Chapter 8: My Sister's Confession
Vanessa didn't look surprised to see us.
She looked angry.
“Dad, give me the flash drive.””
Dad closed his fist around it.
“No.””
“It's not yours.””
“Neither was the education fund.””
Her expression hardened.
“Can we not do this here?””
Richard stepped away from his desk.
“Vanessa, you shouldn't have come back.””
She turned toward him.
“You promised you wouldn't tell him.””
Richard shook his head.
“I promised Michael I would protect his daughters. I've failed at that for eleven years.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Michael is dead. What exactly are you protecting now?””
Dad moved between them.
“Don't speak about my brother like that.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You weren't there.””
Dad's eyes narrowed.
“Neither were you supposed to be.””
Her face went white.
For the first time, she looked genuinely shaken.
I stepped closer.
“Vanessa, why were you in Uncle Michael's truck?””
She looked at me.
“Because Mom let me go with him.””
“Why?””
“Because I wanted to see him.””
“Why didn't Mom tell Dad?””
Vanessa looked away.
Richard answered.
“Because Michael had discovered something Linda didn't want Daniel to know.””
Dad held up the photograph.
“What was it?””
Vanessa suddenly snatched it from his hand.
“Stop!””
She clutched the photograph against her chest.
“Just stop digging!””
Dad stared at her.
“You're going to explain everything.””
“No, I'm not.””
“Vanessa.””
“I said no!””
Her voice echoed through the office.
Then she turned toward me.
“You don't understand what Mom went through.””
I shook my head.
“Then explain it.””
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“Michael was going to ruin her life.””
“How?””
“He found the money transfers.””
“And?””
“He threatened to tell Dad.””
Dad stepped forward.
“Was he lying?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
The admission hung between us.
Dad looked as if someone had punched him.
“So your mother stole from his business?””
“She borrowed it.””
“Forty-seven thousand dollars?””
“She was going to pay it back.””
“With what?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
Richard spoke quietly.
“Michael wanted the money returned. He also wanted Linda to explain why she had been using the business account.””
Dad looked at his daughter.
“What happened that night?””
Vanessa lowered the photograph.
“I was in the truck.””
“I know.””
“Michael was angry.””
“About the money?””
She nodded.
“He kept calling Mom. He told her he wanted to talk before he went to the police.””
Dad's voice softened.
“Was he driving dangerously?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No. He was crying.””
I felt my stomach twist.
Uncle Michael?
Crying?
Vanessa continued.
“He told me he was sorry. He said he should have protected me from grown-up problems.””
“Why would he say that?””
She looked at Richard.
“Because he knew Mom had been using me.””
Dad frowned.
“What?””
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
“Mom told Michael I needed money for school. She said she was saving it for me. But some of it went to her business.””
Richard nodded slowly.
“That matches the records.””
Dad stared at Vanessa.
“Did you know about the stolen money?””
“I was a child!””
“I didn't say you weren't.””
Vanessa's voice cracked.
“Mom told me if Michael exposed her, we'd lose everything. She said Dad would leave, Grandma and Grandpa would hate us, and I'd end up alone.””
I looked at her.
“So you believed her?””
Vanessa nodded.
“She made me promise not to tell.””
Dad sat down heavily.
“What happened after the crash?””
Vanessa's face went blank.
“I remember the rain. The truck went sideways. Michael tried to turn the wheel.””
She swallowed.
“I remember the sound.””
I thought of the scissors.
Snip.
Snip.
Snip.
The way certain sounds stayed in your head long after the moment had passed.
Vanessa continued.
“When the truck stopped, Michael was breathing. I was screaming. He told me to get out.””
Dad's eyes filled.
“What did he say?””
“He told me to find help.””
“Did you?””
Vanessa nodded.
“I ran toward the road. A woman stopped her car.””
Richard looked down.
“Michael called Linda before the ambulance arrived.””
Dad turned sharply.
“What did he say to her?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I heard him.””
“Tell me.””
“He said, ‘You have to tell Daniel the truth.’”
Dad covered his mouth.
