Chapter 12: The Person Behind the Plan

The photograph was grainy.

Security footage.

Not high quality.

But clear enough.

Jason was standing near my ramp.

The same day he removed it.

The same morning he claimed he had just discovered a property problem.

But he wasn’t alone.

A second person stood near the fence.

Watching.

I zoomed in.

I couldn’t recognize the face.

But I recognized something else.

The person was holding a folder.

A folder.

Why?

I called the city investigator immediately.

“You sent me the photo,” I said.

“Yes.””

“Who is the other person?””

“That’s what we’re trying to determine.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

There was a pause.

“Because that person may have information about how Jason obtained the incorrect documents.””

I looked back at the image.

Suddenly, the entire situation felt different again.

Jason had been the center of everything.

But maybe he wasn’t the beginning.

Maybe he was only one part of something larger.

That afternoon, I met with the investigator.

He placed several documents on the table.

“We believe Jason may have received assistance.””

“From who?””

“We don’t know yet.””

He showed me the photograph again.

“The timing is important.””

“What timing?””

“The ramp removal happened shortly after Jason received notice that the city would review his construction.””

I looked at him.

“So he knew.””

“Yes.””

“And someone helped him?””

“Possibly.””

I felt a chill.

Because if that was true, Jason’s actions weren’t just anger.

They were preparation.

He wasn’t reacting.

He was trying to get ahead of the consequences.

When I got home, Emma was doing homework.

She looked up.

“More Jason problems?””

I smiled sadly.

“Maybe.””

She sighed.

“He really doesn’t know when to stop.””

No.

He didn’t.

That evening, I reviewed everything from the beginning.

The first complaint.

The ramp removal.

The garage.

The survey.

The microphone.

The threats.

Every piece.

And then I noticed something.

A pattern.

Every time Jason acted, someone else seemed to know exactly what he needed.

The incorrect documents.

The construction advice.

The confidence that he could win.

Someone had been feeding him information.

The question was who.

The next morning, the investigator called.

“We identified the person in the photograph.””

I sat down.

“Who?””

His answer surprised me.

“It’s someone connected to Jason’s original property purchase.””

“Connected how?””

“A former business associate.””

I waited.

“And?””

The investigator sounded serious.

“We found messages between them.””

My heart started beating faster.

“What kind of messages?””

A pause.

“Messages discussing how to make the boundary issue ‘go away.’”

I closed my eyes.

Because finally, the truth was becoming clear.

Jason wasn’t just protecting his garage.

He was protecting a secret.

A secret that was much bigger than a few inches of property line.

The investigator continued.

“There’s one more thing.””

“What?””

“The person in the photograph contacted us this morning.””

I froze.

“Why?””

“He wants to cooperate.””

I didn’t know whether that was good news or another warning.

“What did he say?””

The investigator looked at his notes.

“He said Jason was never supposed to involve your daughter.””

The room went silent.

Because that sentence changed everything.

Not because it excused Jason.

Nothing could.

But because it revealed something important.

There had been a plan.

And somewhere along the way, Jason had crossed a line even his own partner didn’t expect.

I looked out the window.

At the ramp.

At the garage.

At the street where this entire nightmare began.

For weeks, I thought I was fighting one person.

I was wrong.

And now I had to find out exactly how deep this went.

Because if someone else helped Jason manipulate the truth…

May you like

I needed to know why.

And I needed to know what they were still hiding. :::
