Chapter 8: The Mother in the Dark
“Mom!””
Emily ran toward the doorway.
Daniel caught her before she crossed the threshold.
“Down!””
Another shot cracked through the darkness.
A window exploded behind them.
Emily dropped to her knees as shards of glass rained onto the porch.
“Isabel!””
“I’m here!””
Her mother’s voice came from inside.
Alive.
Terrified.
But alive.
Daniel pulled Emily behind a stone column.
“Stay here.””
“No.””
“Emily.””
“She needs us.””
“She needs us to stay alive.””
He looked toward the doorway.
“Razor!””
“I’m on it.””
Razor moved low across the yard while Caruso and Michael covered the windows.
The old meeting house remained black.
No movement.
No sound.
Then Isabel shouted from inside.
“Daniel, don’t come in!””
Daniel froze.
“Why?””
“Because they wired the place!””
Everyone went still.
Emily's stomach dropped.
“Wired it?””
Isabel's voice trembled.
“Yes.””
“How much?””
“The entire main room.””
Razor swore.
Daniel looked toward the building.
“Who did this?””
No answer.
Then a voice came from the darkness inside.
Victor.
“You really should have listened to your wife.””
Emily gripped her father's sleeve.
“Where is he?””
Victor laughed.
“Everywhere.””
Daniel stared into the darkness.
“Let her go.””
“I haven't touched her.””
Emily's mother shouted.
“Daniel, it's a trap!””
“I know.””
“Then why are you here?””
Emily heard the pain in her mother's voice.
Because there were years between them.
Years of fear.
Years of silence.
Years Emily had spent wondering why neither parent had come for her.
Now both were standing on opposite sides of a dark doorway.
And somehow, after all that time, they were still protecting her.
Daniel took a breath.
“Isabel, are you hurt?””
“No.””
“Can you move?””
“Yes.””
“Then listen carefully.””
His voice became calm.
“Look behind the fireplace.””
A pause.
“I see it.””
“There’s a panel.””
“I found it.””
“Open it.””
Emily looked at Razor.
“What is he doing?””
Razor whispered, “Getting her out without triggering whatever Victor planted.””
The fireplace shifted.
A narrow section of wall opened.
Isabel emerged through a hidden passage.
Emily stared at her.
Her mother was thinner than she remembered.
Her hair was streaked with gray.
A small scar crossed her cheek.
But she was unmistakably Isabel.
Emily's breath caught.
For several seconds, neither of them moved.
Then Isabel whispered:
“Emily.””
Emily's eyes filled.
“You're real.””
Isabel covered her mouth.
“Oh, my God.””
She stepped forward.
Emily didn't move.
Her mother stopped three feet away.
“I wanted to come to you.””
Emily's voice shook.
“Why didn't you?””
“I was afraid.””
“Of Victor?””
Isabel looked at Daniel.
“Of everyone.””
Emily felt anger rise.
“You left me.””
“No.””
“You disappeared.””
“I was taken away.””
“By who?””
Isabel looked at Daniel.
“Your father knows.””
Emily turned toward him.
“Dad?””
Daniel looked down.
“Your mother was kidnapped.””
Emily froze.
“What?””
“After you were born, Victor discovered Isabel knew about the land records.””
Isabel nodded.
“He wanted the list.””
“What list?””
“The one your father told you about.””
“The names.””
“Yes.””
Emily looked between them.
“Then why did everyone say she abandoned us?””
Isabel's voice broke.
“Because that was the story Victor wanted told.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“I spent years trying to find her.””
“I spent years trying to get back to you.””
Emily stared at them.
“You both thought the other had left.””
Neither answered.
She suddenly understood.
Victor hadn't simply tried to kill Daniel.
He had destroyed their family piece by piece.
He had made each of them believe the others had abandoned them.
And it had worked.
Until tonight.
Emily crossed the last few feet.
She looked at her mother.
Then stopped.
