Chapter 9: The Final Piece of the Puzzle
Darkness had always frightened Lily.
When she was three years old, Sarah used to leave a small night light beside her bed because our daughter believed shadows were hiding in the corners.
Sarah would laugh and tell her there were no monsters.
“Only imagination,” she would say.
I used to believe that too.
Until I learned that sometimes the scariest things weren't hiding in the dark.
They were standing in the light.
The power returned after several minutes.
But the feeling in the room didn't.
Something had changed.
The message on my phone remained there.
A warning.
A threat.
A reminder that whoever was behind this was no longer trying to stay hidden.
They wanted me afraid.
They wanted me to stop.
But fear had never been the thing that controlled me.
Loss did.
And I had already lost the person who mattered most.
Nobody was taking Lily from me.
Nobody.
“Where did Victoria go?””
Daniel's voice pulled me back.
I looked around the room.
The front door was still locked.
The windows were closed.
She hadn't left through either.
“She was here.””
Daniel looked concerned.
“When?””
“Seconds ago.””
We searched the house immediately.
Not because I thought Victoria had done something.
Because I knew something was wrong.
We found her in the hallway near the back entrance.
She was standing completely still.
Her face was pale.
“Victoria?””
She looked at me.
“I heard someone.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Someone inside the house?””
She nodded.
“Before the lights went out.””
My instincts immediately changed.
This wasn't just a threat.
Someone had been here.
James and the security team searched every room.
Every window.
Every entrance.
They found nothing.
No intruder.
No evidence.
Nothing.
And somehow, that made it worse.
Because whoever did this was good.
Very good.
The next morning, I made the decision I had been avoiding.
I returned to the Vance Grand Hotel.
Not because I wanted to.
Because running was exactly what they wanted.
The moment I arrived, I felt the difference.
Employees stood straighter.
People lowered their voices.
Everyone knew something had happened.
Rumors traveled faster than official statements.
Especially inside companies.
I walked through the lobby where everything started.
The same marble floor.
The same front desk.
The same place where Patricia looked at me and decided I didn't belong.
But now I saw something else.
Fear.
Not from me.
From them.
They knew something bigger was happening.
Olivia met me near the elevators.
“Security has increased.””
“Good.””
“Richard hasn't left the city.””
“I expected that.””
She handed me a folder.
“We found the source of the leaked information.””
I stopped.
“Who?””
She looked uncomfortable.
“It wasn't one person.””
I opened the folder.
Inside were multiple names.
Employees.
Managers.
Executives.
Not all of them were involved directly.
Some had simply shared information because they were pressured.
Others because they wanted favors.
Others because they thought Richard would become powerful.
But one name appeared repeatedly.
The person connecting everyone.
Marcus Hale.
I stared at the name.
“Marcus.””
Olivia nodded.
“He coordinated communication between several people.””
The same Marcus who had worked with my family for fifteen years.
The same Marcus who knew every major decision.
The same Marcus who was supposed to protect the company.
“Bring him to me.””
Marcus arrived thirty minutes later.
Unlike Richard, he didn't pretend.
The moment he entered my office, he looked defeated.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Defeated.
“Ethan.””
“Marcus.””
He sat down.
Neither of us spoke for a moment.
Because we both knew.
The truth had arrived before the conversation began.
“How long?””
His eyes dropped.
“Two years.””
Two years.
I felt something inside me break.
Not because of the company.
Because I remembered.
Two years ago was when Lily started asking why I wasn't smiling anymore.
Two years ago was when Sarah's absence became impossible to ignore.
Two years ago was when I trusted the people around me more than ever.
And Marcus was there.
“Why?””
He swallowed.
“I was angry.””
“At me?””
“No.””
“Then why?””
He looked at the floor.
“My father worked for your grandfather.””
I waited.
“He was forced out.””
I frowned.
“By who?””
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“Your family.””
There it was again.
The past.
Always the past.
A wound I inherited without knowing.
“My father spent his life believing the Vances ruined him.””
“And you believed him.””
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I hated that I did.””
He looked up.
“But then Richard found me.””
Of course.
Richard.
Always Richard.
“He knew about my family history.””
“And he used it.””
Marcus nodded.
“He told me the truth had been hidden for decades.””
“Did he?””
“Yes.””
I leaned forward.
“Marcus, people can tell pieces of truth and still create lies.””
He looked away.
“I know that now.””
“Did you install the camera?””
“No.””
“Did you threaten my daughter?””
