Chapter 5: The Family Meeting I Was Never Invited To
Rachel arrived at my hotel at 5:40 that evening carrying a paper shopping bag and a look of genuine concern.
She had brought sandwiches, bottled water, and a small pharmacy bag containing pain medication and a cold compress.
"You look worse than you did this morning," she said.
"My shoulder feels worse.""
"Did you get it checked?""
"I haven't had time.""
Rachel frowned.
"Claire, you were pushed into a pool and hit your shoulder against concrete. You need to see a doctor.""
She was right.
I had spent the entire day dealing with documents and financial questions while treating my injuries like an inconvenience.
Rachel helped me arrange an appointment at an urgent care clinic for the following morning.
Then she placed her handbag on the desk.
"I found something.""
She removed her phone and opened a group chat.
It was a family conversation involving Ethan, Linda, Marcus, Rachel, and several relatives.
"I didn't know whether I should show you," she said.
"Why?""
"Because I think you'll be angry.""
I looked at her.
"Rachel, I'm already angry.""
She handed me the phone.
The first message was from Linda.
*Linda:* Claire is being dramatic again. Ethan needs everyone to stay calm until she gets over herself.
Then Marcus had replied.
*Marcus:* Does that mean we're still getting the house?
Linda answered:
*Linda:* Yes. Your brother has everything handled.
Another message appeared.
*Ethan:* Nobody contact Claire about the property. I'll deal with her.
My stomach tightened.
I scrolled further.
A message from Linda caught my attention.
*Linda:* She always comes around when she realizes how much everyone needs her.
Then Marcus wrote something that made me put the phone down.
*Marcus:* She's not going to let us lose this over a stupid pool joke, is she?
Ethan responded with a laughing emoji.
Rachel watched my face.
"I'm sorry.""
I handed the phone back.
"How long have you known about the house?""
"About three weeks. I thought Ethan was buying it himself.""
"Did you know they expected me to pay?""
"No. I swear.""
I believed her.
Rachel had been the only person at the birthday weekend who had actually helped me leave.
"Why are you showing me this?""
"Because I don't think they understand what they've done.""
I looked at the conversation again.
"They understand perfectly. They just don't think there will be consequences.""
Rachel nodded slowly.
"There's another thing.""
I waited.
"Marcus said Ethan was planning to announce the house at Sunday's lunch. He wanted Linda to have a key in front of everyone.""
I stared at her.
"Sunday's lunch was the catering order.""
"Yes.""
The pieces began fitting together.
The birthday weekend wasn't just a celebration.
The expensive lunch was supposed to be a family announcement.
The house was supposed to be a gift.
And I was apparently expected to fund it while everyone congratulated Ethan for being generous.
I laughed once.
"That's impressive.""
Rachel frowned.
"What?""
"He was going to use my money to buy a house for his mother, then stand in front of the family and receive applause.""
Rachel looked down.
"Claire...""
"No, it's fine. I finally understand the performance.""
I opened my laptop.
There was a new email from Gregory.
He had confirmed that the agreement was being reviewed and that the transaction would not proceed using the disputed guarantee.
He also attached a copy of the original submission.
The document included an electronic authorization page.
I read the details carefully.
The application had been submitted using an email address belonging to Linda.
The attached signature appeared to have been copied from an older document.
And there was another troubling detail.
The application listed my annual income incorrectly.
It was higher than my actual salary.
Someone had deliberately inflated my financial information to make the guarantee appear stronger.
I called Gregory again.
"Can you tell me where the financial figures came from?""
He checked his records.
"Those were entered by the applicant.""
"Who was the applicant?""
"Mr. Ethan Williams.""
I looked at Rachel.
"Was any verification performed?""
"We received the information electronically.""
"Did anyone speak to me?""
"No, ma'am.""
"Did anyone independently confirm my consent?""
There was a pause.
"No.""
I thanked him and ended the call.
Then I saved the email.
At 7:15 p.m., Ethan sent another message.
*Ethan:* We need to have a family conversation.
I didn't answer.
At 7:42, Linda called.
I let it ring.
At 8:03, Marcus sent a message.
*Marcus:* I hope you're happy. You just ruined everything.
I read it twice.
Then I typed:
*Me:* I hope you find a house you can afford.
He immediately called.
"Are you serious?"" he shouted when I answered.
"About what?""
"The house!""
"Why are you calling me?""
"Because you're destroying our opportunity.""
I looked at the wall.
"Marcus, I barely know you.""
"We're family!""
"Then perhaps you should have treated me like family before expecting me to finance your house.""
He laughed bitterly.
"You're acting like you're the only person who has ever helped anyone.""
I almost dropped the phone.
"How much have I given you?""
"What?""
"How much money have I given you over the past two years?""
"I don't know.""
"Exactly.""
He said something under his breath.
Then he hung up.
Rachel shook her head.
"They really believe you owe them.""
I looked at my laptop.
"I think that's because I've spent years teaching them they can ask for anything.""
At nine, I received a call from an unknown number.
I answered cautiously.
"Hello?""
"Mrs. Williams? This is Officer Daniel Harper with the local police department. I'm calling regarding an incident report.""
I sat straighter.
"What incident?""
"Your husband contacted us earlier today.""
My stomach tightened.
"Why?""
"He reported that you removed certain property from the rental cabin and may have damaged items during your departure.""
I closed my eyes.
"That's not true.""
"He also stated that you left without permission and took some household items.""
"Household items?""
"Clothing and personal belongings, according to his statement.""
I looked at Rachel.
She was listening.
"Officer, I took my own suitcase, clothes, laptop, and personal jewelry. I didn't damage anything.""
"Do you have documentation?""
"Yes. I have photographs and receipts.""
He asked me to email the photographs and provide a statement.
I agreed.
Before ending the call, he added something.
"Your husband also mentioned that you may have been intoxicated during the pool incident.""
I felt my face grow hot.
"I was not drinking. I have a video showing exactly what happened.""
"That would be helpful.""
After the call, Rachel shook her head.
"He actually reported you?""
"Apparently.""
"That's unbelievable.""
I looked at my phone.
A new message had appeared from Ethan.
*Ethan:* You need to come home tomorrow. We are settling this in person.
Then another.
*Ethan:* Mom, Marcus, and everyone else will be there.
I stared at the screen.
He wasn't asking me to return because he missed me.
He wanted an audience.
He wanted to surround me with the same people who had laughed when he pushed me into the pool and pressure me into backing down.
I turned the phone toward Rachel.
"Do you think I should go?""
She shook her head.
"Not without knowing what they want.""
I looked at the message again.
Then I typed one sentence.
*Me:* Send me everything you want to discuss in writing.
Ethan read it immediately.
But instead of answering, he sent a photograph.
It showed our living room.
On the coffee table sat a thick folder.
Beside it was my wedding photograph.
And across the picture, someone had placed a handwritten note.
*COME HOME BEFORE THIS GETS UGLY.*
I enlarged the image.
Then I noticed something in the background.
The office door was open.
And on the desk was a small black storage box.
The box where I kept my grandmother's original jewelry documents and personal papers.
I hadn't taken it with me.
I called Ethan immediately.
"What have you done with my documents?""
He answered calmly.
"Come home, Claire.""
"Where is my jewelry box?""
"Everything is safe.""
"Did you go through my office?""
"You're my wife. I don't need permission to enter my own house.""
I looked at Rachel.
May you like
Then I heard Ethan say something that made my blood run cold.
"Besides, there's something in that box you should have told me about years ago.""