Vanessa's voice dropped.
“Then Mom arrived.””
The room went silent.
“She got there before the ambulance?”” I asked.
Vanessa nodded.
“She told me to stay with her. She took my jacket off because it had blood on it.””
Dad stared at her.
“What blood?””
“Michael's. I had held his hand.””
She began crying.
“Mom said the police didn't need to know I had heard anything. She said I was confused and scared.””
Dad's voice trembled.
“Did she speak to Michael?””
Vanessa nodded.
“She leaned into the truck.””
“What did he say?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“He asked her to tell you about the money.””
“And?””
“She told him to stop talking.””
Dad's face crumpled.
“What?””
Vanessa continued.
“He kept asking her. Then he said something about a recording. Mom got angry.””
Richard stepped forward.
“What recording?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I don't know.””
“You must have heard something.””
She shook her head.
“I was a child.””
Dad leaned forward.
“Vanessa, what happened next?””
Her lips trembled.
“Michael stopped talking.””
Nobody moved.
The silence was unbearable.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“Mom told the paramedics he had already stopped breathing when she arrived.””
Dad stared at her.
“Did you hear that?””
“I was standing beside her.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
Vanessa began sobbing.
“Because Mom said you'd never forgive me if you knew I had been there.””
Dad reached toward her.
She stepped backward.
“And because I was scared.””
He lowered his hand.
For a few seconds, he simply looked at her.
Then he asked:
“Why are you still protecting her?””
Vanessa wiped her face.
“Because she told me what would happen if I didn't.””
“What?””
Vanessa looked at me.
Then she said something that made my skin crawl.
“She told me that if Dad ever found out the truth, we'd both lose everything. She said you would take Maya's side, and I'd have nowhere to go.””
I stared at her.
“That's why you tried to cancel my scholarship?””
Vanessa looked down.
“I wasn't trying to hurt you.””
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
“You used my email. You forged my signature. You tried to take the opportunity I spent years working toward.””
“I needed the scholarship.””
“You already had your own opportunities!””
“Not like yours!””
I stepped closer.
“Then work for them. Don't steal mine.””
Vanessa's expression twisted.
“You don't understand. Mom promised me that if we got your scholarship transferred, I could finally start over.””
I felt sick.
“Why would a university transfer my scholarship to you?””
“Mom said she had a plan.””
Dad looked at her.
“What plan?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Then Richard spoke.
“Linda was going to claim Maya had voluntarily withdrawn because of a family emergency. The agreement would make Vanessa the replacement candidate.””
Dad looked at him.
“That's impossible.””
“Not if they submitted enough forged documentation to make the university believe Maya had agreed.””
I stared at Vanessa.
“You were going to take my name, my scholarship, and my future?””
She started crying again.
“I thought you could apply somewhere else.””
I laughed once.
It was the kind of laugh that came when something hurt too much to process.
“Somewhere else?””
I looked at her.
“I worked six months for a dress, Vanessa. I worked four years for that scholarship. You thought I could just start over?””
She didn't answer.
Dad stood.
“Give Richard the photograph.””
Vanessa held it tighter.
“No.””
“Give it to him.””
“It's mine.””
Richard looked at her.
“Michael left it with me.””
Vanessa finally placed it on the desk.
Dad picked up the flash drive.
“We're taking this to the police.””
Vanessa's face changed.
“Dad, please.””
He looked at her.
“I don't know what happened eleven years ago. But I know someone has been lying about it.””
He turned toward the door.
Then Vanessa grabbed his arm.
“Wait.””
Dad stopped.
She looked at him through tears.
“There's something else.””
“What?””
Vanessa glanced at Richard.
“Mom didn't just come to the accident.””
She swallowed.
“She came back the next morning.””
Dad frowned.
“Why?””
Vanessa's voice dropped.
“To get something Michael had hidden in the truck.””
Richard stepped forward.
“What?””
Vanessa looked directly at him.
“The original recording.””
May you like
Then she pointed at the flash drive in Dad's hand.
“And that isn't the only copy.””
