Chapter 11: The Day Laura Tried to Take Her Mother's Home

By the time Dean's truck reached Mabel's street, three police cruisers were parked outside the white house.

Laura stood on the porch wearing a cream-colored coat and holding a thick folder.

Beside her were two men.

One carried a clipboard.

The other held a document case.

Frank and four bikers stood near the driveway.

Nobody was touching anyone.

But the atmosphere was tense enough to cut with a knife.

Dean parked and stepped out.

"What's going on?""

Frank pointed toward the porch.

"She says she's the legal owner of the property.""

Laura turned.

"Dean. This has nothing to do with you.""

Dean looked at the men beside her.

"Who are they?""

The man with the clipboard stepped forward.

"My name is Richard Hale. I'm representing Ms. Whitmore in a property transfer.""

Martin got out of the passenger seat.

"Then you should speak with me.""

Richard recognized him.

His expression changed.

"Mr. Reeves.""

"Mr. Hale.""

Martin walked up the driveway.

"I understand you're attempting to take possession of property belonging to my client.""

Richard opened his folder.

"Ms. Whitmore holds a valid deed.""

Martin removed a copy of the original will.

"She also holds legal title under her late husband's estate documents. The deed you're presenting is currently under investigation for suspected forgery.""

Laura interrupted.

"That's ridiculous.""

Martin looked at her.

"Then you won't object to an independent examination of the signatures.""

Richard shifted his weight.

"Perhaps we should postpone this.""

Laura turned sharply.

"No. We have the documents.""

Martin handed him the court notice.

"Then you'll want to read this.""

Richard examined it.

His expression grew serious.

"Ms. Whitmore, you didn't tell me there was a pending fraud investigation.""

Laura snatched the paper.

"Because there isn't one!""

Martin remained calm.

"There is now.""

One of the police officers approached.

"What's the issue here?""

Martin explained that Mabel was the legal occupant and that the property transfer was disputed.

The officer looked at Laura.

"Do you have a court order authorizing eviction?""

Laura handed him the folder.

He examined the documents.

After a minute, he shook his head.

"This doesn't authorize removal of the current occupant.""

Laura's face reddened.

"She's my mother. I'm trying to protect her.""

The officer looked toward Mabel.

"Ma'am, do you want to leave your home?""

Mabel stepped onto the porch.

"No.""

"Do you want these people inside?""

"No.""

The officer nodded.

"Then nobody is entering without your permission or proper legal authority.""

Laura stared at her mother.

"You're really doing this?""

Mabel's voice trembled.

"You're the one trying to take my house.""

"I'm trying to keep you safe!""

"Then why did you take my money?""

Laura looked around.

Several neighbors had gathered on the sidewalk.

She lowered her voice.

"Mom, please. We can discuss this privately.""

Mabel shook her head.

"No more private discussions.""

Dean looked at her with quiet approval.

Laura turned toward Richard.

"Tell them who owns the house.""

Richard closed his folder.

"At this point, I recommend we leave.""

Laura stared at him.

"You work for me!""

"I work for clients who provide accurate information. I was not told the deed was disputed.""

He stepped away.

Laura's expression darkened.

"Fine. I'll handle this myself.""

She pulled out her phone and called someone.

Dean watched her pace across the porch.

"Yes," she said sharply.

"I need you to come here. Now.""

She ended the call.

Martin turned toward Mabel.

"Who is she calling?""

Mabel looked exhausted.

"I don't know.""

Five minutes later, a black sedan pulled into the driveway.

A tall man stepped out.

He wore a dark suit and carried a leather briefcase.

Laura immediately approached him.

"Thank goodness you're here.""

The man looked at Martin.

"Mr. Reeves.""

Martin's expression changed.

"Judge Cooper?""

Dean frowned.

"Judge?""

Martin spoke quietly.

"Daniel Cooper. The judge who approved Laura's original estate petition.""

The judge looked at Laura.

"Why am I here?""

"Because my mother is being manipulated by these people.""

