Chapter 15: The Woman Who Built the Empire

The investigators opened the black metal case shortly before sunset.

Inside were computer drives, handwritten ledgers, medical authorization forms, and a stack of photographs.

But the most important item was a passport.

It belonged to Evelyn Mercer.

The photograph showed a woman in her early sixties.

Her name had been changed to Evelyn Carter.

The passport had been issued six years earlier.

Greg stared at it.

"She's alive.""

Caleb examined the documents.

"Looks like she disappeared after the investigation began.""

Officer Brooks picked up a handwritten ledger.

"According to these records, Evelyn controlled the financial accounts.""

Greg nodded.

"She handled everything. Franklin was the public face. Evelyn managed the money.""

I looked at my son.

"How well did you know her?""

"She used to come to our house every Sunday. She was always nice to me.""

I remembered those dinners.

Evelyn bringing homemade pies.

Robert helping her carry groceries.

The two of them laughing in the kitchen.

She had been one of my closest friends.

I had even asked her to be Greg's godmother.

The thought made me feel sick.

"Did she know about Robert's investigation?""

Greg nodded.

"She knew before Franklin did.""

Caleb turned a page.

"There's something here about a private medical company.""

He read the name aloud.

"Mercer Health Solutions.""

Abigail had mentioned the company earlier.

It was the organization that had handled the suspicious veterans' treatments.

Officer Brooks photographed the documents.

"These records will be sent to the financial crimes unit. We need to locate Evelyn immediately.""

Then Greg noticed a small envelope inside the case.

He opened it.

His face changed.

"What's wrong?"" I asked.

He handed me the letter.

It was addressed to Robert.

The handwriting was Evelyn's.

**Robert, I know what Franklin has done. I also know what you plan to do. If you go to the authorities, you will destroy more than his business.

You will destroy your family. Please stop before it's too late.**

Beneath the message was a second sentence.

*You still don't know the truth about Greg.*

I looked up.

"What truth?""

Greg's face had gone pale.

"Mom, there's something I haven't told you.""

I stared at him.

"Not another secret.""

He shook his head.

"I didn't know until recently.""

"Tell me.""

He took a deep breath.

"Franklin isn't my biological father.""

I blinked.

"But you said—"

"I know what he told me. But I had a DNA test done three years ago.""

My heart began pounding.

"Why?""

"Because my oldest daughter needed a medical donor. The results showed that I wasn't genetically related to Franklin.""

Caleb frowned.

"That doesn't prove who your father is.""

Greg nodded.

"I know. But I found another document in Franklin's office.""

He reached into his jacket and removed a photocopy.

It was a laboratory report.

The results identified Robert Whitmore as Greg's biological father.

I stared at the paper.

"Robert?""

Greg nodded.

"Yes.""

I began crying.

"Then why did Franklin tell you he was your father?""

Greg's voice cracked.

"Because he wanted me to believe Dad had stolen my life. He told me you had been unfaithful and that Robert had hidden the truth from me.""

I sat down.

All these years, Franklin had manipulated my son by convincing him that Robert wasn't his real father.

He had used that lie to turn Greg against the man who had raised him.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Greg lowered his head.

"I was ashamed.""

I looked at him.

"Of what?""

"Of believing him.""

For a moment, I wanted to embrace my son.

Then I remembered the hospital recording.

The medication.

The stolen money.

My husband's final hours.

I couldn't erase those things because Greg had finally admitted the truth.

"Your father was Robert," I said quietly.

"Not because of a laboratory report. Because he chose you every day.""

Greg wiped his eyes.

"I know.""

Officer Brooks interrupted.

"We have another problem.""

He held up a photograph from the case.

It showed Evelyn standing outside a bank in Dallas.

The date was only three days old.

"She's active," he said.

"And she appears to be moving money.""

Caleb examined the photograph.

"Where?""

Officer Brooks pointed to the background.

A sign identified the building.

"First National Bank.""

My stomach tightened.

"Was she trying to access Robert's account?""

"Possibly.""

The officer made a call.

Then another.

His expression grew increasingly serious.

"There's an account linked to the veterans' trust that has been receiving unauthorized transfers.""

I looked at the $8.6 million statement.

