Chapter 6: The Secret Vanessa Saved for the Last Moment

Marcus thought he had discovered the worst.

He was wrong.

Because Vanessa had been waiting.

She knew eventually he would find the boxes.

She knew eventually he would question the money.

She knew eventually Nia’s pain would become impossible to ignore.

So she had prepared.

That evening, Vanessa walked into the living room holding a folder.

Marcus looked up.

“What is that?””

She placed it on the table.

“Proof.””

Marcus didn’t touch it.

“Of what?””

“That I’m not the only person who made mistakes.””

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

Marcus opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

School reports.

Emails.

Notes.

And one statement that immediately caught his attention.

A report about Nia’s behavior.

Marcus looked confused.

“What is this?””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“You want the truth?””

“Yes.””

“She’s been difficult for years.””

Marcus stared at her.

“What?””

“She’s angry. She pushes people away. She refuses to accept me.””

Marcus flipped through the papers.

“These are from when she was nine.””

“Yes.””

“She was nine.””

Vanessa shrugged.

“She was old enough to understand respect.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You’re blaming a grieving child.””

“I’m explaining what happened.””

“No.””

Marcus put the folder down.

“You’re explaining why you decided she deserved less.””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

Then she said the sentence Marcus never expected.

“Maybe you should ask yourself why her own mother’s family didn’t want her.””

The room became completely silent.

Marcus felt his entire body tense.

“What did you say?””

Vanessa looked almost relieved.

Finally.

The secret she had kept.

The weapon she believed would change everything.

“You don’t know everything about Nia’s mother.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Explain.””

Vanessa smiled faintly.

“She wasn’t as perfect as you think.””

Marcus’s voice dropped.

“Careful.””

“I’m serious.””

Vanessa opened another document.

“She had problems.””

Marcus stared at the papers.

“What problems?””

“She was struggling before she died.””

Marcus felt anger rising.

“And?””

“And maybe Nia inherited some of that.””

The moment the words left her mouth, Marcus knew.

This was different.

This wasn’t a defense.

This was an attack.

On his daughter.

On a woman who couldn’t defend herself.

On a child who had already lost enough.

“You’re done.””

Vanessa blinked.

“What?””

“You’re done using my daughter’s pain as a reason to hurt her.””

She looked shocked.

“You’re choosing her over me?””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

He looked toward the stairs where Nia was standing quietly.

“I’m choosing what is right.””

Nia had heard everything.

Again.

But this time, something was different.

She wasn’t shrinking.

She wasn’t apologizing.

She wasn’t pretending.

Marcus walked toward her.

“Nia.””

She looked at him.

“Did Mom really have problems?””

Marcus knelt down.

“Everyone has problems.””

“Even her?””

“Yes.””

Nia looked down.

“Was she a bad person?””

Marcus answered immediately.

“No.””

The certainty in his voice mattered.

“She loved you.””

Nia nodded.

That was all she needed.

Behind them, Vanessa realized something.

The secret had failed.

The story she created had failed.

Because Marcus no longer saw Nia as a problem to solve.

He saw her as his daughter.

And for the first time in years, Nia saw herself the same way.

But Vanessa was not finished.

Because the folder she brought into the room contained one more document.

One she had not shown them.

One that could change everything.

A document that connected Nia’s mother’s past, Marcus’s money, and the reason Vanessa had been desperate to keep control of the family.

And when Marcus discovered it, he would finally understand why Vanessa had never wanted Nia to know the truth. :::