Judge Cooper glanced at Mabel.

Then at the police officers.

"I was told there was a family dispute.""

Martin stepped forward.

"There is a suspected fraud investigation involving an estate filing you approved eighteen months ago.""

The judge stiffened.

"I approved the petition based on the documents submitted.""

"One of those documents appears to contain a forged signature.""

"That's a serious accusation.""

"It is.""

Martin handed him a copy.

The judge examined the signature.

Then he looked at the notary certification.

"Who notarized this?""

"Patricia Collins.""

The judge's face changed.

"Patricia Collins?""

Martin nodded.

"Do you know her?""

The judge hesitated.

"She worked for a legal services office I used years ago.""

Dean looked at Martin.

Martin's expression was unreadable.

The judge handed back the paper.

"This matter should be referred to the appropriate authorities. I cannot discuss the merits of the dispute here.""

Laura looked furious.

"Daniel, you promised you'd help me.""

The judge turned toward her.

"Be quiet, Laura.""

It was the first time anyone had spoken to her that way.

She stared at him.

"What?""

"I said be quiet.""

He looked at Martin.

"I'll have my clerk review the original filing.""

Martin nodded.

"Thank you.""

The judge returned to his sedan.

Laura watched him leave.

Then she turned on her mother.

"You've destroyed everything!""

Mabel flinched.

Dean stepped forward.

"Don't.""

Laura pointed at him.

"This is your fault!""

Dean looked at the grocery bags visible through the kitchen window.

"No. I think it started long before I bought your mother breakfast.""

Laura's face twisted.

She turned toward Emily, who had just arrived with Michael.

"Emily! Come here!""

The girl stepped behind her father.

Laura's expression softened instantly.

"Sweetheart, come with me. We're going home.""

Emily shook her head.

"I am home.""

Laura blinked.

"What did you say?""

Emily took Mabel's hand.

"I want to stay with Grandma and Dad.""

Laura stared at her daughter.

"You don't understand. These people are filling your head with lies.""

Emily's voice trembled.

"Then why did you tell me Grandma was dead?""

Laura went silent.

"Why did you tell me Dad didn't love me?""

"Emily—"

"Why did you make me sign papers at the bank?""

Laura reached for her.

Michael stepped between them.

"Don't.""

Laura glared at him.

"Stay out of this.""

Michael's voice remained calm.

"I'm her father.""

Laura's eyes narrowed.

Then she looked at Mabel.

"You think you've won?""

Mabel shook her head.

"No. I think I finally understand what happened.""

Laura leaned closer.

"You don't understand anything.""

She whispered something only Mabel could hear.

"Ask your lawyer what happened the night Arthur died.""

Mabel's face went white.

Laura stepped away.

Dean noticed immediately.

"What did she say?""

Mabel didn't answer.

Laura climbed into her SUV and drove away.

The police officers remained long enough to document the disputed documents and take statements.

When they finally left, Martin approached Mabel.

"Mrs. Whitmore, what did Laura say to you?""

Mabel stared at the road.

"She told me to ask you what happened the night Arthur died.""

Martin's expression changed.

He looked genuinely troubled.

"Why?""

"Did something happen?""

Martin was silent for several seconds.

Then he slowly opened his briefcase.

"There is one document I haven't shown you.""

He removed a hospital incident report.

Mabel looked at the date.

It was the night Arthur died.

Dean leaned closer.

Martin pointed to a section near the bottom.

*Authorized visitor: Laura Whitmore.*

Beneath it was another entry.

*Medication administered outside scheduled treatment window.*

Mabel gripped the paper.

"What does that mean?""

Martin swallowed.

"I don't know yet.""

He turned the page.

There was a handwritten note from a nurse.

*Patient became unresponsive shortly after visitor departure. Family member requested no additional questions regarding medication.*

Mabel stared at the report.

Then she looked at Martin.

"Are you saying my daughter had something to do with Arthur's death?""

May you like

Martin carefully folded the document.

"I'm saying we need to find the nurse who wrote this report.""
