Chapter 10: The Truth Hidden Behind the Missing Ring
The first thing I noticed was the date.
Not the amount.
Not the names.
Not even the signature.
The date.
I stared at the document sitting on my father’s desk, unable to move.
Because three months after the wedding, after the accusations, after the public humiliation, after the Whitmore family’s reputation collapsed…
I finally discovered the truth.
The ring was never lost.
It was never stolen.
It was planted.
And the person who planned it had been much closer to me than I ever imagined.
“Vivienne?””
My father’s voice pulled me back.
I looked up.
He was watching me carefully.
“What did you find?””
I slowly turned the paper toward him.
“This transaction.””
His eyes moved across the page.
Then his expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I knew him.
My father was not easily surprised.
This surprised him.
“What is it?””
I pointed at the date.
“The day before the wedding.””
Silence filled the office.
The document showed a payment made from an account connected to Whitmore Holdings.
The recipient?
A private security consultant.
The description?
Event preparation services.
At first glance, it seemed normal.
Rich families hired security for large events all the time.
But there was something wrong.
The consultant was not hired by the wedding venue.
Not by Eleanor.
Not by Chloe.
Not even by Richard.
The contract was approved through Daniel’s private account.
My stomach tightened.
“No.””
My father didn’t speak.
Because he knew.
He knew I was putting the pieces together.
Daniel.
The man who claimed he wanted to protect me.
The man who cried when he realized he lost me.
The man who said he had made mistakes.
There was a possibility he knew more than he admitted.
Margaret entered the room quietly.
“We traced the consultant.””
I looked at her.
“And?””
“He has disappeared.””
Of course.
People disappeared when they knew they were holding dangerous information.
“Find him.””
My father nodded.
“We already started.””
I looked back at the documents.
A strange feeling settled over me.
Not anger.
Not sadness.
Something colder.
Because there was a difference between being betrayed by someone’s weakness…
And being betrayed by their intention.
I could forgive cowardice.
Maybe.
But planning?
That was something else.
That night, I called Daniel.
He answered immediately.
“Vivienne?””
His voice sounded hopeful.
That hurt more than I expected.
“Did you know?””
The silence came too quickly.
And that was my answer.
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Daniel.””
“I…”
“Did you know about the ring?””
“No.””
The answer came fast.
Too fast.
Then slower:
“I mean… not everything.””
My heart sank.
“Not everything?””
He exhaled.
“Can we meet?””
“No.””
“Please.””
I closed my eyes.
“Answer me.””
Another silence.
Then he whispered:
“My mother talked about teaching you a lesson.””
The room became painfully quiet.
“What lesson?””
“I don’t know.””
“Daniel.””
My voice shook.
“What lesson?””
He finally said:
“She wanted to scare you.””
I felt numb.
“Scare me?””
“Yes.””
“By accusing me of theft?””
“She said she wanted you to understand your place.””
Those words.
Those exact words.
They explained everything.
The years of insults.
The comments.
The judgment.
The way they always treated me like an outsider.
They did not want me to belong.
They wanted me to submit.
“Did you know they would search me?””
“No.””
“Did you know your mother would rip my dress?””
“No.””
“Did you know Chloe would accuse me in front of everyone?””
“No.””
I laughed softly.
A painful sound.
“But you knew enough.””
Daniel said nothing.
Because he knew.
“I thought it would just be a conversation.””
“A conversation?””
“Yes.””
“You let your family corner your pregnant wife because you thought it would be a conversation?””
“I was wrong.””
“Yes.””
My voice became quiet.
“You were.””
He started crying.
“I hate myself for it.””
I believed him.
That was the worst part.
I believed he regretted it.
But regret did not erase damage.
“I need the truth.””
“You have it.””
“No.””
I looked at the documents.
“I need all of it.””
Daniel hesitated.
Then he said:
“There is something else.””
Of course there was.
There was always something else.
“My mother had been planning this for weeks.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She thought if you were embarrassed enough, you would leave.””
I felt my breath disappear.
“She wanted me to divorce you?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel’s answer was quiet.
“Because she found out your father’s company was interested in expanding into the same market as ours.””
I understood.
The final piece.
They did not just want control.
They wanted distance.
If I left Daniel, my family would no longer be connected to theirs.
But why?
Why would they destroy their own opportunity?
Then Daniel said something that made everything clear.
“Because they had another investor.””
I sat up.
“Who?””
He hesitated.
“Someone who wanted your family to fail.””
My father walked into the room at that exact moment.
He saw my expression.
“What happened?””
I put the phone on speaker.
Daniel’s voice continued.
“I don’t know who it is.””
My father’s face became serious.
“But I know one thing.””
“What?””
“They wanted the Whitmores to break away from the Carters.””
I looked at my father.
For the first time, this was bigger than my marriage.
Bigger than revenge.
May you like
Someone had manipulated an entire family.
And I was the target.
