Chapter 5: The Threat Hidden Behind A Perfect Smile
For several seconds, I couldn’t breathe.
I stared at the picture on my phone.
Then I looked toward the hallway.
Toward Emily.
She was standing right there.
Alive.
Safe.
But the image on my screen told me something else.
Someone had been close enough to my house to take a picture of my daughter while she slept.
Someone had been watching.
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Daddy?””
Emily immediately noticed my expression.
“What happened?””
I locked the screen.
“Nothing.””
The second the word left my mouth, I regretted it.
Because I had promised her.
No more hiding.
No more pretending everything was fine.
She had spent months living inside someone else’s lies.
I wasn’t going to add another one.
“Actually…”
I stopped.
Emily’s eyes searched mine.
“What is it?””
I turned the phone around.
She looked at the picture.
The color drained from her face.
For a moment, she didn’t move.
Then her hand covered her mouth.
“No.””
Her voice was barely audible.
“No, no, no…”
I stood immediately.
“Emily.””
She stepped backward.
“How did he know?””
I didn’t answer.
Because I knew exactly who she meant.
Ryan.
“He was here.””
The fear in her voice made my chest tighten.
“I don’t know that.””
“Yes, you do.””
She looked at me.
“You know.””
I hated that she was right.
A person doesn’t send a picture like that by accident.
A person doesn’t say You should have stayed out unless they know exactly what they are trying to communicate.
This wasn’t a warning.
It was a message.
A message saying:
I can reach you.
I can watch you.
I am still in control.
I called the police.
Not because I believed they would magically fix everything.
Not because I expected someone to appear and erase what happened.
I called because fear grows in darkness.
And I was done letting Ryan operate there.
While we waited, Emily sat on the couch.
She held one hand over her belly.
The other hand held mine.
I noticed something.
She wasn’t crying anymore.
She was scared.
But she wasn’t breaking.
Something inside her had changed.
Maybe leaving had done that.
Maybe telling the truth had done that.
Maybe sometimes the first step toward healing was simply being believed.
The officers arrived twenty minutes later.
I explained everything.
The apartment.
The bruises.
The message.
The photograph.
One officer, a woman named Carter, listened carefully.
She didn’t interrupt.
She didn’t question Emily like she was responsible for what happened.
She simply asked:
“Are you afraid he will come here?””
Emily hesitated.
Then answered honestly.
“Yes.””
Officer Carter nodded.
“Has he threatened you before?””
Emily looked down.
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Last night.””
“What did he say?””
Emily swallowed.
“He said I was destroying his family.””
The officer wrote something down.
“Anything else?””
Emily was quiet.
Then:
“He said nobody would believe me.””
Officer Carter looked at her.
“Do you believe that?””
Emily didn’t answer.
She didn’t have to.
I could see the answer.
That was exactly what Ryan wanted her to believe.
That she had no voice.
No options.
No one.
The officer asked for Ryan’s information.
When she heard his name, her expression didn’t change.
But she looked at the other officer.
A small glance.
A silent communication.
I noticed.
“Do you know him?””
I asked.
Officer Carter shook her head.
“No.””
But she didn’t sound convincing.
I waited.
Finally, she said:
“We have responded to a call involving him before.””
My stomach tightened.
“What kind of call?””
She looked at Emily.
Then back at me.
“An argument with a previous partner.””
Emily’s eyes widened.
“Sarah?””
The officer paused.
“Yes.””
The room became silent.
“How long ago?”” I asked.
“About three years.””
“And what happened?””
Officer Carter looked uncomfortable.
“The woman didn’t file charges.””
Of course.
Another person who walked away quietly.
Another person whose pain disappeared because there was no official record.
“Can you tell us anything?””
She shook her head.
“Not much.””
But the way she said it told me there was more.
After taking the information, the officers left.
Before leaving, Officer Carter pulled me aside.
“Mr. Cole.””
“Yes?””
“Document everything.””
“I will.””
“Save every message. Every photo. Every call.””
