Chapter 9: My Mother's Final Beneficiary

Richard wouldn't tell us the name upstairs.

That scared me.

He insisted we go back to the dining room, organize the documents, and verify the amendment before he said anything else.

Dad hated that.

I hated it more.

But Richard wouldn't budge.

"If Marcus knows about the amendment, we have to assume he may be trying to manipulate us.""

"Then tell us what it says," Dad said.

"I need the certified copy.""

"You drafted it.""

"Seventeen years ago.""

"You remember the beneficiary.""

Richard looked at me.

"Yes.""

"Then say it.""

He hesitated.

"Not until I'm certain nothing changed afterward.""

That was lawyer language for something terrible.

He opened his briefcase and removed a secure tablet.

While he logged into his firm's archived records, Brianna sat across from me.

Her eyes were swollen.

Denise remained near the kitchen.

Nobody wanted her close.

Dad had already told her that their marriage was over.

Not "maybe.""

Not "we'll discuss this later.""

Over.

Denise hadn't argued.

Maybe even she understood there was no marriage left to save.

Richard finally found the file.

He read silently.

Then closed his eyes.

"It's authentic.""

Dad leaned forward.

"Who?""

Richard turned the tablet around.

I read the document.

AMENDMENT TO THE MONICA CARTER FAMILY TRUST.

Most of it was legal language I didn't understand.

Then I found the section.

Primary beneficiary: Maya Elise Carter.

Contingent beneficiary—

I stopped.

"No.""

Brianna looked at me.

"What?""

I read the name again.

BRIANNA HARPER.

Brianna stood so quickly her chair fell backward.

"What?""

Denise covered her mouth.

Dad looked at Richard.

"Monica named Brianna?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

Richard looked toward Denise.

"Because Monica knew.""

Brianna's face went blank.

"Knew what?""

"Who your father was.""

Silence.

Richard continued.

"Monica discovered Denise was pregnant shortly before Marcus disappeared.""

Denise sat down.

"I never told her.""

"No," Richard said.

"Marcus did.""

Denise stared at him.

"What?""

"He contacted Monica.""

"When?""

"Approximately two months before the reported boating accident.""

Denise shook her head.

"No.""

"He told her you were pregnant.""

"Why?""

"Because he wanted money.""

That sounded like Marcus.

Richard explained.

Marcus believed Evelyn would pay to keep an illegitimate grandchild out of the family's legal affairs.

Instead, Evelyn did the opposite.

She wanted Brianna protected.

Denise stared at the floor.

"She never told me.""

"Because Marcus demanded money from her.""

Brianna whispered, "For me?""

"Using you.""

Richard's answer was gentle.

But it still hurt.

"He threatened to publicly challenge several property transfers unless Evelyn paid him. She refused.""

"What did Mom do?""

"Monica convinced Evelyn to create a separate protection for you.""

Brianna looked stunned.

"Why?""

"Because you were innocent.""

That silenced everyone.

Richard looked at me.

"Your mother believed children should not pay for their parents' mistakes.""

I thought about Mom's video.

Her smile.

Her voice.

The woman I'd spent eleven years missing had protected a baby she'd never even met.

A baby who would eventually grow up, move into her house, become my stepsister, and break her photograph.

Life had a cruel sense of humor.

Brianna started crying again.

"She left me money?""

"Not exactly.""

Richard turned the tablet.

"The amendment made you a contingent beneficiary.""

"What does that mean?""

"If Maya died before activation of the trust, or voluntarily declined her inheritance, a portion would transfer to you.""

Denise looked up.

"How much?""

Everyone turned toward her.

She realized how awful the question sounded.

"I didn't mean—"

Dad laughed bitterly.

"Of course that's your first question.""

"I was asking for Brianna.""

"No," Brianna said.

Denise looked at her.

"No what?""

"Stop using me.""

"I'm not.""

"You've been using me all day.""

"Brianna—"

"Stop.""

Richard continued.

"Under normal circumstances, Brianna has no claim against Maya's primary interest.""

I felt relief.

Then guilt for feeling relief.

Brianna noticed.

"It's okay.""

I looked at her.

"I wasn't—"

"I'd be relieved too.""

That was probably the first honest thing we'd ever said to each other.

Dad asked, "Why would Marcus care about the amendment?""

Richard's expression became serious again.

"Because if Maya's claim were invalidated rather than merely delayed, there might be grounds to challenge distribution.""

"To Brianna?""

"Potentially.""

Brianna shook her head.

"I don't want it.""

"This isn't about what you want.""

Richard looked toward Denise.

"If Marcus could establish control over Brianna's financial affairs—"

"I'm seventeen," Brianna said.

"Exactly.""

My stomach dropped.

"He's using her.""

Richard nodded.

"Possibly.""

Denise stood.

"He doesn't have control over Brianna.""

"Not currently.""

"What does that mean?""

"If Marcus proves paternity, he could attempt to assert parental rights.""

Brianna looked horrified.

"After seventeen years?""

"It would be difficult. Especially given his history.""

Dad leaned forward.

"But he doesn't need to win.""

Richard looked at him.

"No.""

"He just needs a legal fight.""

"Exactly.""

I understood.

A fight could delay the trust.

Freeze property.

Create confusion.

And during confusion, money disappeared.

That seemed to be Marcus's specialty.

Then Richard's phone rang.

He checked the number.

His expression tightened.

"Excuse me.""

He answered.

