Chapter 7: The Night Someone Tried to Take Lily Away
The drive back to the hospital felt longer than it should have.
Every red light.
Every traffic delay.
Every second my car spent away from Lily felt like a mistake.
I had spent my entire life believing money solved problems.
That was what people like me were taught.
If something broke, you repaired it.
If something was lost, you replaced it.
If someone threatened you, you fought back.
But sitting in that car, staring at the hospital lights growing closer in the distance, I realized something terrifying.
Money could not protect a child from people who wanted the truth buried.
Daniel sat beside me, holding the folder we had found in the basement.
He hadn't said much since we left.
Neither had I.
There were too many questions.
Too many names.
Too many people I could no longer trust.
Finally, Daniel spoke.
"Richard.""
I kept my eyes on the road.
"What?""
"What are you going to do when we get there?""
The question sounded simple.
It wasn't.
Because the old version of me would have walked into that hospital and demanded answers.
I would have called lawyers.
Security teams.
Investigators.
I would have used every resource available.
But the old version of me had also spent years trusting the wrong people.
"I don't know.""
Daniel looked surprised.
"You don't know?""
"No.""
I tightened my grip on the steering wheel.
"Because every person who was supposed to help my family failed.""
Silence.
"My father failed Claire.""
I paused.
"Grant failed everyone.""
Another pause.
"And I failed because I never asked the right questions.""
Daniel looked down.
"Richard...""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"I need to admit that.""
Because blaming everyone else was easy.
Accepting that I had benefited from the silence was harder.
For fifteen years, I had lived inside the Hale empire.
I had enjoyed the power.
The respect.
The reputation.
And I had never wondered who paid the price for building it.
Until now.
When we arrived at the hospital, something was wrong immediately.
Too quiet.
Hospitals were never quiet.
Especially not emergency departments.
But the pediatric floor felt strangely empty.
Daniel noticed it too.
"Where is everyone?""
I walked faster.
My heart was beating harder with every step.
Then I saw the nurse's station.
The nurse who had helped Lily earlier looked up.
Her face changed when she saw me.
"Mr. Hale.""
"Where is Lily?""
She hesitated.
That was all I needed.
"Where is she?""
The nurse stood quickly.
"She was moved.""
"Moved where?""
"Another room.""
"Why?""
She looked uncomfortable.
"Doctor's orders.""
"Which doctor?""
Another hesitation.
"Dr. Reed.""
I immediately knew something was wrong.
Because Dr. Reed would never move a critical infant without informing the guardian.
And according to the hospital records, I was now Lily's emergency contact.
"Take me there.""
The nurse didn't move.
"Mr. Hale...""
My voice lowered.
"Take me there.""
She finally nodded.
We followed her down the hallway.
But the room was empty.
The bed was empty.
The machines were gone.
The blanket was folded.
Lily was gone.
For a moment, I couldn't breathe.
No.
Not again.
Not after everything.
"Evan.""
My first thought was him.
I turned around.
The boy was nowhere.
My chest tightened.
"Where is the boy?""
The nurse looked confused.
"What boy?""
"Evan Carter.""
"I thought he was with you.""
The hallway suddenly felt cold.
Daniel grabbed my arm.
"Richard.""
I was already moving.
Someone had taken them.
The question was who.
And why.
We searched every floor.
Every hallway.
Every waiting area.
Nothing.
No Evan.
No Lily.
No Dr. Reed.
No Grant.
Then I found something.
A piece of paper on the floor outside the service elevator.
A hospital transfer form.
I picked it up.
The name was written clearly.
Lily Carter.
Destination:
Private Pediatric Facility.
I looked at the signature.
Dr. Amelia Reed.
My eyes narrowed.
Something was wrong.
Because the signature looked real.
But the timing was impossible.
I called Dr. Reed's office.
No answer.
Again.
No answer.
Daniel looked at me.
"What now?""
I looked toward the service elevator.
"They didn't leave through the front.""
"How do you know?""
"Because whoever did this didn't want anyone to see.""
We went downstairs.
The parking garage was nearly empty.
Rain had started outside.
The kind of heavy rain that made the entire city disappear behind water.
A black SUV was parked near the exit.
Engine running.
My instincts immediately reacted.
