Chapter 9: The Person Behind Monica’s Perfect Plan
Jason played the voicemail three times.
Each time, the same feeling returned.
Disbelief.
Not because he was surprised anymore.
He wasn’t.
He had already seen enough.
The hidden documents.
The fake concerns.
The property evaluation.
The emails.
The lies.
But hearing Monica’s voice made everything different.
Because a written plan could still be explained away.
A document could be misunderstood.
An email could be taken out of context.
But a person’s own words were harder to escape.
*Evelyn is the problem.*
Jason sat alone in the living room, staring at his phone.
The house was quiet.
Too quiet.
He thought about all the moments he had missed.
Every time Evelyn became silent when Monica entered the room.
Every time his mother said, “I’m fine,” when she clearly wasn’t.
Every time Monica smiled at dinner while making Evelyn feel unwanted.
Jason had mistaken silence for peace.
He had mistaken kindness for weakness.
And now he understood something painful.
His mother wasn’t afraid because she was confused.
She was afraid because she knew exactly what was happening.
His phone buzzed.
A message from an unknown number.
*You heard the voicemail. Good. Now you need to know who Daniel is.*
Jason froze.
Daniel.
The name from the emails.
The real estate agent.
The person Monica had been communicating with.
Jason replied immediately.
*Who are you?*
The response came quickly.
*Someone who realized too late what Monica was doing.*
Another message followed.
*Meet me tomorrow. Alone.*
Jason stared at the screen.
He didn’t trust strangers.
Not anymore.
But he needed answers.
Because there was still one missing piece.
How far had Monica’s plan gone?
And who else was involved?
The next morning, Jason met the person at a small coffee shop across town.
He arrived early.
He checked the room carefully.
A few customers.
A couple sitting near the window.
A man reading a newspaper.
Then the door opened.
A middle-aged man walked in.
Jason recognized him immediately.
Not because they had met.
Because he had seen his name.
Daniel Reeves.
The real estate agent.
Daniel saw Jason and approached slowly.
“You’re Jason Carter.””
Jason didn’t stand.
“Yes.””
Daniel sat down.
“I know you probably don’t want to hear anything from me.””
“You’re right.””
Daniel nodded.
“I deserve that.””
Jason studied him.
“Why are you here?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“Because I made a mistake.””
Jason almost laughed.
“A mistake?””
Daniel lowered his voice.
“I thought I was helping someone.””
“You were helping Monica.””
“Yes.””
“Sell my mother’s house?””
Daniel looked down.
“I didn’t know the whole situation.””
Jason leaned forward.
“You evaluated the property.””
“Yes.””
“You discussed ownership transfer.””
Daniel became quiet.
Jason continued.
“You talked about making my mother believe she couldn’t manage her own home.””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“I know.””
The answer surprised Jason.
“You know?””
“Yes.””
“Then explain.””
Daniel took a breath.
“When Monica contacted me, she said your mother was struggling.””
Jason said nothing.
“She told me your mother wanted to move but was afraid to admit it.””
Jason’s hands tightened.
“She lied.””
“Yes.””
Daniel looked at him.
“But I didn’t realize that at first.””
“When did you realize?””
“When I met your mother.””
Jason looked up.
“When?””
“Before her surgery.””
That stopped him.
“What?””
Daniel nodded.
“She asked me why I had been contacted.””
Jason felt cold.
“She knew?””
“She suspected.””
“What did she say?””
Daniel looked away.
“She told me she had no intention of selling.””
Jason closed his eyes.
Even before everything happened, Evelyn knew.
“She asked me if Monica had told me anything about her memory.””
Jason stared.
“Why?””
“Because she said Monica had started telling people she was forgetting things.””
The room felt heavier.
Daniel continued.
“I should have stopped there.””
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
He looked ashamed.
“I kept thinking it was a family disagreement.””
Jason shook his head.
“It wasn’t.””
“I know that now.””
Jason returned home with one thing on his mind.
A confrontation.
Not an emotional one.
A final one.
But before he could do that, he needed to protect Evelyn.
He called the attorney.
He updated him.
Then he made sure every important document was secured.
Only after that did he feel ready.
When he arrived home, Monica was there.
She was sitting in the living room.
Waiting.
Again.
Jason stopped in the doorway.
“How long have you been back?””
“A few hours.””
“Why?””
She looked at him.
“Because this is my home too.””
Jason almost responded.
But he didn’t.
