here?””
She took a breath.
“I wanted to explain.””
I almost smiled.
Explain.
Another word people used when they wanted to soften damage.
“You had plenty of time to explain.””
Her face tightened.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
I stepped closer.
“You had weeks.””
Silence.
“You had weeks while my daughter was scared.””
Tasha looked away.
“I never wanted to hurt Maya.””
“But you did.””
Her eyes flashed.
“She misunderstood.””
I stared at her.
“Stop saying that.””
My voice was low.
“Stop acting like my daughter imagined what she saw.””
Tasha’s jaw tightened.
“I’m not saying that.””
“You are.””
I pointed toward the stairs.
“You are trying to make an eight-year-old child responsible for exposing your choices.””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
But he still didn’t defend me.
That hurt.
Even after everything.
Some part of me still wanted him to stand beside me.
Not because I trusted him.
Because I remembered when I did.
Tasha crossed her arms.
“You don’t understand the situation.””
I laughed quietly.
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I understand it perfectly.””
“You had an affair with my husband.””
Her expression changed.
“And you were planning a life after me.””
Daniel looked down.
Tasha looked at him.
That small glance told me everything.
They had a connection.
A secret language.
The kind of connection built by people who had spent too much time lying together.
I noticed.
And I hated that I noticed.
Because I had once been the person who knew every expression on Daniel’s face.
Now someone else did.
“I came here because there is something you need to know,” Tasha said.
I folded my arms.
“Then tell me.””
She hesitated.
That hesitation worried me.
Because whatever came next was bigger than an affair.
“I’m not the only one who made mistakes.””
I looked at Daniel.
“What does that mean?””
Tasha looked at him.
“Tell her.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“What?””
“Tell her.””
My stomach tightened.
“What are you talking about?””
Daniel rubbed his hands together.
“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””
I stared at him.
“Find out what?””
Nobody answered.
Then Tasha said:
“Daniel and I weren’t the only ones keeping secrets.””
My heart sank.
“Whose secret?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Then he said:
“Mine.””
I felt numb.
Another secret.
Another hidden piece of my marriage.
“What did you do?””
He looked at me.
“I made financial decisions.””
“What kind of decisions?””
He swallowed.
“Bad ones.””
I waited.
He didn’t continue.
So I did.
“How bad?””
Daniel looked toward the floor.
“I borrowed money.””
My eyebrows tightened.
“For what?””
Silence.
And then:
“To cover debts.””
The room became quiet.
Not the painful silence from before.
Something different.
Something colder.
Because now I was realizing I didn’t know anything.
Not just about the affair.
About my entire life.
“How much?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
“How much, Daniel?””
“Almost seventy thousand dollars.””
I stared at him.
The number didn’t feel real.
“Seventy thousand?””
“I was trying to fix it.””
“With what?””
He looked away.
That was answer enough.
I felt my anger rising.
“You weren’t fixing anything.””
“I was going to.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were hiding.””
Daniel didn’t argue.
Because he knew.
I looked at Tasha.
“And you knew?””
She nodded slightly.
“When?””
“A few months ago.””
I felt betrayed all over again.
“You knew my husband was hiding money from me?””
She looked uncomfortable.
“I was trying to help him.””
The words made me freeze.
Help him.
Not me.
Not our family.
Him.
“You were helping him.””
Tasha stepped forward.
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
I stopped her.
“I understand exactly.””
I pointed between them.
“You both made decisions about my life without me.””
Neither of them spoke.
That was the truth.
The part that hurt most.
They weren’t just having a relationship.
They were building a world where I was unnecessary.
A world where my opinion didn’t matter.
A world where my future could be decided in secret conversations.
I walked toward the table.
There were papers sitting there.
I picked them up.
Daniel immediately reacted.
“Don’t.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
His silence answered again.
I looked down.
Documents.
Numbers.
Signatures.
My eyes scanned the pages.
Then I saw something that made my hands shake.
My name.
My signature.
Except I didn’t remember signing anything.
“What is this?””
Daniel went pale.
“I can explain.””
“No.””
My voice became sharp.
“Not anymore.””
I held up the paper.
“Explain why my signature is here.””
Tasha looked away.
Daniel looked terrified.
“I needed approval.””
“For what?””
“For a loan.””
I stared at him.
“You forged my signature?””
“I was going to tell you.””
I felt sick.
That sentence.
Always that sentence.
“I was going to tell you.””
People always said it after they had already chosen not to.
“When?””
Daniel had no answer.
I looked at him.
“When were you going to tell me?””
Nothing.
Again.
The silence.
Always the silence.
I placed the paper down.
At that moment, I didn’t feel angry.
I felt something worse.
I felt empty.
Because anger means you still expect something from someone.
I didn’t know what I expected from Daniel anymore.
I didn’t know who I was standing in front of.
A husband?
A stranger?
Someone who had simply been pretending?
Then I heard footsteps.
Maya.
She stood at the bottom of the stairs.
My heart dropped.
“Maya.””
She looked at all of us.
“I woke up.””
I immediately walked toward her.
“Sweetheart, go back upstairs.””
But she shook her head.
“I heard yelling.””
I knelt down.
“We’re just talking.””
She looked at Daniel.
“Are you leaving?””
The question crushed him.
Because children always go straight to the fear adults try to avoid.
Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.
“No, sweetheart.””
But he didn’t sound certain.
And Maya noticed.
Children notice everything.
I hugged her.
“You don’t need to worry about grown-up problems.””
She whispered:
“Is Daddy mad at me?””
My entire body went still.
“What?””
She looked at the floor.
“Because I told the truth.””
I pulled her close.
“No.””
My voice broke.
“No, baby.””
I looked over her shoulder at Daniel.
And for the first time, I saw the damage he had caused.
Not just to me.
To her.
To a child who now thought honesty could make people leave.
“You did the right thing.””
Maya looked up.
“Promise?””
I kissed her forehead.
“I promise.””
That night, after Maya went back to sleep, I sat alone in the living room.
I looked around.
The pictures on the wall.
The family photos.
The memories.
I wondered how many of those moments had been real.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from Jordan.
I opened it.
There was a photo attached.
A screenshot.
At first, I didn’t understand what I was looking at.
Then I saw the name at the top.
*Tasha.*
And underneath was a conversation.
A conversation between her and someone else.
Not Daniel.
Someone I knew.
Someone I trusted.
The first message read:
*She still doesn’t know the truth about the house.*
My heart started pounding.
The second message:
*Once the papers are finalized, she won’t have a choice.*
Then the third message appeared.
And it changed everything.
*The only problem is Maya. She remembers too much.*
I stared at the screen.
Because suddenly, I understood.
The affair was not the entire betrayal.
The money was not the entire betrayal.
The house was not even the entire betrayal.
There was a plan.
A plan that involved taking away my home.
My security.
My future.
And someone was helping them.
Someone much closer than I ever imagined.
I looked at the name attached to the conversation.
And I felt the last bit of trust I had left disappear.
May you like
Because the person helping Tasha destroy my life…
Was someone I had invited into it.
