Chapter 9: The Man Who Had Been Watching From the Shadows

The name stayed in the air long after Margaret said it.

Thomas Hale.

A name I had never heard before.

A name that somehow connected everything.

My parents.

My grandmother.

The company.

The missing money.

The secrets.

The lies.

I stared at Margaret.

“You’re saying he’s still alive?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me more than if she had said yes.

Because Margaret always had an answer.

She always had an explanation.

She always knew how to control the conversation.

But now?

Now she looked like someone who had just seen a ghost.

“Margaret.””

Richard’s voice was low.

“How do you know his name?””

She closed her eyes.

“I told you.””

“No.””

Richard leaned forward.

“You told us he existed.””

His expression hardened.

“But you didn’t tell us how you know.””

Nobody moved.

Margaret looked around the room.

At her husband.

At her son.

At me.

Then she whispered:

“Because he contacted me.””

The words hit the room like a storm.

Ethan immediately stood.

“When?””

Margaret looked at him.

“Years ago.””

“How many years?””

She swallowed.

“Before your wedding.””

My heart dropped.

Before my wedding.

Everything kept coming back to that moment.

Before I married Ethan.

Before I entered this family.

Before I thought I knew who they were.

“What did he want?”” Richard asked.

Margaret looked down.

“He wanted information.””

“What kind of information?””

She didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“About me?””

Her silence confirmed it.

I felt sick.

For years, I thought my life was ordinary.

A quiet childhood.

A normal job.

A simple marriage.

But now I was realizing there had always been something happening behind the scenes.

Something everyone knew about except me.

“What information did he want about me?””

Margaret looked at me.

“Your grandmother.””

I frowned.

“What about her?””

“He believed she had hidden something.””

Richard nodded slowly.

“She did.””

Everyone looked at him.

“What?””

Richard glanced at the documents.

“Your grandmother hid the original company records.””

I stared.

“Why?””

“To protect them.””

“From Thomas?””

“Yes.””

“And why did he want them?””

Richard’s face became serious.

“Because those records proved what happened.””

“What happened?””

“The fraud.””

The room became quiet.

“Thomas was involved with Victor.””

I looked at the photograph.

“The brothers?””

Richard nodded.

“Victor built the company with your grandmother. Thomas handled investments and outside deals.””

“And Margaret?””

Richard looked at her.

“She became connected to Thomas through the financial arrangements.””

Margaret immediately said:

“It wasn’t like that.””

Richard looked at her.

“Then explain.””

She couldn’t.

I watched her carefully.

For the first time, I wondered if Margaret had spent years pretending to be powerful because she was actually terrified.

Terrified of what would happen if the truth came out.

“Why did Thomas contact you?”” I asked.

Margaret looked at me.

“Because he thought I could help him find the records.””

“Could you?””

“No.””

Her answer came quickly.

But this time, I believed part of it.

Not all of it.

But part.

“Then why did you hide everything?””

Margaret looked away.

“Because I was scared.””

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because after everything she had done, fear sounded like a small excuse.

“You were scared?””

“Yes.””

“And what about me?””

She looked at me.

“I didn’t know what he would do.””

The room went silent.

I stared at her.

“What do you mean?””

Margaret’s face changed.

“I realized you were in danger.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

She looked ashamed.

“Because I thought I could control it.””

There it was.

The real reason.

Not love.

Not protection.

Control.

Margaret had always believed she could manage everything.

Everyone.

Every situation.

Every person.

Until now.

Ethan looked at his mother.

“You knew someone dangerous was interested in Emily…”

His voice shook.

“And you still brought her into this family?””

Margaret looked at him.

“I thought keeping her close was safer.””

Ethan stared.

“You married me to her because of this?””

“No.””

Her answer was immediate.

Then slower:

“Not only because of this.””

That hurt more than a confession.

Because it meant there was some truth in the worst thing I feared.

Our relationship had not been entirely our own.

There had been another reason.

Another plan.

Another person pulling strings.

I looked at Ethan.

“Did you know your mother was pushing you toward me?””

He looked devastated.

“No.””

“Did you ever wonder why she suddenly loved me after barely knowing me?””

He looked away.

And I knew.

He had wondered.

He just never asked.

Because asking questions would have forced him to see things he didn’t want to see.

Richard stood.

“We need to leave.””

I looked at him.

“Leave?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His expression was serious.

“Because if Thomas knows Emily has discovered the truth, staying here is dangerous.””

My heart started racing.

“Why would he know?””

Nobody answered.

Then Richard pointed toward the window.

I followed his gaze.

Outside, beyond the snow-covered yard, there was a dark figure standing near the road.

Watching the house.

My entire body went cold.

“Who is that?””

Nobody spoke.

Richard walked toward the window carefully.

Then he pulled the curtain closed.

“Everyone stay away from the windows.””

The command in his voice terrified me.

Because Richard was never dramatic.

Never afraid.

But now he was.

Ethan moved toward me.

“Emily.””

I stepped back.

Not because I hated him.

Because I didn’t know where I stood anymore.

“I’m sorry.””

The words surprised me.

Not because they were unexpected.

Because they were the first genuine words he had said all night.

No excuses.

No defense.

Just sorry.

“For what?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“For not believing you before.””

I looked away.

“That doesn’t fix it.””

“I know.””

“For six years, I needed you.””

“I know.””

“You told me to ignore it.””

“I know.””

His voice broke.

“And I was wrong.””

I looked at him.

There was something different.

Not a perfect husband.

Not someone who could erase what happened.

But someone finally seeing the damage.

“I don’t know if I can forgive you.””

He nodded.

“I understand.””

That answer surprised me.

Because the old Ethan would have asked me to move on.

The old Ethan would have asked me to make things easier.

But this Ethan just accepted the pain.

Richard returned to the table.

“There’s one more thing.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course there was.

“What now?””

He picked up the final document.

“Your grandmother didn’t only hide the records.””

“What else?””

“She hid a second inheritance.””

I frowned.

“I thought we already knew about the inheritance.””

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

He placed the document in front of me.

“This is not money.””

I looked down.

The paper contained a name.

A location.

And a date.

“What is this?””

“Something your grandmother wanted you to find.””

“What?””

Richard looked at me.

“The person who can prove the truth.””

My heart raced.

“Who?””

Richard answered:

“Victor Hale.””

I stared at him.

“But you said he disappeared.””

“He did.””

“Then how can he help me?””

Richard looked at the document.

“Because your grandmother discovered he never disappeared.””

The room went silent.

“He was hiding.””

“From Thomas?””

Richard nodded.

“And from everyone else.””

I picked up the paper.

At the bottom was an address.

A place I had never heard of.

And beneath it, my grandmother’s handwriting.

One final message.

Find him before they do.

My hands trembled.

“Who is ‘they’?””

Nobody answered.

Then Ethan looked toward the locked front door.

His face suddenly changed.

Because outside…

A sound echoed through the quiet night.

A car door closing.

Then footsteps.

Slow.

Approaching the house.

Margaret whispered:

“He found us.””

The lights flickered.

And for the first time that night, I realized something.

The secrets inside this house were dangerous.

May you like

But the person coming to the door…

Was even more dangerous.