"Coleman.""

We watched him.

"Yes.""

Pause.

"When?""

Another pause.

"Send it immediately.""

He hung up.

"What happened?"" Dad asked.

"The lender responded.""

"The loan?""

"They froze it.""

Dad exhaled.

"But?""

Richard looked at me.

"There was another application.""

My stomach sank.

"How many loans are there?""

"This wasn't a loan.""

"What was it?""

"A sale.""

Nobody spoke.

Richard's phone buzzed.

An email arrived.

He opened the attachment.

Dad moved beside him.

"What are they selling?""

Richard's face darkened.

"One of the commercial properties.""

"Which one?""

"Broad Street.""

Dad looked confused.

I wasn't.

I'd heard Mom mention Broad Street in the video.

One of the buildings owned by Carter-Holloway Holdings.

"Can they sell it?""

"No.""

"Then what's the problem?""

Richard enlarged the document.

"Someone produced a trust resolution authorizing the transaction.""

"Fake?""

"Obviously.""

"Whose signature?""

Richard looked at me.

"Yours.""

I almost laughed.

"I'm sixteen.""

"The document claims you're eighteen.""

Dad slammed his hand against the table.

"This is insane.""

Richard kept reading.

Then he became still.

"What now?""

"The witness.""

"What witness?""

"The document has a witness attesting that Maya personally signed it.""

Dad leaned over.

"Who?""

Richard turned the tablet.

Denise Carter.

We all looked at her.

She shook her head.

"No.""

Dad stood.

"Don't.""

"I didn't sign that!""

"How many times are you going to say that?""

"I'm telling the truth!""

"Like you told the truth about the loans?""

"I signed the first loan paperwork. I admitted that.""

"And the relocation filing?""

Denise hesitated.

Dad laughed.

"There it is.""

"I signed some forms Daniel gave me.""

"Marcus.""

"I DIDN'T KNOW!""

Her scream echoed through the room.

Brianna flinched.

Denise lowered her voice.

"I didn't know Daniel was Marcus.""

Richard studied the sale document.

Then he looked at her.

"This signature may actually support your claim.""

Dad stared at him.

"How?""

Richard pointed.

"The witness signature doesn't match the signature on Denise's driver's license.""

Denise looked relieved.

"Thank God.""

Richard wasn't finished.

"But it does match another signature.""

He opened the old ledger photographs.

Then one of Grandma Evelyn's preserved records.

Same curve.

Same heavy downward stroke.

Marcus.

"He signed Denise's name.""

Dad stared at the papers.

"So he's been creating documents as everyone.""

"Yes.""

My phone buzzed.

A text.

Unknown number.

I didn't open it.

I showed Dad.

Richard said, "Don't respond.""

Dad opened the message.

There was a photograph.

My stomach dropped.

It had been taken from across the street.

Our house.

Today.

Dad immediately went to the window.

Nobody was outside.

Then a second message arrived.

A photograph of me leaving school two days earlier.

Dad's face changed.

"Call the police.""

Richard already was.

A third message appeared.

This time it was only text.

MONICA SHOULD HAVE GIVEN ME WHAT WAS MINE.

Then another.

THE LEDGER FOR THE GIRL.

Dad stared at the screen.

"What girl?""

Nobody answered.

Then Brianna's phone rang.

She looked at it.

Unknown number.

Her face went white.

Dad said, "Don't answer.""

But a voicemail appeared almost immediately.

Brianna pressed play.

Marcus's voice.

"Hello, sweetheart.""

She dropped the phone onto the table.

Denise began sobbing.

The recording continued.

"Your mother has lied to you about many things. So has the Carter family.""

Brianna shook her head.

"No.""

"But I'm going to give you something they never did.""

The message paused.

"The truth.""

Richard reached for the phone.

Marcus continued.

"Ask Maya to look at the last page of Evelyn's ledger.""

I grabbed the notebook.

My hands shook as I flipped toward the back.

Names.

Numbers.

Properties.

Then the final page.

There was only one entry.

A date from seventeen years earlier.

BRIANNA H.

Below it:

DNA CONFIRMED.

My eyes lifted toward Brianna.

She stared at me.

But there was another line beneath it.

One I hadn't expected.

MONICA'S REQUEST: CHILD TO RECEIVE PROTECTION REGARDLESS OF MARCUS'S STATUS.

And beneath that, written later in darker ink:

MARCUS NOT BIOLOGICAL FATHER.

Nobody moved.

Brianna whispered, "What?""

Richard took the ledger.

He read the sentence twice.

"That doesn't make sense.""

Denise stopped crying.

Her face had gone completely blank.

Brianna turned toward her mother.

"Who is my father?""

Denise said nothing.

"Mom.""

Silence.

"WHO IS MY FATHER?""

Denise looked at Dad.

Then at me.

Finally, she looked at Richard.

"You really don't know?""

Richard's face tightened.

"Know what?""

Denise gave a broken laugh.

"Monica didn't add Brianna to that trust because of Marcus.""

My skin prickled.

Richard stood.

"Then why?""

Denise's eyes filled with tears.

"Because Brianna's father was someone Monica loved.""

Brianna stared at her.

"Who?""

Denise whispered the answer.

"Thomas Carter.""

Dad stopped breathing.

I looked at him.

"Who is Thomas Carter?""

Dad's face had turned white.

May you like

When he finally spoke, his voice barely came out.

"My brother.""
