Chapter 11: The Woman Who Wanted My Father's Money

The investigator didn't tell us everything.

She said Rachel had been located during a search connected to the estate investigation. She also confirmed that Michael Graves had agreed to meet with authorities.

But there was a problem.

Rachel was claiming that she had been acting on my father's instructions.

And she had documents to support it.

The following morning, Mom and I went to Richard's office.

Daniel brought Ethan.

Claire had agreed to provide a formal statement, but she was being kept away from the other witnesses while the investigation continued.

I hadn't spoken to her since the photograph appeared.

I wasn't sure I ever wanted to again.

Richard greeted us with a thick folder.

"I've received the latest estate documents.""

He placed them on the desk.

"Robert's final will is valid. The court has not revoked it, and the original remains secured.""

Mom looked at him.

"What did he leave?""

Richard opened the folder.

"The house remains entirely yours, Margaret. Your husband made that very clear.""

Mom nodded.

"And the trust?""

"Robert created two separate trusts.""

He pointed to the first document.

"One was established for Emma. The other was established for Emily.""

I stared at him.

"Me?""

Richard nodded.

"Your father believed you would eventually need to know what happened to his estate. He also wanted to make sure Emma had someone trustworthy who could help her access the records if necessary.""

I felt my eyes sting.

"Why didn't he tell me?""

"Because he was afraid the information would put you in danger while the financial investigation was ongoing.""

Mom looked at the paperwork.

"What did Claire receive?""

Richard hesitated.

"Your father left her a personal inheritance, but it was substantially smaller than she expected.""

I frowned.

"How much?""

"Fifty thousand dollars.""

Daniel lowered his head.

"She owed nearly four hundred thousand.""

Richard nodded.

"Robert knew about the debt. He intended to help her negotiate a repayment plan, but he refused to use Margaret's home or Emma's trust to cover it.""

Mom closed her eyes.

"He could have told me.""

Richard gently answered.

"Robert believed he could resolve the matter before it became a family crisis.""

I looked at the second trust document.

"What's the connection between my trust and Rachel?""

Richard removed another paper.

"Rachel was named as an emergency custodian of certain records. She was never a beneficiary.""

"So she lied?""

"She appears to have believed that Robert had promised her a larger inheritance. But the documents show otherwise.""

Mom stared at him.

"Then why did she go to the hospital?""

Richard sighed.

"That's what we need to establish.""

At that moment, his receptionist called.

"Mr. Harrison, the investigator is here.""

A few seconds later, two officers entered.

Behind them walked a woman with dark hair.

Rachel.

She looked to be in her late thirties. Her coat was expensive, her shoes polished, and her expression carefully controlled.

When she saw Mom, she stopped.

"Margaret.""

Mom stood.

"Do I know you?""

Rachel swallowed.

"No. Not properly.""

"Then why did you use my name at the hospital?""

Rachel looked toward the officers.

"I was trying to help Robert.""

I stepped forward.

"By pretending to be my mother?""

She looked at me.

"Your father asked me to.""

"Why?""

"Because he wanted to speak to someone he trusted.""

Mom's face hardened.

"He had me. He had his wife.""

Rachel shook her head.

"He didn't want you involved.""

Mom stared at her.

"Why?""

Rachel lowered her voice.

"Because Claire was threatening him.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Claire?""

Rachel nodded.

"She wanted him to sign over the house. She told him she had already arranged everything.""

Richard interrupted.

"Then why did you enter his medical file?""

Rachel looked uncomfortable.

"I didn't.""

The investigator removed a photograph.

"Then explain this.""

Rachel glanced at it.

Her expression changed.

"That isn't me.""

I stared.

"What?""

"The woman in that photograph looks like me, but it isn't me.""

The investigator placed another photograph beside it.

This one showed Rachel entering the hospital lobby.

The timestamp was 11:48 p.m.

Rachel looked at it.

Then at Mom.

"That is me.""

The investigator nodded.

"So you were there.""

"Yes.""

"Did you enter Robert Bennett's room?""

Rachel hesitated.

"Yes.""

"Did you administer medication?""

"No.""

"Did you sign any documents?""

"No.""

Richard leaned forward.

