Chapter 11: The Mother Who Was Chosen Before She Knew
The words on the screen were impossible to forget.
*THE MOTHER WAS ALWAYS THE TARGET.*
I stared at them until my eyes burned.
The room around me disappeared.
The officers.
The basement.
The files.
The hidden equipment.
Everything became distant.
Because all I could think about was one thing.
Me.
Not June.
Not Luke.
Me.
Daniel had been watching me.
Studying me.
Planning around me.
And the worst part was…
I had no idea why.
“Turn it off.””
My voice came out quietly.
Nobody moved.
“Turn that screen off.””
The technician immediately disconnected the monitor.
The message disappeared.
But it was already too late.
The words were inside my head.
Luke stepped toward me.
“Please let me explain.””
I looked at him.
And the pain in his face almost made me forget my anger.
Almost.
“How long?””
He swallowed.
“What?””
“How long did Daniel know about me?””
Luke looked down.
“I don’t know exactly.””
I laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because I couldn’t believe this was my life.
“You don’t know.””
“I know that sounds terrible.””
“It does.””
He closed his eyes.
“I met you because Daniel mentioned your family.””
My heart tightened.
“What does that mean?””
Luke hesitated.
And every hesitation felt like another betrayal.
“He told me there was someone I should meet.””
“Someone?””
“You.””
I stared at him.
“So our first meeting…”
“I swear I didn’t plan to hurt you.””
“That wasn’t my question.””
Luke looked broken.
“Our first meeting wasn’t an accident.””
The confession was quiet.
But it destroyed me.
The officer watched carefully.
Rachel looked away.
Even Eli seemed to understand that something important had changed.
I stepped back.
“So what was I?””
Luke shook his head.
“No.””
“What was I?””
“You were never a target to me.””
“But I was to Daniel.””
Luke didn’t answer.
That silence was enough.
The officer interrupted.
“Mr. Carter, we need details.””
Luke nodded.
“I met Daniel after my divorce. I was struggling with raising Eli alone.””
He looked at his son.
“I was exhausted. I trusted my brother.””
A bitter smile crossed his face.
“That was my mistake.””
Rachel whispered:
“It was all of our mistake.””
Luke continued.
“Daniel said he knew families. Good families. Stable families.””
My stomach turned.
“Families?””
“He said he could tell which people would create the best environment for children.””
The officer frowned.
“And you believed him?””
Luke looked ashamed.
“At first.””
“Why?””
“Because he helped me.””
That answer surprised me.
“How?””
Luke looked toward Eli.
“When I was struggling with custody issues after his mother died, Daniel helped me.””
My expression softened for one second.
Then hardened again.
“Helped you how?””
“He gave advice. Connected me with people. Made everything easier.””
The officer nodded slowly.
“So Daniel built trust.””
“Yes.””
Rachel looked at the floor.
“That’s what he did.””
Everyone turned toward her.
“He didn’t force people.””
Her voice was quiet.
“He convinced them.””
She looked at me.
“He made people believe they were doing the right thing.””
That was the most frightening part.
Monsters were easy to recognize.
But people who convinced themselves they were heroes?
Those were harder.
The officer asked:
“Why you?””
The question was directed at me.
I looked confused.
“What?””
“Why would Daniel select your family?””
I shook my head.
“I don’t know.””
Rachel studied me.
Then she looked at the files.
“Maybe I do.””
She walked toward the desk.
She picked up one of the folders.
“Daniel categorized families.””
The officer asked:
“Based on what?””
“Everything.””
She opened the folder.
“Financial stability. Medical history. Education. Relationships.””
She flipped another page.
“Genetic information.””
My blood ran cold.
“Genetic?””
Rachel nodded.
“He collected information.””
“Without permission?””
She looked at me.
“Yes.””
The officer immediately began documenting.
Rachel continued.
“He believed he could predict the future.””
The words made me uncomfortable.
“What does that have to do with me?””
Rachel looked at the folder.
“You had something Daniel wanted.””
I felt a chill.
“What?””
She hesitated.
“Your medical history.””
I frowned.
“My medical history?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Rachel didn’t answer.
The officer stepped closer.
“Rachel.””
She looked nervous.
“I don’t know everything.””
“But you know something.””
Rachel nodded.
“Daniel was interested in inherited traits.””
I felt sick.
“You mean genetics.””
“Yes.””
The room became silent.
“He wasn’t only choosing families.””
Rachel’s voice dropped.
“He was choosing bloodlines.””
Nobody spoke.
The words sounded unreal.
But the evidence was everywhere.
The files.
The records.
The pictures.
The years of planning.
I looked toward Eli.
Then toward June’s empty space in my mind.
My children.
Not experiments.
Not projects.
Children.
“How did he get my information?””