"How much has been taken?""

He checked his phone.

"Approximately $1.2 million.""

Greg stood.

"That's impossible. Dad's account was hidden.""

Caleb shook his head.

"Someone knew about the trust.""

Officer Brooks turned toward him.

"Can you think of anyone who had access to the ranch?""

Greg nodded slowly.

"Franklin. Evelyn. And me.""

I looked at my son.

"Did you tell them?""

"No.""

"Are you certain?""

He stared at me.

"Yes.""

Then his phone rang.

The caller ID displayed a name.

Evelyn Mercer.

Greg looked at me.

I nodded.

"Put it on speaker.""

He answered.

"Hello?""

A woman's familiar voice filled the underground room.

"Gregory, darling. I've been trying to reach you.""

Greg's face tightened.

"Where are you?""

Evelyn laughed softly.

"Somewhere your father would have hated.""

"What do you want?""

"I want you to stop making a terrible mistake.""

Greg glanced toward Officer Brooks.

Evelyn continued.

"Your mother has been filling your head with stories. That old biker is using her. And Abigail is simply looking for money.""

Abigail's name made me straighten.

"Don't speak about her," I said.

There was a pause.

Then Evelyn recognized my voice.

"Eleanor.""

"Hello, Evelyn.""

She sighed.

"I always liked you.""

"You helped kill my husband.""

Silence.

Then she laughed.

"Oh, sweetheart. Robert killed himself the moment he decided to become a hero.""

Caleb stepped closer to the phone.

"Where's Patricia?""

Evelyn ignored him.

"Gregory, I need you to listen. Franklin has been trying to protect you for years. You owe him everything.""

Greg's voice was shaking.

"I owe him nothing.""

"Don't be foolish. I have the original medical records. I have the financial transfers. I have the documents proving you signed the authorizations.""

"Then release them.""

Evelyn chuckled.

"You really are Robert's son.""

Greg looked at me.

Then he spoke clearly.

"Yes. I am.""

Evelyn's tone changed.

"Listen to me carefully. I know where your daughter goes to school.""

Greg went rigid.

"Don't you dare.""

"I know where your wife works. I know where your mother is staying. And I know exactly how much the people you love can lose.""

Officer Brooks immediately signaled for the call to be traced.

Evelyn continued.

"Meet me tomorrow at the old Mercer estate. Come alone. Bring the key from the ranch. If you don't, I'll make sure everyone discovers what you did to Robert.""

Greg's face twisted.

"I didn't kill him.""

Evelyn answered softly.

"No, darling. You only made it possible.""

The call ended.

For several seconds, the only sound was the generator humming in the corner.

Then Caleb turned toward Officer Brooks.

"We know where she wants him.""

The officer nodded.

"We'll arrange surveillance. Nobody goes there alone.""

I looked at Greg.

He was staring at the floor.

"Mom," he whispered, "she knows about my children.""

I reached for his hand.

"Then we make sure she never gets near them.""

Officer Brooks began organizing the operation.

But before we left the ranch, Abigail called.

Her voice was trembling.

"Eleanor, I just spoke with Victoria.""

"How is she?""

"She's found something in Franklin's private files.""

"What?""

Abigail took a shaky breath.

"She found the original adoption records. But there's something else.""

I waited.

"Franklin didn't adopt Victoria because he wanted a child.""

My stomach tightened.

"Why, then?""

Abigail's voice dropped.

"Because Victoria wasn't the only baby he took.""

I froze.

"What do you mean?""

"There are records of seven other newborns transferred through the same private agency. Seven children whose identities were changed.""

Caleb stopped moving.

Abigail continued.

"And one of those children was registered under a name I recognize.""

"What name?""

A long silence.

Then she answered.

"Gregory Whitmore.""

I looked at my son.

He was standing beside the photograph of Robert.

His face had gone completely white.

Abigail whispered the final words.

"Eleanor, I don't think the baby who was switched at St. Matthew's was Victoria.""

She paused.

"I think someone switched you and Greg, too.""

May you like

And suddenly, the question wasn't whether Greg was Robert's biological son.

It was whether the woman who had raised him had ever been given the child she gave birth to at all.
