Chapter 14: The Choice My Father Made
My father took the drive.
But he didn't open it.
Not immediately.
Instead, he sat beside me.
For a long time, neither of us spoke.
Finally, I asked,
"What else don't I know?""
His silence answered first.
Then he said,
"The night your mother disappeared, I made a mistake.""
I listened.
"I thought Anthony was my enemy.""
"But he wasn't?""
"He was.""
My father paused.
"But I underestimated him.""
I touched my cane.
"What mistake?""
He took a deep breath.
"I believed protecting you meant controlling everything around you.""
I didn't understand.
"After your mother died, I became obsessed with keeping you safe.""
"That's not a mistake.""
"It became one.""
His voice cracked.
"I pushed away everyone who reminded me of Isabella.""
"Why?""
"Because every person who loved her reminded me that I failed her.""
I didn't speak.
"I changed.""
He looked at me.
"But I changed too late.""
A tear moved down his face.
I had never seen my father cry.
Not once.
"I spent years chasing enemies outside our home.""
He looked at the drive.
"And I never looked closely enough at the people standing beside me.""
The drive was opened.
Inside were thousands of files.
Names.
Payments.
Messages.
Everything.
Elena began organizing the information.
Then she stopped.
"Vincent.""
My father looked up.
"What?""
She turned the laptop toward him.
"This message.""
He read it.
I heard his breathing change.
"What does it say?""
Elena hesitated.
"Anthony planned everything.""
My father looked closer.
"The Bellmont group. The target list. Caroline's involvement.""
She continued.
"He wanted Emily to enter Bellmont.""
My heart dropped.
"Why?""
Elena scrolled.
Then she found the answer.
"Because he wanted Vincent Moretti to destroy himself.""
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
My father stared at the screen.
"He wanted me to return to who I used to be.""
The room became quiet.
"He wanted me angry.""
Elena nodded.
"He expected you to retaliate.""
I understood.
If my father had reacted with violence, Anthony would win.
Everyone would see Vincent Moretti as the monster they expected.
And the truth would disappear.
My father closed the laptop.
"Where is Anthony?""
Marco answered from the corner.
"I can help you find him.""
Everyone looked at him.
My father didn't trust him.
Neither did I.
"Why help now?""
Marco looked tired.
"Because Isabella was right.""
My father said nothing.
"She always believed there was still something good inside you.""
A pause.
"And I spent twenty years proving her wrong.""
For the first time, Marco sounded human.
Not a villain.
Not a threat.
Just a broken man.
The next morning, we found Anthony.
Not through threats.
Not through fear.
Through evidence.
His own messages.
His own files.
His own mistakes.
When police arrived, Anthony was waiting.
Almost like he knew.
He looked at my father.
"You became soft.""
My father stood still.
"No.""
Anthony smiled.
"You did.""
My father looked at me.
Then answered.
"I became someone my daughter could be proud of.""
Anthony's expression changed.
Because he understood.
The old Vincent Moretti would have chosen revenge.
This one chose the truth.
As Anthony was taken away, he shouted,
"You think this ends everything?""
My father didn't respond.
Anthony laughed.
"Ask your daughter what Isabella left behind.""
I froze.
"What?""
Anthony smiled.
"Your mother didn't just leave a message for Vincent.""
May you like
The car door closed.
"She left one for Emily.""