Luke answered quietly.
“Through me.””
I turned.
“What?””
Luke looked devastated.
“Before we got married, Daniel asked me questions.””
“What questions?””
“About you.””
“And you answered?””
“I didn’t know why.””
I stared at him.
“You told him about me.””
“I thought he was just being protective.””
The anger came back.
“You thought your brother needed my personal information to be protective?””
Luke looked away.
“I know how it sounds.””
“It sounds exactly like what happened.””
The officer moved closer.
“Did Daniel ever tell you why he was interested in Mrs. Carter?””
Luke shook his head.
“No.””
Then he stopped.
A memory crossed his face.
“What?””
He looked confused.
“There was one thing.””
“What?””
Luke swallowed.
“He asked about your mother.””
My heart stopped.
“My mother?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Luke looked frightened.
“He said your family had a history he needed to understand.””
I felt a strange fear.
Not because of Daniel.
Because suddenly I remembered things I had ignored.
Questions my mother avoided.
Old stories she never finished.
Family records she kept locked away.
Things that never seemed important.
Until now.
The officer noticed my expression.
“Mrs. Carter?””
I looked at him.
“My mother.””
“What about her?””
“I don’t know.””
The officer waited.
I shook my head.
“She never talked about certain things.””
Rachel looked interested.
“What things?””
“I don’t know exactly.””
I thought harder.
“Medical records.””
Everyone became quiet.
“What?””
“My mother always kept old medical documents.””
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
Rachel looked at Daniel’s files.
Then whispered:
“Maybe Daniel knew.””
A terrible possibility formed.
“Maybe he was looking for something.””
The officer asked:
“What?””
Rachel stared at me.
“I don’t know.””
Before anyone could continue, a sound came from upstairs.
A phone ringing.
Everyone froze.
The officer motioned.
Nobody moved.
The ringing continued.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then stopped.
A second later, Luke’s phone vibrated.
Everyone looked at him.
He slowly pulled it out.
Unknown number.
The officer signaled him to answer on speaker.
Luke pressed the button.
“Hello?””
Daniel’s voice filled the basement.
“You found the archive.””
Nobody spoke.
Luke’s expression hardened.
“Where is June?””
Daniel ignored him.
“You know, Luke…”
A pause.
“You were always my biggest disappointment.””
Luke looked angry.
“You kidnapped my daughter.””
“I protected her.””
“You don’t get to say that.””
Daniel laughed softly.
“You still don’t understand.””
The officer stepped closer.
“Daniel, your location has been traced.””
A lie.
Everyone knew it.
Daniel knew it too.
“Good attempt.””
The officer said nothing.
Daniel continued.
“I need Luke to listen.””
Luke looked at the phone.
“What do you want?””
“Come to the cabin.””
Everyone froze.
The officer shook his head.
“No.””
Luke looked at him.
Daniel continued.
“Alone.””
Luke stared at the phone.
“No.””
A pause.
Then Daniel said something that changed everything.
“Then I’ll tell June the truth when she grows up.””
My blood ran cold.
Luke’s face changed.
“What truth?””
Daniel laughed.
“The truth about who her father really is.””
The call ended.
Silence.
I looked at Luke.
“What did he mean?””
Luke didn’t answer.
The officer immediately began working.
“Trace the call.””
But Luke looked like he had seen a ghost.
“Luke.””
He slowly turned toward me.
“I don’t know.””
I almost couldn’t believe it.
Not again.
Then he whispered:
“But I think I know why Daniel chose you.””
My heart stopped.
“Why?””
Luke looked at the files.
At the documents.
At the years of secrets.
And then he said:
“Because Daniel wasn’t trying to find a family for June.””
A pause.
“He was trying to recreate one.””
I felt cold.
“What does that mean?””
Luke’s eyes filled with fear.
“It means…”
He looked at me.
“Daniel may have known something about your family before you ever met him.””
The room went silent.
The officer’s phone suddenly rang.
He answered.
His expression changed.
“What?””
Everyone watched him.
Then he looked at me.
“We found the location of the camera feed.””
My heart jumped.
“Where?””
He hesitated.
Then said:
“Not the cabin.””
A pause.
“Somewhere much closer.””
The room froze.
“Where?””
The officer looked toward the ceiling.
Then back at me.
“Your old family house.””
I felt the blood leave my face.
The house where I grew up.
The place I hadn’t visited in years.
The place where my mother kept her secrets.
The place Daniel somehow knew.
And suddenly I understood.
June wasn’t the beginning.
Eli wasn’t the beginning.
Luke wasn’t the beginning.
This had started long before I met any of them.
Someone had been following my family for years.
And now I knew the terrifying truth.
May you like
The reason Daniel chose me…
was because he had been waiting for me to come back home.
