Chapter 13: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
My father stared at the photograph as though the woman inside it had just walked out of a grave.
Vanessa Cole.
His first wife.
The woman he had believed was dead for fifteen years.
My mother slowly sat down.
"No," she whispered.
"That can't be her.""
Detective Bell placed the photograph on the hospital table.
"Her legal name is Vanessa Cole. She's currently listed as the majority owner of HarborPoint Holdings.""
My father shook his head.
"Vanessa died in a boating accident.""
"That's what the records say.""
Henry pushed himself higher against his pillow.
"She didn't die.""
My father turned toward him.
"You knew?""
Henry nodded weakly.
"I suspected it for years. I never had proof.""
My mother looked between them.
"Why would Vanessa want our property?""
Henry closed his eyes.
"Because she knows what's underneath it.""
My father gripped the edge of the table.
"Explain.""
Henry took a breath.
"Vanessa worked for Atlantic Meridian before you married her. She was introduced to you as an administrative consultant. But she was actually working for Thomas Reynolds.""
My father stared at the photograph.
"She told me she had never heard of Atlantic Meridian.""
"She lied.""
Henry explained that Vanessa had been involved in the company's financial operations.
She helped move money between shell companies and prepare documents for questionable property transactions.
When my father discovered irregularities years later, Vanessa had already disappeared.
The boating accident had been reported near the northern harbor.
Her vehicle was found.
A damaged boat was recovered.
But no body was ever located.
My father had spent months searching.
Eventually, the authorities declared her presumed dead.
He had never spoken about her again.
"Why would she come back now?"" my mother asked.
Henry looked at the photograph.
"Because HarborPoint has been trying to purchase the Cole property for one reason. The original archive contains proof that Thomas Reynolds and Vanessa used fraudulent ownership documents to steal several waterfront properties.""
My father slowly sat down.
"Then why target me personally?""
"Because your father left you the property, and you refused to sell it.""
My mother looked at Henry.
"What does Vanessa want from the archive?""
Henry reached for the folder.
"The original partnership agreement.""
He explained that Samuel Cole had retained a controlling interest in the original company before it collapsed.
The agreement contained a clause protecting several waterfront properties from unauthorized transfers.
If the original documents were recovered, the fraudulent transactions could be challenged.
HarborPoint would lose more than our seafood market.
It could lose its entire development project.
My father looked at Detective Bell.
"Where is Vanessa now?""
"We believe she's staying in a private residence outside the city. We have an address.""
"Then arrest her.""
"We're working on it. But we need stronger evidence connecting her directly to the fraudulent documents.""
Henry slowly lifted the remaining page from beneath his blanket.
"This is what you need.""
It was a handwritten statement from Samuel.
My grandfather had recorded the details of the original fraud.
He named Thomas Reynolds, Vanessa Cole, Richard Vale, and several other individuals.
At the bottom was a statement confirming that Henry had witnessed the original ownership agreement.
Detective Bell examined it.
"This could be significant.""
Henry nodded.
"There's more.""
He pointed to a paragraph near the end.
"Samuel knew Vanessa was involved. He discovered it shortly before she disappeared.""
My father looked confused.
"Why didn't he tell me?""
"Because he thought she would use you to get access to the original property documents.""
My father looked down.
For fifteen years, he had believed he had lost a woman he once loved.
Now he was discovering that she had been part of a conspiracy against his family.
My mother reached for his hand.
"Owen, none of this was your fault.""
He didn't respond.
Then I asked the question nobody else seemed willing to ask.
"If Vanessa is alive, why hasn't she come after us before?""
Henry looked at me.
"Because she was waiting.""
"For what?""
"For the development project to become valuable enough that the old records could destroy everything.""
Detective Bell stood.
"I'm going to request an emergency warrant.""
He collected the documents and left the room.
My father remained beside the window.
My mother approached him.
"You need to tell me something.""
He turned.
"What?""
"When Vanessa disappeared, did you know she was involved in the company?""
He shook his head.
"No.""
"Did you ever suspect her?""
He hesitated.
My mother noticed.
"Owen?""
He lowered his eyes.
"One week before the accident, she asked me to bring home the original property deed.""
My mother froze.
"Why?""
"She said she wanted to verify something for her employer. I refused.""
"Did you tell Samuel?""
"Yes.""
My mother stepped away.
"And you never told me?""
"I thought it was unrelated.""
Henry suddenly spoke.
"It wasn't.""
My father looked at him.
Henry continued.
"Vanessa wasn't trying to get the deed for herself. She was trying to find the hidden ownership clause.""
My father covered his face.
For several seconds, the hospital room was silent.
Then my phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
A message appeared.
Your family should stop digging. You have no idea what Vanessa is capable of.
A second message arrived.
It contained a photograph of my parents' house.
Taken from across the street.
My mother looked at it.
"Detective Bell.""
My father immediately called him.
But before he could connect, another message appeared.
This time, it contained a photograph of the hospital corridor.
Taken less than a minute earlier.
Someone was watching us.
Henry grabbed my father's wrist.
"She's already here.""
My father turned toward the door.
A woman stood behind the glass.
Blonde hair.
Black coat.
Silver bracelet.
Vanessa.
She smiled.
Then she raised one hand and knocked gently on the hospital room door.
My father whispered:
"You're supposed to be dead.""
Vanessa opened the door.
"Hello, Owen.""
She looked at my mother.
Then at Henry.
Finally, her eyes settled on me.
"Well," she said softly, "this family reunion is long overdue.""
And before anyone could stop her, she placed a document on the table.
It was an official court order.
An emergency motion requesting immediate control of Cole Harbor Seafood.
At the bottom was a judge's signature.
The hearing was scheduled for the following morning.
Vanessa smiled.
"You have until nine o'clock to surrender the property.""
May you like
Then she looked at my father.
"Or you'll lose everything your father spent his life protecting.""