"Why were you there?""

Rachel looked at Mom.

"Robert asked me to bring him something.""

"What?""

"A copy of the original trust agreement.""

Mom's face changed.

"Why?""

"Because he believed Claire had stolen the original.""

I felt a chill.

"Did you give it to him?""

Rachel nodded.

"Yes.""

"And then?""

"He asked me to hide it somewhere safe.""

"Where?""

Rachel looked at me.

"In the grandfather clock.""

I almost stood.

"The clock?""

She nodded.

"But Claire found it before I could return.""

Richard stared at her.

"Then where is the original agreement now?""

Rachel shook her head.

"I don't know.""

The investigator removed a final photograph.

This one showed the hospital corridor at 12:03 a.m.

The same timestamp as the recording we had found.

A man stood outside Dad's room.

Michael Graves.

Rachel looked away.

"He came after me.""

"What did he want?"" I asked.

Rachel swallowed.

"The documents.""

"Did he get them?""

She nodded.

Mom made a small sound.

"Then why did he tell Claire the rest was between them?""

Rachel looked at her.

"Because he believed Robert had already died.""

The room went silent.

I leaned forward.

"Did Dad die before or after Michael arrived?""

Rachel closed her eyes.

"I don't know.""

The investigator asked her to continue.

Rachel took a breath.

"When I entered the room, Robert was awake. He was weak, but he could speak. He told me he was afraid Claire would destroy the trust documents.""

Mom was crying now.

"He was awake?""

Rachel nodded.

"He asked about Emily. He said he wanted her to know the truth.""

I gripped the edge of Richard's desk.

"What happened next?""

"Michael arrived. He told me I had no authority to be there. We argued. He said the documents belonged to Claire.""

"And you left?""

Rachel nodded.

"I was afraid. I had already been threatened once.""

The investigator looked at her.

"By whom?""

Rachel didn't answer.

Richard did.

"Michael Graves.""

Rachel nodded.

"He said if I interfered, he would make sure my own financial records became part of the investigation.""

I looked at the investigator.

"Can we get the hospital footage?""

"That is already being reviewed.""

Rachel reached into her handbag.

"I have something else.""

She removed a small USB drive.

"Robert gave me this before he died.""

I stared at it.

"What is it?""

"A recording.""

The investigator took it carefully.

"Have you listened to it?""

Rachel shook her head.

"No. Robert told me not to open it unless Margaret found the ring.""

Mom covered her mouth.

"Then why didn't you bring it sooner?""

Rachel looked down.

"Because Claire contacted me first. She told me your father had left instructions that I should receive everything.""

"Everything?"" I repeated.

Rachel nodded.

"She said the will had been changed in my favor.""

Richard frowned.

"That was false.""

"I know that now.""

The investigator placed the USB drive into an evidence bag.

"We'll have it examined.""

Rachel stood.

Before leaving, she looked at Mom.

"I'm sorry. I know Robert loved you.""

Mom didn't answer.

Rachel turned toward me.

"Your father asked me to tell you something.""

I stepped closer.

"What?""

"He said the person who betrayed him wasn't the person he feared most.""

I frowned.

"Who did he fear?""

Rachel looked toward the door.

"Michael Graves.""

Then she left with the officers.

I sat down slowly.

Because the investigation had now uncovered something much bigger than a stolen ring or a forged signature.

A lawyer had been involved in manipulating an elderly man's estate, altering medical records, and concealing documents.

But one question remained.

Why would Michael Graves risk so much for Claire?

Richard looked at the USB drive's evidence receipt.

Then he said:

"Because I don't believe Claire was the person he was really protecting.""

I stared at him.

"What do you mean?""

Richard opened a final folder.

Inside was a bank statement.

The account holder's name wasn't Claire.

It was Michael Graves.

And three years earlier, the account had received a transfer of $275,000 from an account belonging to my father.

Mom whispered:

"Robert never made a payment like that.""

Richard nodded.

"No. He didn't.""

He turned the statement around.

The transfer had been authorized electronically.

The verification code had been sent to a phone number registered to someone in our family.

I looked at the final four digits.

May you like

I recognized them immediately.

They belonged to my phone.