“Why did you send Victor the location?””
Isabel closed her eyes.
“Because it wasn't the real location.””
Emily remembered Bishop.
“The false location.””
“Yes.””
“You were trying to trap him.””
“Yes.””
“Then who gave him the real one?””
Isabel looked at Daniel.
“I don't know.””
Daniel said quietly, “Neither do I.””
Razor entered the conversation.
“We have another problem.””
Everyone turned.
He held up a small device.
A red light blinked.
“This is a remote trigger.””
Emily's face went pale.
“How long?””
“Unknown.””
A voice came through the building's speakers.
Victor.
“Congratulations.””
His voice echoed around them.
“You found each other.””
Daniel looked toward the ceiling.
“Show yourself.””
“Why?””
“You're done.””
Victor laughed.
“Not yet.””
A monitor flickered to life in one of the windows.
Victor appeared on the screen.
He was sitting in a car.
Beside him was a stack of documents.
And a gun.
“You've been chasing the wrong thing all night.””
Daniel stared at him.
“What do you want?””
“The box.””
“What box?””
Victor smiled.
“The one your family found twenty-two years ago.””
Emily looked at Isabel.
“What's in it?””
Isabel answered before Daniel could.
“Proof.””
“Of what?””
“Who really owns the land.””
Victor's expression darkened.
“Not just land.””
He held up a document.
“Power.””
Emily didn't understand.
Victor continued.
“Some of the biggest families in California built their fortunes on property they never legally owned.””
Razor frowned.
“They forged titles.””
“Yes.””
Caruso's eyes widened.
“And the original list proves it.””
Victor smiled.
“Now you understand.””
Emily stared at the screen.
“So your whole operation was about that list?””
Victor shook his head.
“My operation was about making sure nobody else could use it.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You murdered people for paper.””
Victor's expression became cold.
“I protected an empire.””
“You destroyed families.””
“I gave people exactly what they wanted.””
“What did they want?””
“Security.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“You call fear security?””
Victor looked at Emily.
“You should ask your father what he did with the first list.””
Emily turned.
“What is he talking about?””
Daniel didn't answer.
Victor laughed.
“He never told you.””
“Tell me,” Emily demanded.
Daniel closed his eyes.
“There were two lists.””
Emily stared.
“Two?””
“The first list belonged to the Nine.””
“And the second?””
“I created it.””
“For what?””
“To expose the first.””
Emily felt dizzy.
Daniel continued.
“I thought if the names became public, people would be protected.””
“But?””
“People were willing to kill for it.””
Victor smiled.
“Finally.””
He leaned toward the camera.
“Daniel understood.””
Emily looked at him.
“Then why did you keep fighting?””
Daniel stared at his daughter.
“Because I failed once.””
“When?””
“When your uncle died.””
Emily remembered the name.
“The Ninth.””
Daniel nodded.
“He discovered the truth first.””
“What happened?””
“He was murdered.””
“By Victor?””
“By men whose names were on the list.””
Emily looked at Victor.
“And you?””
Victor smiled.
“I was the one who found the body.””
Daniel glared.
“You could have saved him.””
“He was already dying.””
“You watched.””
“Yes.””
The calmness of the admission horrified Emily.
Victor leaned back.
“I watched because I finally understood what power was.””
He looked directly at Emily.
“Your father still doesn't.””
A beeping sound came from the meeting house.
Razor looked at the device.
“That's a countdown.””
Daniel's face changed.
“How long?””
“Three minutes.””
Emily's mother grabbed her.
“Run.””
They rushed toward the vehicles.
Victor's voice came through the speakers one final time.
“Bring me the original box.””
Daniel shouted toward the building.
“You'll never get it!””
Victor laughed.
“Then neither will you.””
The line went dead.
The timer continued.
2:41.
They reached the trucks.
Razor started the engine.
Caruso climbed into another vehicle.
Michael helped Isabel inside.