His expression changed instantly.
“No.””
For the first time, I believed him.
Not because I trusted him.
Because the reaction was real.
“You need to tell me everything.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“I don't know who installed the camera.””
“But?””
“But I know who wanted you distracted.””
“Who?””
He hesitated.
Then:
“Andrew.””
I froze.
“Andrew?””
“Yes.””
That didn't make sense.
Andrew had admitted working with Victoria.
He had information.
But a hidden camera?
Threats?
Why?
“Why would Andrew do this?””
Marcus shook his head.
“I don't know.””
Then his phone buzzed.
He looked at it.
His face changed.
“What?””
He handed it to me.
A message.
From Andrew.
*He knows too much. Make sure he doesn't leave the hotel.*
My stomach dropped.
I looked at Marcus.
Then toward the door.
“Where is Andrew?””
Marcus looked terrified.
“I don't know.””
I immediately called Olivia.
“Find Andrew.””
“Right now?””
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
“Just do it.””
We found Andrew in the underground parking garage.
Alone.
Sitting inside his car.
His hands were shaking.
When he saw me approach, he didn't run.
He looked exhausted.
Broken.
“Ethan.””
“What are you doing?””
He looked at Marcus.
Then back at me.
“I was trying to stop him.””
“Who?””
“Richard.””
I stared.
“Then why did you send that message?””
His face changed.
“What message?””
I showed him the phone.
The message sent from his number.
His expression went blank.
“That isn't me.””
“What?””
“Someone cloned my phone.””
Silence.
Everyone looked at each other.
Someone was still ahead of us.
Someone was manipulating every piece.
Andrew stepped out of the car.
“I know who did it.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Who?””
He looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw genuine fear.
“Your father.””
The words made no sense.
“My father is dead.””
“I know.””
“Then explain.””
Andrew took a deep breath.
“Your father kept secrets.””
“What secrets?””
“About the company.””
“About Richard?””
“Yes.””
“About Sarah?””
His silence answered.
I felt my heart sink.
“What do you know?””
Andrew looked away.
“Your father discovered Richard’s identity before anyone else.””
I froze.
“He knew Richard was Thomas Vance’s son?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn't he tell me?””
“Because he was afraid.””
“Of Richard?””
“No.””
Andrew looked at me.
“Of what would happen if you knew the truth.””
“What truth?””
Andrew's voice became quiet.
“The night Sarah died…”
He stopped.
“Say it.””
He swallowed.
“Your father was investigating financial crimes inside the company.””
My breathing slowed.
“And?””
“Someone discovered he was investigating.””
“Who?””
Andrew looked directly at me.
“Someone close to Sarah.””
The room went silent.
I thought about every person.
Every name.
Every face.
Then Andrew said the words that shattered everything.
“The person who changed Sarah's medication wasn't trying to kill her.””
I stared.
“What?””
“They were trying to hide something else.””
“What?””
Andrew looked toward the hotel building.
“The medication was changed after Sarah discovered someone was stealing from the company.””
My mind raced.
Sarah.
The company.
The betrayal.
The night she died.
It wasn't random.
It was connected.
“Who was stealing?””
Andrew looked at me.
And I knew before he spoke.
Because deep down, some part of me already knew.
“The person who has been controlling everything from the beginning.””
A pause.
Then:
“Your sister.””
The world stopped.
Victoria.
My sister.
The person who cried with me.
The person who helped raise Lily.
The person who said she wanted to protect the family.
“No.””
Andrew looked devastated.
“I wish I was wrong.””
I stepped back.
Because suddenly every piece was falling into place.
Victoria had access.
Victoria knew the company.
Victoria knew Sarah.
Victoria knew my weaknesses.
But something still didn't make sense.
The message.
The threats.
The camera.
Those weren't Victoria.
Then who?
My phone rang.
Victoria.
I answered.
No words.
Only silence.
Then her voice.
“Ethan…”
She was crying.
“I'm sorry.””
My heart sank.
“Where are you?””
“I need to tell you the truth.””
“Then tell me.””
A pause.
Then:
“I didn't betray Sarah.””
I closed my eyes.
“Victoria…”
“I was trying to protect her.””
“From who?””
Her voice broke.
“From me.””
Silence.
“What does that mean?””
Then she whispered:
“Because the person who caused Sarah's death…”
A long pause.
“…was never Richard.””
The call ended.
And I realized the truth was still waiting.
One final secret.
May you like
One final person.
One final betrayal.
