Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Faded Jacket

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The wedding planner, Claire, remained kneeling in front of my father.

The same man Diane had just called trash.

The same man everyone had watched being humiliated.

But now Claire looked at him like he was the most important person in the room.

My father looked confused.

“Claire… what are you doing?””

She looked up at him.

“Mr. Bennett, I’m sorry. I tried calling your assistant, but I couldn’t reach you.””

Assistant?

The word hung in the air.

Several guests exchanged confused looks.

Diane frowned.

“What is happening?””

Claire stood slowly.

Her hands were shaking.

“The executive board is on line one waiting for your authorization to release the funds.””

Silence.

Absolute silence.

My father stared at her.

“I told them I would handle it tomorrow.””

“Tomorrow is too late,” Claire replied urgently.

“The acquisition deadline is tonight.””

A murmur moved through the crowd.

Acquisition?

Executive board?

My father?

None of it made sense.

Vanessa’s grip on my arm loosened.

“Daniel…”

I didn’t answer.

I couldn’t.

Because for the first time in my life, I was looking at my father and realizing there were parts of his story I didn’t know.

Diane laughed nervously.

“That’s ridiculous.””

Everyone looked at her.

She forced a smile.

“Arthur Bennett is a repairman.””

My father said nothing.

Diane pointed at him.

“He fixes old machines. He doesn’t have executive boards.””

Claire turned toward Diane.

And her expression changed.

It wasn’t anger.

It was disbelief.

“You don’t know who he is?””

Diane crossed her arms.

“Obviously, I know who he is.””

Claire looked around the ballroom.

Then back at my father.

“No. I don’t think you do.””

The room became even quieter.

My father sighed.

“Claire, please.””

But she shook her head.

“No, Mr. Bennett. After what just happened, people deserve to know.””

My father looked uncomfortable.

That was when I realized something.

He wasn’t afraid of being exposed.

He was afraid of causing a scene.

Even now.

Even after being insulted.

He was worried about everyone else.

That was my father.

Always.

Claire took a breath.

“Arthur Bennett is the founder and majority owner of Bennett Holdings.””

The room froze.

I heard someone whisper:

“Bennett Holdings?””

Another person replied:

“The investment company?””

My heart started beating faster.

I knew the name.

Everyone did.

Bennett Holdings was one of the largest private investment groups in the country.

But that couldn’t be my father.

Could it?

I looked at him.

He looked down.

Almost embarrassed.

Diane’s face slowly lost color.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“No, that’s impossible.””

Claire continued.

“He built the company thirty-five years ago. He stepped away from public appearances years ago and placed management responsibilities with his board.””

She looked at my father.

“But every major decision still requires his approval.””

The guests stared.

The man in the faded jacket.

The man standing quietly near the door.

The man they thought didn’t belong.

Was actually the person everyone else wanted in the room.

Vanessa looked at me.

“You knew?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

And that was the truth.

My father had hidden this from me.

From everyone.

After my mother passed away, he always told me money changed people.

He didn’t want me growing up surrounded by wealth.

He wanted me to understand effort.

Responsibility.

Kindness.

He wanted me to become someone who valued people, not possessions.

And somehow, I never questioned it.

Because he never acted rich.

Not once.

Diane slowly approached my father.

Her entire attitude had changed.

The arrogance was gone.

“Arthur…”

My father looked at her.

“Yes?””

She smiled awkwardly.

“I think there has been a misunderstanding.””

My father looked around the room.

“At what point?””

Diane stopped.

His voice remained calm.

That somehow made it worse.

“At what point was calling me trash a misunderstanding?””

Nobody spoke.

Diane opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Daniel, can we talk privately?””

I looked at her.

“Now?””

“Yes.””

I laughed quietly.

Not because anything was funny.

Because I couldn’t believe she thought a private conversation could erase what happened.

“You watched my father get insulted in front of everyone.””

“Daniel, I didn’t know.””

“You didn’t need to know who he was.””

My voice became stronger.

“You should have cared because he’s my father.””

Vanessa looked away.

That hurt more than anything.

Because I finally understood.

If my father had remained unknown…

If Claire had never walked through those doors…

Would Vanessa have defended him?

Would Diane have apologized?

Would anyone here have treated him differently?

The answer was obvious.

And that truth hurt.

My father touched my shoulder.

“Daniel.””

I looked at him.

“Don’t let anger make you someone you’re not.””

Even after everything, he was teaching me.

I swallowed hard.

“Dad, how could you never tell me?””

He smiled sadly.

“Because I wanted one person in my life to love me without knowing my bank account.””

Those words destroyed me.

Because suddenly I understood.

My father wasn’t hiding wealth.

He was protecting love.

Before I could respond, Claire’s phone rang again.

She answered quickly.

“Yes?””

Her expression changed.

Then she looked at my father.

“Mr. Bennett, there’s another issue.””

Everyone watched.

“What issue?”” my father asked.

Claire lowered her voice.

“The Whitmore family company.””

Diane immediately looked nervous.

“What about it?””

Claire hesitated.

“The acquisition offer you rejected three months ago…”

My father frowned.

“Yes?””

“The company requesting the acquisition was yours.””

Diane went completely still.

I looked between them.

“What?””

Claire continued.

“Bennett Holdings has been negotiating to acquire Whitmore International.””

The room exploded into whispers.

My father looked disappointed.

Not angry.

Just disappointed.

“I never knew Diane was connected to the company.””

Diane’s face turned pale.

Because suddenly everyone understood.

She had spent months insulting the very man who held the future of her family’s business in his hands.

And my wedding had become the place where everything was exposed.

My father looked at me.

“Daniel.””

“Yes?””

He handed me the velvet box.

The same one he had been holding all night.

“I was going to give this to you after the ceremony.””

I opened it.

Inside was the old family watch.

But underneath it was something else.

A folded document.

I looked at him.

“What is this?””

My father smiled faintly.

“Something your grandfather left for you.””

Before I could open it, Diane suddenly stepped forward.

“Arthur, wait.””

Everyone turned.

For the first time all night, she looked afraid.

And I realized…

The humiliation she caused my father was only the beginning.

May you like

Because whatever was inside that document…

Was something she desperately didn’t want me to see.
