Chapter 7: The Enemy Who Had Been Watching Me for Years
I didn’t sleep after Lisa Monroe’s phone call.
Not because I was afraid.
Because suddenly, every moment of the last eight years was being rewritten in my mind.
My former boss.
The person who had spent years taking credit for my work.
The person who smiled during meetings while repeating my ideas as if they were his own.
The person who told executives I was “too emotional” whenever I challenged him.
The person who somehow always escaped blame when projects failed.
Victor Lang.
I had not spoken his name in months.
But the moment Lisa said it, everything clicked into place.
The exhaustion.
The burnout.
The constant pressure.
The slow destruction of my reputation.
It had never been random.
It had been preparation.
I sat on the edge of my bed staring at the lake outside my window.
The moon reflected across the water, peaceful and beautiful.
A strange contrast to the storm inside my head.
How many times had I questioned myself?
How many nights had I wondered if maybe I really wasn’t strong enough?
Maybe I wasn’t handling stress correctly.
Maybe I was the problem.
That was the most dangerous thing about manipulation.
The person hurting you doesn’t always need to convince others you are weak.
They only need to convince you.
And Victor had been doing exactly that.
My phone rang again.
Lisa.
I answered immediately.
“Tell me everything.””
She was quiet for a moment.
“I wasn’t sure you would believe me.””
“I believe you.””
“You shouldn’t.””
Her answer surprised me.
“Why?””
“Because what I’m about to tell you sounds impossible.””
I leaned back.
“Try me.””
Lisa took a deep breath.
“Victor Lang knew about your settlement before you did.””
My entire body went still.
“How?””
“I don’t know exactly. But he had people monitoring the legal process after your departure.””
“Why?””
Another pause.
“Because he was afraid.””
That made no sense.
Victor had always acted untouchable.
He was confident.
Powerful.
The kind of person who walked into a room and expected everyone to adjust around him.
“Afraid of what?””
Lisa lowered her voice.
“Of what you might reveal.””
The words hit differently.
Because suddenly, I remembered.
Before I left the company, I had discovered irregularities.
Financial reports that didn’t match.
Projects where numbers had been manipulated.
Vendor contracts that looked suspicious.
I had started asking questions.
Too many questions.
At first, Victor laughed.
Then he became annoyed.
Then he became threatening.
“You’re overthinking things, Claire.””
“You need to learn how business works.””
“You’re letting stress affect your judgment.””
The same phrases.
The same strategy.
Make the person asking questions look unstable.
And I had almost believed him.
“What did I know?”” I asked.
Lisa sighed.
“You found evidence that Victor had been moving company funds through fake consulting agreements.””
My heart raced.
The $15,000 payment to Ryan.
The fake consulting description.
The pattern was the same.
“He taught them how to do it.””
“Yes.””
The answer was immediate.
“He created the system.””
I stood and began walking through the house.
My mind was moving faster than I could process.
My family had not randomly decided to steal my property.
They had been handed a blueprint.
A strategy.
A weapon.
“Why tell me now?”” I asked.
Lisa didn’t answer immediately.
When she finally spoke, her voice sounded tired.
“Because I was scared.””
“Of Victor?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I helped him.””
The confession stopped me.
“What?””
“I was his assistant for six years.””
I gripped the phone tighter.
“You helped him?””
“I didn’t know at first.””
Her voice cracked.
“I thought I was helping him organize business documents. Then I started seeing things. Names.
Payments. Transfers.””
“And you stayed?””
“I tried to leave.””
Silence.
“He made sure I couldn’t.””
I closed my eyes.
Another person trapped by Victor.
Another person who had learned that powerful people didn’t always need violence.
Sometimes they used fear.
“What do you have?”” I asked.
“Copies.””
“Of what?””
“The original documents.””
My heartbeat increased.
“Original documents?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
“I have them hidden.””
I looked around the empty house.
Everything felt connected.
Every betrayal.
Every lie.
Every carefully placed piece.
“Lisa, I need those.””
“I know.””
“Then why haven’t you given them to anyone?””
“Because I knew Victor would come after whoever had them.””
A chill moved through me.
“And now?””
“Now he already came after you.””
I said nothing.
Because she was right.
Victor had already crossed the line.
He had used my own family as weapons.
He had tried to take my home.
My money.
My identity.
But he made one mistake.
He underestimated what happened when someone who had spent years being controlled finally stopped being afraid.
“Meet me tomorrow,” I said.
Lisa hesitated.
“Are you sure?””
“Yes.””
“Claire…”
I interrupted.
“Bring everything.””
A long silence followed.
Then she answered.
“I will.””
When the call ended, I looked at the lake.
For years, I thought my biggest battle was proving my worth.
I was wrong.
May you like
The real battle was proving I was not powerless.
And Victor Lang was about to learn the difference.
