Chapter 1

My mother-in-law grabbed me by the hair while I was washing dishes and dragged me across the kitchen floor in front of the entire family. But what destroyed me wasn’t her accusation—it was watching my husband stand there and do nothing.
We were at Linda’s house outside Dallas for Sunday dinner.
I had just finished clearing everyone’s plates.
My husband, Ryan, was talking with his brother in the living room while I washed dishes alone.
Suddenly, Linda stormed into the kitchen.
“Where is it?”
I turned around. “Where is what?”
“My diamond bracelet.”
“I haven’t seen your bracelet.”
She opened my purse on the counter and dumped everything onto the floor.
“Stop going through my things.”
Then she grabbed a fistful of my hair.
I screamed as she yanked me backward.
“You little thief!”
My knees hit the tile.
She dragged me from the kitchen into the living room while everyone stared.
“Linda, let go of me!”
She threw me down in front of Ryan.
“Your wife stole the bracelet your father gave me.”
I looked up at my husband.
“Ryan, tell her to stop.”
He didn’t move.
His mother pointed at me.
“She married you for money, and I’ve been warning you for years.”
I waited for Ryan to defend me.
Instead, he quietly said, “Sarah, maybe you should just tell us where it is.”
Something inside me went completely cold.
“You think I stole it too?”
He wouldn’t look at me.
That was my answer.
I stood up, pulled off my wedding ring, and threw it straight at his chest.
“You can keep that along with your mother.”
Linda laughed.
So I grabbed the wet dish towel still hanging from my shoulder and threw it hard into her face.
Then I took out my phone.
Ryan finally stepped forward. “Who are you calling?”
“My lawyer.”
His face changed.
“Sarah, don’t be ridiculous.”
I walked toward the front door while my attorney answered.
Before I could speak, Ryan’s 16-year-old niece came running down the stairs.
“Aunt Sarah, wait!”
Everyone turned toward her.
She was holding Linda’s missing diamond bracelet in one hand and her phone in the other.
“I found this in Uncle Ryan’s bedroom.”

Ryan went completely white.
Then she looked at me and whispered, “And you need to see the video of him putting it in your purse before dinner.”
