Chapter 11: The Heir Who Was Never Supposed to Exist

Nobody spoke.

Vanessa looked from Grace to Garrison, and for the first time since I'd met her, she seemed unable to control the room.

Garrison stared at his mother.

“What did you mean?””

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“I meant what I said.””

“You told me there was no second child.””

“I told you not to ask questions.””

“You told me she was dead!””

Grace flinched.

I felt my hands curl into fists.

Vanessa's composure finally cracked.

“Your father insisted the second baby be placed elsewhere. I was never supposed to be involved after that. I followed instructions, and I kept the family from being destroyed.””

“By lying to your own son?”” Victor demanded.

“By doing what you were too weak to do!””

She turned toward him, her eyes bright with years of anger.

“You loved Eleanor so much that you couldn't see what she represented. Your father spent decades building an empire. He wasn't going to let a woman from outside the family determine its future.””

Victor's face went white.

“You had no right.””

“I had every right to protect Garrison.””

“Not by taking my daughters.””

“Your daughters?”” Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You didn't even know they existed!””

The words struck him like a blow.

I saw him struggle to answer, but he couldn't.

Vanessa turned toward Grace.

“You want the truth? Fine. Arthur believed you were the child who should be raised outside the estate.

He said you were the stronger one, the one who might someday become independent of the family. Maya was supposed to stay with Eleanor, but the records were mixed up.””

Grace stared at her.

“Mixed up?””

Vanessa nodded.

“The transfer orders were switched. The people who took you believed you were Maya. The people who were supposed to return Maya to Eleanor believed you were already with your mother.””

My blood ran cold.

“So my mother never knew which baby she had kept?””

“Your mother knew the child she raised,” Vanessa snapped.

“But she didn't know you were one of twins.””

Victor moved closer.

“Are you saying the original custody transfer was a mistake?””

“I am saying the first mistake was believing the two babies could be controlled like pieces on a board.””

Garrison sank onto the sofa.

“Then why didn't you correct it?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Because the moment the mistake was discovered, your grandfather threatened to expose me. He said if I interfered again, I'd lose you. He reminded me that the trust would pass to whichever daughter could be legally verified.””

I stared at her.

“When did you discover the mistake?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Three years later.””

“After my injury?””

She looked at my scar.

“Yes.””

My stomach twisted.

“What did the injury have to do with it?””

“The doctor at the clinic recognized the crescent mark. He realized the girl in Eleanor's care didn't match the child in the original transfer records.””

I felt the room closing in.

“So he told you?””

“He told Arthur. Arthur told me.””

“And what did you do?””

Vanessa looked away.

“I tried to find Grace.””

Grace's face hardened.

“To do what? Bring me home?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

“Did you?”” Grace pressed.

“Did you ever try to bring me home?””

“I had to make sure you wouldn't threaten Garrison's inheritance.””

The admission came out like a whisper.

Grace recoiled.

I stepped toward her.

“Don't listen to her.””

But Grace was staring at Vanessa as though she wanted to memorize every feature of the woman who had known she existed and allowed her to grow up alone.

“You knew I was alive,” Grace said.

“You knew my mother was searching for me. You knew I was out there, wondering why I wasn't wanted.””

Vanessa's face twisted.

“I never said Eleanor wasn't your mother.””

“You didn't have to. You made sure she couldn't find me.””

Victor moved toward the fireplace.

“Enough. This conversation is over.””

“No,” I said.

He turned.

“I need to know what happened to my mother. And I need to know whether Vanessa had anything to do with her death.””

For the first time, Vanessa looked frightened.

Victor noticed.

He stepped closer.

“What does Maya mean?””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Eleanor was ill. I had nothing to do with it.””

“Then why are you afraid?””

“Because you're determined to turn every tragedy into an accusation.””

“Answer the question.””

She stared at him.

“I sent someone to speak to Eleanor six weeks before she died.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

“A private investigator.””

“What did you want?””

“I wanted her to sign a statement confirming that she had no claim against the trust.””

“And if she refused?””

Vanessa looked toward Garrison.

“I was told she had become unstable. I wanted to know whether she still remembered the details of the arrangement.””

I stepped forward.

“My mother was dying. You sent someone to threaten her?””

“I did not know she was dying!””

“You didn't bother to find out.””

Vanessa's lips parted, but nothing came out.

I thought of the hospital bed, Mom's cold fingers around mine, her whispered instructions about twelve iron moons.

She had known she might not survive long enough to tell me the truth.

And Vanessa had sent someone to her bedside to ensure she remained silent.

I felt something harden inside me.

“Who was the investigator?””

“I don't know his name.””

“You hired him!””

“Through an agency!””

Victor seized a folder from the table and threw it down in front of her.

“Then find out. Because if that man threatened Eleanor, and if her death was hastened by anything your people did, I will make sure the authorities know every detail.””

Vanessa's face went white.

Garrison rose.

“Dad, you can't threaten her like that.””

Victor turned.

“You've spent this entire evening defending your mother's behavior. If you have information that could help us understand what happened to Eleanor, now is the time to speak.””

Garrison looked at Grace, then at me.

Finally, he lowered his head.

“I know who the investigator was.””

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

“Garrison, don't.””

He pulled away.

“His name was Daniel Mercer. He used to work for the company's security division. Mother hired him privately after Grandfather died.””