"That car.""
Daniel looked.
"You think?""
"I know.""
We moved closer.
The vehicle suddenly accelerated.
Daniel ran toward it.
I followed.
But it was too late.
The SUV disappeared through the exit.
I stood in the rain, watching the taillights vanish.
Then I saw something on the ground.
A small object.
A hospital bracelet.
I picked it up.
Lily's name was printed on it.
But there was something else.
A handwritten note attached.
Three words.
*Ask your mother.*
My blood went cold.
My mother had been dead for eight years.
We returned to my office because it was the only place I felt secure.
Or at least, the only place I thought was secure.
Daniel placed the folder on the desk.
"This is getting bigger.""
I looked at the note.
"Someone wants me to find something.""
"Or someone wants to distract you.""
I nodded.
Both were possible.
My phone rang.
This time, I recognized the number.
Claire.
I answered immediately.
"Where are you?""
Her breathing was uneven.
"You found Lily?""
My heart dropped.
"You know she's missing?""
Silence.
Then:
"Richard...""
Her voice broke.
"She was never supposed to be taken.""
"Who took her?""
"I don't know.""
"You said Grant was dangerous.""
"He is.""
"Then why don't you know?""
Another pause.
"Because there is someone else.""
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
Another person.
Another secret.
Another shadow.
"Who?""
Claire's voice became barely audible.
"The person who helped your father hide me.""
I looked at Daniel.
"What are you saying?""
"I wasn't supposed to disappear.""
"What?""
"Richard, listen to me.""
Her voice became urgent.
"Your father didn't abandon me completely. He tried to fix things before he died.""
I remembered the letter.
The warning.
The regret.
"Then why didn't he tell me?""
"Because he was afraid.""
"Of Grant?""
"No.""
That answer surprised me.
"Then who?""
Claire didn't answer.
Instead, she said:
"Your mother.""
I froze.
"My mother?""
"Yes.""
"Claire, my mother died.""
"I know.""
"Then how could she—"
"Because she wasn't the victim you think she was.""
The words cut deep.
I didn't want to hear them.
Because my mother had always been the opposite of my father.
She was the gentle one.
The person who softened his harshness.
The person who taught me kindness.
The idea that she had hidden something this big felt impossible.
"You're lying.""
"I wish I was.""
The same words.
Again.
Everyone wished they were lying.
But nobody was.
"What did she do?""
Claire's voice shook.
"She made a deal with Grant.""
My stomach dropped.
"What kind of deal?""
A long silence.
Then:
"She helped him erase me.""
I couldn't speak.
The woman who raised me.
The woman who held my hand when I was a child.
The woman I remembered as loving and honest.
Had helped erase an entire branch of my family.
"No.""
"Richard—"
"No.""
I stood.
"That isn't possible.""
"Your mother was afraid.""
"Afraid of what?""
Claire whispered:
"Losing everything.""
The same fear.
The same pattern.
Everyone had sacrificed people for power.
For reputation.
For control.
And now Lily was paying the price.
A sound came through the phone.
A door opening.
Claire's breathing changed.
"Richard.""
"What?""
"Someone found me.""
My body went tense.
"Where are you?""
"I can't stay.""
"Claire.""
"Listen carefully.""
Her voice became urgent.
"If Lily wakes up and asks about her grandfather...""
I waited.
"Tell her he loved her.""
The call cut off.
I stared at the phone.
Daniel looked at me.
"What happened?""
I slowly lowered it.
"Claire is in danger.""
Then another notification appeared.
A message from an unknown number.
A photo.
I opened it.
My blood froze.
It was Lily.
Sleeping.
Alive.
But she wasn't in a hospital.
She was somewhere else.
And standing beside the bed was the last person I expected to see.
Karen Mills.
The hospital administrator.
The woman who claimed she wanted to help.
The woman who had disappeared.
Under the picture was one sentence.
*You were warned not to trust the hospital.*
I stared at the screen.
Then at Daniel.
Because suddenly I understood.
This was no longer about exposing the past.
This was about saving the people still alive.
And whoever had taken Lily...
Had just made the biggest mistake of their life.
They had given me a reason to stop playing defense.
May you like
They had taken away the one thing I still had.
Patience.
