Chapter 7: The Evidence My Grandfather Hid From Everyone
I stayed inside Room 317 for almost three hours.
Three hours of staring at photographs.
Three hours of reading notes written by a man who was no longer alive to explain himself.
Three hours of realizing that the grandfather I thought I knew had been fighting a war nobody in the family knew existed.
The most disturbing part wasn’t the evidence.
It was the fact that Grandpa had never told me.
Not directly.
He had always been honest with me.
At least, I thought he had.
But now I understood something.
He wasn’t hiding things because he didn’t trust me.
He was hiding things because he was protecting me.
I walked toward the investigation board again.
At the center was a photo of Whitmore Technologies headquarters.
Around it were names.
Executives.
Partners.
Family members.
Everyone connected to the company.
My eyes stopped on one name.
Margaret Whitmore.
My mother.
There were several documents attached to her photo.
I hesitated before picking them up.
For some reason, that felt worse than seeing my father’s name.
Maybe because my mother was different.
My father had always been cold.
Ambitious.
Difficult.
But my mother had always presented herself as the emotional one.
The caring one.
The person who cried when others succeeded.
The person who hugged me when I was disappointed.
The person who told me she loved me.
Even if her actions said something different.
I opened the first file.
It was a financial report.
At first, it looked normal.
Numbers.
Transactions.
Company transfers.
Then I saw a pattern.
Several payments had been made to outside companies.
Companies I didn’t recognize.
I checked the dates.
They started four years ago.
The same year Grandpa began stepping away from daily operations.
The same year my father became CEO.
The same year Vanessa became one of the youngest executives in company history.
My hands became cold.
I grabbed another document.
This one was a list of offshore accounts.
My eyes moved down the page.
Then stopped.
One company name appeared repeatedly.
Mason Ridge Holdings.
I had heard that name before.
But where?
I searched through the files.
At the bottom of another document was a handwritten note.
Grandpa’s handwriting.
*Follow the money. The person receiving it is not the person you expect.*
My heart started pounding.
Not the person you expect.
I looked back at the board.
My mother’s picture.
My father’s picture.
Vanessa’s picture.
Who was he talking about?
A sound suddenly came from the hallway.
I froze.
Someone was outside.
The door handle moved.
I quickly grabbed the nearest folder and stepped behind a shelf.
The door opened.
A man entered.
Not security.
Not the manager.
Someone I recognized.
Daniel Reeves.
Vanessa’s husband.
My first thought was confusion.
My second was fear.
Why was Daniel here?
He walked into the room slowly.
He wasn’t smiling.
That alone was unusual.
Daniel was always smiling.
At family dinners.
At company events.
In photographs.
He had built his entire personality around being charming.
But now he looked nervous.
He looked around the room.
Then he whispered:
“Arthur, you were right.””
My breath caught.
He was talking to Grandpa.
Daniel moved toward the board.
He looked at the photographs.
Then he said something that made my blood run cold.
“I should have told Evelyn sooner.””
My heart stopped.
Me?
Why was Daniel talking about me?
I stepped out from behind the shelf.
“Then tell me now.””
Daniel spun around.
His face turned pale.
“Evelyn?””
I stared at him.
“What are you doing here?””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
That told me enough.
“You knew about this room?””
Daniel looked away.
“Yes.””
“How?””
He rubbed his face.
“Because your grandfather showed me.””
That answer shocked me.
“Why?””
Daniel looked at the board.
“Because he needed someone else to verify what he found.””
I walked closer.
“And you?””
“I helped him.””
I laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was impossible.
“You helped him investigate my family?””
Daniel looked guilty.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
His silence lasted too long.
Then he said:
“Because I found something too.””
I waited.
“Before I married Vanessa, I worked in financial consulting.””
I knew that.
Everyone did.
What I didn’t know was why he was telling me now.
“I noticed irregular transfers involving Whitmore Technologies.””
My eyes narrowed.
“And you told Grandpa?””
“Yes.””
“What did he do?””
Daniel looked at me.
“He wasn’t surprised.””
That sentence hit hard.
“He already knew.””
I looked around the room.
All those documents.
All those secrets.
Grandpa had known.
He had known everything.
“Why didn’t he expose them?””
Daniel’s expression became serious.
“Because he wasn’t trying to destroy his family.””
I looked at Vanessa’s picture.
“He should have.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“He wanted proof.””
I picked up the folder.
“Proof of what?””
Daniel stared at the photograph of my mother.
Then he answered:
“Who was really behind it.””
The room went silent.
“Daniel.””
He looked at me.
“You need to understand something.””
“What?””
“Your grandfather never believed your father was the mastermind.””
My stomach tightened.
“Then who?””
Daniel looked at the board.
May you like
And whispered:
“Your mother.””
