Chapter 7: What Happened in the Barn
I stared at the photograph until the screen went dark.
My father stood beside a little boy outside the old Hill Country property. The boy couldn't have been older than seven. He had dark hair, a crooked smile, and one hand wrapped around my father's fingers.
Behind them stood the red barn.
The same barn where Leo had played with his cousins on the day he disappeared.
The same barn the police had searched fourteen months earlier.
I enlarged the photograph.
There was something written on the boy's shirt.
A small embroidered name.
*NOAH.*
“Who is Noah?”” I asked.
Elena looked over my shoulder.
The moment she saw the photograph, she covered her mouth.
“Oh, God.””
I turned toward her.
“You know him?””
She nodded slowly.
“Daniel, put the phone away.””
“I'm not putting anything away. Who is Noah?””
Officer Ramirez approached.
“Is that another photograph connected to the investigation?””
I handed her the phone.
She studied it.
“Do you recognize the child, ma'am?””
Elena shook her head.
Then she stopped.
“I've seen him before.””
“Where?””
“At the property.””
My heart began racing.
“When?””
“Years ago. Before Dad died.””
I grabbed the edge of the table.
“How many children did our father have?””
Elena started crying.
“I don't know.””
“That's not an answer.””
“I know about Caleb. I know about Noah. I don't know if there were others.””
Sarah stepped closer.
“Your mother knew?””
Elena nodded.
“She knew everything.””
I felt something inside me snap.
For years, my mother had told me that our family had no secrets.
She had organized birthday dinners, sent Christmas cards, and reminded us to call each other.
She had sat beside me when Leo was born.
She had cried when Maya took her first steps.
And apparently, she had spent years hiding an entire branch of our family.
Ramirez handed the phone back.
“Mr. Carter, I need the original image and the sender's number. We'll have our technical team examine it.””
I nodded.
Then I called the number.
It rang once.
Twice.
A man answered.
“Hello?””
“Who is this?””
A pause.
“Daniel Carter?””
“Who sent me the photograph?””
“My name is Noah.””
I looked at Elena.
She had gone completely still.
“Are you the boy in the picture?””
“Yes.””
“How old are you?””
“Seventeen.””
“Where are you?””
“Not somewhere I can tell you over the phone.””
“Do you know Caleb?””
His breathing changed.
“Yes.””
“Where is he?””
A long silence followed.
Then Noah said, “You need to stop asking questions about Caleb and start asking what happened to Leo.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Leo is with me.””
“I know.””
“How?””
“Because Michael called me.””
My blood ran cold.
“Michael knows you're calling me?””
“He knows I know.””
“Then tell me what happened at the barn.””
Noah lowered his voice.
“Your mother found out Dad was moving money into accounts for us. She didn't want anyone knowing about the children from his first marriage.””
I closed my eyes.
“Go on.””
“She made a deal with Michael. He would take care of the paperwork and keep us away from the family. In exchange, he got access to the money.””
“Why would Michael agree?””
“Because he was already running the company your sister used.””
I looked at Elena.
She was staring at the floor.
Noah continued.
“Caleb found out. He told your father he was going to tell you everything. Dad promised to help him.””
“What happened?””
“Your father died before he could.””
I swallowed.
“And the barn?””
Noah was silent for several seconds.
Then he said, “That's where they kept the records.””
I felt a chill move through my body.
“What records?””
“Birth certificates. Trust documents. Medical records. Everything.””
“Who kept them?””
“My grandmother.””
The word struck me.
“Our mother?””
“Yes.””
I looked toward Sarah.
She was listening now.
“Your grandmother used to come to the barn with Michael,” Noah said.
“They would argue about the children. Sometimes Caleb and I could hear them.””
I closed my eyes.
“What did you hear?””
Noah's voice cracked.
“She said there was no room for us in her family.””
I couldn't speak.
“She said if anyone found out, everything she had built would fall apart.””
“Where is the barn now?””
“Still standing.””
“Then I'm going there.””
“Don't.””
“Why?””
“Because Michael knows you have the photograph.””
The call suddenly went silent.
“Hello?””
I heard a door slam on Noah's end.
Then a man's voice.
“Who are you talking to?””
Noah whispered, “Nobody.””
The call disconnected.
I stared at the phone.
Officer Ramirez immediately requested a trace of the number.
“Mr. Carter, you are not going to that property alone.””
“I wasn't planning to.””
Sarah grabbed my hand.
“Daniel, Leo needs us.””
“I know.””
“He's been home for less than a day. We can't disappear into another investigation.””
I looked at her.
She was right.
But another child might be missing.
And my sister had admitted that Caleb had disappeared after helping Leo.
I turned toward Elena.
“Where is the barn key?””
She shook her head.
“Michael has it.””
“Then we'll get it from him.””
Ramirez stepped forward.
“That's not how this works. We'll obtain the necessary authorization.””
Before I could answer, her phone rang.
She listened for several seconds.
Then her expression changed.
“What do you mean, the property has been sold?””
She looked at me.
“Mr. Carter, the old family property was transferred to a private buyer eleven days ago.””
My mouth went dry.
“Who bought it?””
Ramirez checked the information.
Then she looked up.
“Red Mesa Residential Services.””
I turned toward Elena.
She was crying again.
But this time, she wasn't looking at me.
She was looking at the photograph.
And she whispered:
“Michael didn't sell the property.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He gave it away.””
“To whom?””
May you like
She looked directly into my eyes.
“To Noah.””