Victor stared at him.

“Where is he now?””

“I don't know. But I can tell you something else.””

Garrison took a folded sheet of paper from his pocket.

“I found this in Mother's office last month. I was going to destroy it because I thought it was another old family secret. Then Marcus mentioned the name Daniel, and I realized it mattered.””

He handed the paper to Victor.

It was a financial transfer record.

A payment of fifty thousand dollars had been made to Daniel Mercer six weeks before Eleanor's death.

The description read: *Final contact — Nevada.*

My knees weakened.

“You paid him to silence my mother.””

Vanessa shook her head frantically.

“No. No, that wasn't what the payment was for.””

“Then what was it for?””

“I wanted him to recover documents she had taken from the family.””

“What documents?””

“The trust papers.””

I stared at her.

“You sent a man to Nevada to take my mother's papers while she was dying?””

Vanessa's eyes filled with angry tears.

“I was trying to protect my son!””

Grace stepped forward.

“You keep saying that as though it makes everything acceptable.””

Vanessa turned on her.

“You have no idea what I've sacrificed. I built my entire life around this family. I spent years ensuring that Garrison would have a future. And now you two appear out of nowhere, and suddenly everything is supposed to belong to you.””

“It's not about what belongs to us,” Grace said.

“It's about what you took from us.””

For a moment, Vanessa looked as though she might strike her again.

But Victor stepped between them.

“Tyler.””

The guard entered immediately.

“Escort Mrs. Rowan to the guest residence. She will remain there until our attorney and the authorities arrive.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“You wouldn't dare.””

“I would.””

“You need me, Victor. You have no idea how many people depend on me to keep this family running.””

“I no longer care.””

Her expression changed.

The smile returned, faint and cruel.

“You should care. Because if you force me out, you'll never learn why your father chose Maya instead of Grace.””

I looked up.

“What?””

Vanessa turned toward me.

“Your grandfather changed the trust after the twins were born. He knew something about you that he never told Victor. Something about the scar. Something about the original birth records.””

Victor's eyes narrowed.

“What are you talking about?””

She shook her head.

“Ask Marcus about the second compartment.””

Then she allowed Tyler to lead her out.

Garrison remained in the sitting room, staring at the floor.

Grace stood motionless.

I reached for her hand.

She took it, but her fingers were cold.

“Do you believe her?”” she whispered.

“No.””

It was the truth.

I didn't believe Vanessa about the scar. I didn't believe she'd suddenly decided to reveal the whole story. And I didn't believe that she had been acting alone.

But I believed one thing.

She was terrified of whatever lay inside the second compartment.

Victor picked up the financial transfer record.

“Tyler will find Daniel Mercer. We'll also contact the attorney who holds my father's records.””

Garrison looked at him.

“Dad, there's something else.””

Victor stopped.

“I found a second bank key in Mother's safe.””

He reached into his pocket and placed a small brass key on the table.

It looked almost identical to the one I'd found beneath Claire's memorial, except this one had the number *1208* stamped into its bow.

I took it.

“Why would she have this?””

Garrison swallowed.

“Because she told me never to let you find the second compartment.””

Grace looked toward the door.

“Then we should go there.””

Victor nodded.

“First thing tomorrow.””

But before any of us could move, the lights went out.

The entire house plunged into darkness.

Rosie began crying somewhere in the corridor.

A shout rang out from the main hall.

Then came the sound of a door slamming.

Tyler's voice burst through the darkness.

“Security breach! East wing!””

I ran toward Rosie's cries.

Victor shouted my name, but I kept moving. Elizabeth was already beside the portable crib, reaching for the baby.

Then a shadow emerged from the corridor.

A man in dark clothing seized Elizabeth's arm.

She screamed.

I lunged toward him, but he shoved me against the wall hard enough to knock the breath from my lungs.

Rosie cried louder.

The man reached for her.

I caught his sleeve.

“Don't touch my sister!””

He struck my hand away.

For one terrifying second, he held Rosie in his arms.

Then Grace appeared behind him and slammed a heavy brass lamp against his shoulder.

He staggered.

Rosie slipped free, and Elizabeth caught her.

Tyler rushed into the room, followed by two guards.

The intruder bolted through the open doorway, disappearing into the darkness.

A crash sounded downstairs.

Then silence.

I sank to the floor, shaking so violently that I couldn't speak.

Elizabeth pressed Rosie into my arms.

Grace knelt beside me.

“Are you hurt?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

But that wasn't true.

I wasn't sure my heart would ever recover from the sight of a stranger holding my baby sister.

Victor arrived a moment later, his face white with fury.

He looked at Rosie, then at me.

“I am so sorry.””

I stared at him.

“They came into your house.””

He had no answer.

“They knew where she slept. They knew which room we were in. They knew the lights would go out.””

Victor turned toward Tyler.

“Lock down every entrance. Nobody leaves this property.””

Tyler nodded and ran.

I held Rosie against my chest, feeling her little heart beating against mine.

Then I looked at Victor.

“Vanessa said my grandfather chose me for the trust because of the scar. What does that mean?””

Victor's eyes were filled with pain.

“I don't know.””

May you like

“Then we're going to find out tonight.””

Because if someone had been willing to enter Rowan Ridge and try to take Rosie, the next attack might not leave us all alive.