He simply walked inside.
Monica watched him carefully.
“You look different.””
Jason placed his keys down.
“I know the truth.””
Her face stayed calm.
“What truth?””
He looked at her.
“About Daniel.””
For the first time, Monica lost control.
Only for a second.
But it happened.
Her eyes widened.
Then narrowed.
“Who told you?””
Jason noticed.
Not denial.
Not confusion.
The first question was who told him.
That was enough.
“You knew him.””
She stood.
“Jason.””
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“Not this time.””
She stopped.
“I’m asking questions, and you’re going to answer them.””
Her expression changed.
“You don’t get to interrogate me.””
“I get to ask why you tried to take my mother’s home.””
“I did not.””
“You contacted a real estate agent.””
“To understand options.””
“You created a fake letter.””
“I was preparing.””
“You hid medication.””
“That is not true.””
“You told people she had dementia.””
“I was concerned.””
Jason looked at her.
“You always have an excuse.””
Silence.
Then Monica said something unexpected.
“You want to know what I think?””
Jason waited.
“I think you never cared how hard this was for me.””
Jason stared.
“What?””
“You cared about your mother.””
“Yes.””
“But not me.””
“That’s not true.””
“Isn’t it?””
She stepped closer.
“Your mother needed you. Your daughter needed you. Everyone needed you.””
Her voice cracked.
“And I was always last.””
Jason felt something strange.
Because beneath all the manipulation…
there was pain.
Real pain.
But pain did not excuse cruelty.
“You should have told me.””
“I did.””
“No.””
“You never listened.””
“I would have listened.””
She laughed bitterly.
“Would you?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you invite her here?””
“Because she needed help.””
“And I needed a husband.””
The words hung between them.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Jason said quietly:
“You were unhappy.””
Monica looked away.
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“I thought you would choose her.””
Jason shook his head.
“You never gave me the chance.””
That night, Jason sat with Evelyn.
He told her everything.
Not every detail.
Not every painful thing.
But enough.
She listened quietly.
When he finished, she said:
“I’m sorry.””
Jason looked shocked.
“For what?””
“For your marriage.””
He shook his head.
“Mom.””
“I never wanted to be the reason you lost your family.””
“You weren’t.””
She looked at him.
“I was.””
“No.””
Jason took her hand.
“Someone else made those choices.””
Evelyn looked toward the window.
“I spent so much time trying not to create conflict.””
“I know.””
“Maybe I should have spoken sooner.””
Jason squeezed her hand.
“Maybe I should have listened sooner.””
They sat together.
Two people who had both been silent for too long.
The next morning, Monica made her final move.
Jason found an envelope on the table.
Inside was a legal notice.
A temporary claim.
A request for emergency review.
Jason read it carefully.
Then he understood.
Monica was trying to create the exact situation she had planned.
She was claiming Evelyn was unstable.
Unable to manage her affairs.
Unable to make decisions.
Jason felt anger rising.
But then he noticed something.
A signature.
A witness.
And a name.
Daniel Reeves.
Jason stared.
Daniel had signed the document.
But he had already admitted the truth.
Which meant…
Monica had used him too.
She had created a trail of lies.
But now she had left behind evidence.
Jason picked up his phone.
He called Daniel.
The answer came immediately.
“I was wondering when you’d call.””
Jason’s voice was cold.
“You signed something.””
A pause.
“I know.””
“Why?””
“Because Monica told me it was temporary.””
Jason closed his eyes.
“She lied to you too.””
“Yes.””
“Will you admit it?””
Another pause.
Then:
“Yes.””
Jason finally felt the first piece of victory.
Not revenge.
Not anger.
Truth.
Later that afternoon, Jason, Evelyn, and their attorney gathered the evidence.
Every piece.
Every message.
Every document.
Every timeline.
The plan that Monica thought was invisible was now visible.
The lies connected.
The story changed.
For months, Monica had tried to make everyone believe Evelyn was losing control.
But the evidence showed something else.
Someone had been trying to take control away from her.
As Jason prepared to face Monica one final time, he received one more message.
From Sophie.
*Daddy, Mommy is packing.*
Jason’s heart sank.
Then another message appeared.
*She said if she can’t have the house, nobody will.*
Jason immediately stood.
Because he knew.
Monica was no longer trying to win.
She was trying to destroy.
And this time, the person she might hurt most…
May you like
was not Evelyn.
It was Sophie.
