Calm

Chapter 1

My husband slapped our 9-year-old daughter across the face at his mother's birthday dinner, then told everyone she deserved it. I was already reaching for her when my father-in-law quietly said, “Sarah, don't leave yet.”

The entire table went silent.

My daughter Emily stood beside me with one hand pressed against her red cheek.

“What did you just do?” I asked.

My husband Daniel didn't even look ashamed.

“She called my mother a liar.”

His mother, Patricia, leaned back in her chair and said, “Children need consequences.”

Emily started crying. “Mom, I wasn't lying.”

I grabbed her coat and pulled her behind me.

Daniel blocked the doorway.

“You walk out now, don't bother coming home.”

I stared at the man I'd been married to for eleven years.

“Move.”

He laughed like I was embarrassing myself.

Then Patricia said, “Sarah, think carefully. That house isn't yours.”

That stopped me.

Daniel had always told me our house outside Dallas belonged to both of us.

Patricia smiled when she saw my face.

“Oh. He never told you?”

Daniel snapped, “Mom, shut up.”

My stomach dropped.

Emily suddenly tugged my sleeve.

“Mom, that's what Grandma was lying about.”

Everyone looked at her.

I crouched beside her. “What did she tell you?”

Emily wiped her tears and pointed toward Patricia's purse.

“She said Daddy finally signed the papers today.”

Daniel went pale.

Patricia grabbed her purse off the chair.

My father-in-law, James, stood up for the first time all night.

“Put the purse down, Patricia.”

“Stay out of this.”

“No,” James said. “I've stayed out of it for twelve years.”

Daniel stepped toward him. “Dad.”

James ignored him and looked directly at me.

“Sarah, Daniel didn't hit Emily because she called Patricia a liar.”

My hands started shaking.

“He hit her because she saw something she wasn't supposed to see.”

Patricia rushed for the hallway, but James caught her purse and dumped it across the dining table.

Keys, lipstick, receipts, and a thick white envelope scattered between the plates.

Daniel lunged for it.

I grabbed the envelope first.

My name was printed across the front.

Inside was a property document, a photograph I'd never seen, and a handwritten letter dated three days before my wedding.

I unfolded the letter.

May you like

The first sentence made my knees buckle.

“Sarah, if you're reading this, Daniel and his mother finally found out who your real father is—”
