Chapter 8: When The Family Turned Against Her Again
Peace lasted longer than anyone expected.
But peace is fragile when people are still learning new habits.
Especially when old expectations return.
The problem started with a family gathering.
Marcus’s cousin, Tyler, was getting married.
The entire family was invited.
And because Aaliyah had always been the person everyone relied on, everyone naturally assumed she would help.
The requests started small.
“Can you help organize the decorations?””
“Can you check with the caterer?””
“Can you make sure everyone knows where to sit?””
Aaliyah smiled politely.
“I’m sorry, I can’t.””
Each time, people looked surprised.
Not angry.
Not yet.
Just surprised.
Because they were still adjusting to the new Aaliyah.
The woman who helped because she wanted to.
Not because she was expected to.
Then came the final request.
Denise called her.
“I need you to handle the rehearsal dinner.””
Aaliyah paused.
“Handle?””
“Yes. You’re so good at these things.””
Aaliyah looked at the calendar.
“I’m working that week.””
“You can make time.””
The sentence immediately reminded her of the old Denise.
The one who believed Aaliyah’s time belonged to everyone else.
“I’m sorry. I can’t.””
A silence followed.
Then Denise sighed.
“I thought things had changed.””
Aaliyah felt the old pressure return.
The need to prove herself.
The need to explain.
But she caught herself.
“No, Denise.””
“What?””
“Things have changed.””
Her voice was calm.
“I changed.””
Denise became quiet.
“I still love this family. I still care.””
Aaliyah continued.
“But caring doesn’t mean I say yes to everything.””
The call ended politely.
But Aaliyah knew.
Someone was going to be upset.
She was right.
At the family dinner that weekend, the tension was obvious.
Aaliyah noticed the whispers.
The looks.
The uncomfortable silence.
Finally, Denise’s sister, Patricia, spoke.
“I have to ask something.””
Everyone looked over.
“What?””
Patricia looked at Aaliyah.
“What happened to you?””
Aaliyah blinked.
“What do you mean?””
“You used to be so helpful.””
Aaliyah smiled slightly.
“I’m still helpful.””
“Not like before.””
“No.””
Aaliyah nodded.
“Not like before.””
The room became quiet.
Patricia crossed her arms.
“It seems like you changed after one argument.””
Aaliyah looked around the table.
“No.””
She spoke softly.
“I changed after years of pretending I was okay.””
Nobody responded.
Because nobody could.
Then someone unexpected spoke.
Denise.
“She’s right.””
Everyone looked at her.
Denise took a breath.
“I asked too much from her.””
Patricia looked shocked.
“Denise—”
“No.””
Denise shook her head.
“I did.””
Aaliyah looked at her.
This was different.
Denise wasn’t defending herself.
She was defending Aaliyah.
“She doesn’t owe us her exhaustion.””
The words surprised everyone.
Especially Aaliyah.
After dinner, Marcus found Aaliyah outside.
“You okay?””
She nodded.
“I think so.””
He smiled.
“You know what’s funny?””
“What?””
“Six months ago, my mom would have been the last person to say that.””
Aaliyah smiled.
“I know.””
Marcus looked toward the house.
“I’m proud of her.””
Aaliyah looked at him.
“And you?””
He looked confused.
“What about me?””
“I’m proud of you too.””
The words caught him off guard.
“Really?””
“Yes.””
Aaliyah smiled.
“Because you finally stopped trying to make everyone comfortable.””
Marcus nodded.
May you like
“And started protecting what matters.””
“Exactly.””
