Chapter 6: The Evidence Nobody Expected

Marcus spent the next two days watching.

Not spying.

Watching.

There was a difference.

He watched the way Nia entered rooms.

She always looked for Vanessa first.

He watched the way she apologized.

Even when nobody accused her.

He watched the way she reacted when Caleb and Ava received praise.

She smiled.

But her eyes changed.

Like she was wondering why she wasn’t enough.

Marcus hated that.

Because he knew exactly where it came from.

Someone had taught his daughter to measure her worth by someone else’s approval.

On Friday evening, Marcus found Nia sitting outside on the back porch.

She was holding an old photo album.

He sat beside her.

“What are you looking at?””

She opened the album.

“Mom.””

Marcus looked at the picture.

Elena.

His first wife.

Nia’s mother.

“She was pretty.””

Nia smiled.

“She was funny too.””

Marcus smiled.

“She was.””

For a while, they sat quietly.

Then Nia asked:

“Do you think Mom Vanessa hates me?””

Marcus looked at her.

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

Because he didn’t want his daughter carrying that pain.

“But I think she has problems that she hasn’t faced.””

Nia nodded slowly.

“She always says I remind her of someone.””

Marcus turned.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“Nia.””

She hesitated.

“Sometimes she says I have the same attitude as her.””

“Her?””

Nia nodded.

“Her stepdaughter.””

Marcus went still.

“Did she tell you about Lily?””

“A little.””

“What did she say?””

Nia looked uncomfortable.

“She said Lily was a bad kid.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

The pattern was undeniable.

“She said Lily ruined her family.””

Nia continued.

“She told me I shouldn’t become like her.””

Marcus felt anger rising.

Not explosive anger.

Something deeper.

Protective.

Cold.

“Nia.””

She looked at him.

“You are not responsible for making adults happy.””

Her eyes filled.

“But what if I’m the reason everyone fights?””

Marcus turned toward her.

“You are not.””

“Yes, I am.””

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“You are a child.””

The sentence made her cry.

Because maybe nobody had said it before.

Maybe she had spent so long trying to be mature because the adults around her failed to protect her.

Marcus pulled her into a hug.

“I’m sorry you felt like you had to carry this.””

For the first time in months, Nia cried without trying to hide it.

Later that night, Marcus searched through old family documents.

He found something unexpected.

A letter.

From Elena.

It was written shortly before she passed away.

Marcus had forgotten about it.

He opened it carefully.

The handwriting was familiar.

Marcus,

If anything ever happens to me, promise me one thing.

Promise me Nia will always know she is loved.

Not because she is perfect.

Not because she succeeds.

Not because she makes life easier.

Just because she is Nia.

Marcus stopped reading.

His eyes blurred.

Because that was exactly what his daughter had lost.

The belief that she was loved simply because she existed.

At that moment, Marcus made a decision.

A decision that would change everything.

The next morning, he would confront Vanessa.

Not as a husband.

Not as someone trying to save a marriage.

But as a father protecting his child.

And Vanessa would finally have to answer for every lie.

Every rule.

Every secret.

But Marcus didn’t know that Vanessa had already made her own move.

Because while he was gathering evidence…

She was preparing to tell everyone that Marcus was the problem.

And she had one person ready to help her.

Someone Marcus trusted completely.