Emily turned back.
Her father was still standing near the meeting house.
“Dad!””
He looked at her.
“Go.””
“I'm not leaving you.””
“I'll be right behind you.””
“Promise?””
He paused.
Then smiled.
“I promise.””
Emily hesitated.
Then climbed into the truck.
They sped away.
Thirty seconds later, the meeting house exploded.
Fire erupted through the windows.
The shock wave shook both vehicles.
Emily twisted around.
“Dad!””
She watched the burning building through the rear window.
No sign of Daniel.
“No!””
Isabel grabbed her.
“Emily, he's alive.””
“How do you know?””
“He always survives.””
The truck continued down the road.
Then the driver-side door of a second vehicle opened ahead.
Daniel emerged from the darkness.
He had escaped through another tunnel.
Emily sobbed with relief.
Razor pulled alongside him.
Daniel climbed into their truck.
Emily threw her arms around him.
He held her tightly.
“I told you.””
“You scared me.””
“I know.””
She pulled back.
“I hate you.””
He smiled.
“Fair.””
Isabel watched them.
Tears filled her eyes.
Daniel reached for her hand.
For a moment, the family was together.
Then Michael spoke.
“There’s something on the radio.””
Everyone turned.
A police bulletin crackled through the speakers.
“Authorities have discovered multiple bodies near the original Fresno land site…”
Emily stared.
“What?””
The voice continued.
“Investigators believe the remains may be connected to a decades-old criminal conspiracy involving property fraud and organized extortion.””
Razor turned up the volume.
Then the announcer said the one thing that made Daniel go pale.
“One of the bodies appears to belong to Samuel Pike.””
Emily looked at him.
“Samuel?””
Daniel nodded.
“He was alive yesterday.””
The radio continued.
“Police have also issued an arrest warrant for former sheriff William Mercer…”
Caruso whispered, “That's one of the names.””
The names were already coming out.
The truth had started moving.
But Emily saw the look on her father's face.
He wasn't relieved.
He was terrified.
“What's wrong?””
Daniel stared at the road.
“The list is being released.””
“Yes.””
“That's not what Victor wanted.””
“What did he want?””
Daniel looked at Emily.
“He wanted us to think the list was the end.””
“What is it?””
Daniel's eyes dropped to the jacket.
“The list is only the beginning.””
Emily's heart sank.
“Then what else is there?””
Isabel answered quietly.
“The box.””
Emily looked at her.
“What box?””
“The box that started everything.””
Daniel nodded.
“And Victor isn't looking for the list anymore.””
“Then what is he looking for?””
Daniel reached inside his jacket.
He pulled out a photograph.
It showed an old wooden box buried beneath the earth.
On the back was a handwritten location.
Emily recognized the handwriting.
It wasn't Daniel's.
It was her mother's.
Daniel looked at Isabel.
“You still have it.””
She nodded.
“I never gave it to Victor.””
Emily stared at the photograph.
“Where is the box?””
Isabel looked at her.
“Under your old house.””
Emily froze.
“Our old house was demolished.””
“I know.””
“Then how—”
Isabel interrupted.
“Your father didn't bury it under the house.””
She pointed to the photograph.
“He buried it under your bedroom floor.””
Emily's breath caught.
“My bedroom?””
Daniel nodded.
“Because nobody searches beneath a child's room.””
The truck fell silent.
Then Emily noticed something else in the photograph.
A tiny mark carved into the wooden box.
The same circle crossed by a line.
Her father's symbol.
She touched the jacket.
And suddenly understood why he had never wanted her to give it away.
The jacket wasn't simply carrying his past.
It was pointing her toward the place where he had buried the future.
Outside, dawn began to spread over California.
But miles away, another vehicle was already turning toward the ruins of the Rodriguez house.
Victor sat behind the wheel.
On the passenger seat was an old shovel.
May you like
He smiled.
“Let's see what Ghost left his little girl.””