“I will.””
She looked serious.
“And don’t confront him alone.””
I understood why she said it.
Because part of me wanted to.
Part of me wanted to walk into Ryan’s apartment and demand answers.
But anger was exactly what he wanted.
Angry people make mistakes.
Careful people win.
That afternoon, I called a lawyer.
Not because I wanted revenge.
Because I wanted protection.
Emily sat beside me during the call.
She listened quietly.
When I hung up, she said:
“Daddy?””
“Yes?””
“What if he takes the baby?””
The question broke something in me.
Because that was the fear behind everything.
Not just losing Ryan.
Losing control.
Losing her child.
I turned toward her.
“He doesn’t get to scare you into staying.””
“But what if he tries?””
“Then we handle it.””
“What if everyone believes him?””
I held her hand.
“Everyone doesn’t matter.””
She looked at me.
“What?””
“The only people who matter are the ones who know the truth.””
She looked away.
“I spent so much time trying to make him happy.””
“I know.””
“I stopped seeing friends.””
“I know.””
“I stopped calling you because he said my family was causing problems.””
I closed my eyes.
That one hurt.
Because I had wondered why my daughter had become distant.
I had wondered if she was just busy.
Pregnant.
Preparing for the baby.
I never imagined someone was slowly cutting her away from everyone who loved her.
“Emily.””
“Yes?””
“I’m sorry.””
Her eyebrows pulled together.
“For what?””
“For not seeing it.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“I should have known.””
“No, Daddy.””
Her voice became stronger.
“You should have trusted me when I finally told you.””
I looked at her.
And I realized something.
She wasn’t asking me to carry her pain.
She was asking me to stand beside her.
That was different.
That evening, Rachel came to my house.
She looked nothing like the confident woman I remembered.
She looked exhausted.
Scared.
She carried a small folder.
“I brought everything.””
Emily looked at the folder.
“What is it?””
Rachel sat down.
“Things I should have given someone years ago.””
She opened it.
Inside were printed screenshots.
Emails.
Old messages.
I looked at her.
“You saved all this?””
She nodded.
“I thought one day someone might need it.””
Emily looked at her.
“Why didn’t you help Sarah?””
Rachel looked away.
The question hurt.
But she deserved it.
“I tried.””
“How?””
“I told her she should leave.””
“And?””
Rachel swallowed.
“She said she was afraid nobody would believe her.””
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
Because she understood that sentence.
Too well.
“What happened after?””
“She left.””
“Where did she go?””
“I don’t know.””
Rachel looked at the documents.
“But before she disappeared from our lives, she sent me these.””
She handed Emily one paper.
Emily read it.
Her face changed.
“What?””
I leaned closer.
The message was from Sarah.
If something happens to me, please don’t let him convince everyone I was crazy.
The room went quiet.
Those words were not a goodbye.
They were a warning.
Rachel whispered:
“She knew.””
“Knew what?””
“That he would rewrite the story.””
My phone suddenly rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone froze.
I answered.
“Hello?””
No voice.
Only breathing.
Then:
“John.””
Ryan.
My jaw tightened.
“How did you get this number?””
“You’re making a mistake.””
I stood.
“You threatened my daughter.””
“No.””
His voice was calm.
“I warned you.””
“About what?””
A pause.
Then:
“About destroying your own family.””
I almost laughed.
“You hurt my daughter.””
“You don’t know what happened.””
“I saw what happened.””
“You saw one moment.””
His voice sharpened.
“You don’t know the years before that.””
I looked at Emily.
She was listening.
Everyone was.
“Ryan.””
“Yes?””
“You need to understand something.””
“What?””
“I don’t care what story you tell.””
Silence.
“I believe my daughter.””
For the first time, Ryan didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“You really think you know her?””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“You don’t know everything.””
My stomach tightened.
“What are you talking about?””
A low laugh.
“You should ask Emily what she was doing before she came home yesterday.””
I looked at my daughter.
She looked confused.
“What?””
Ryan continued.
“You think I’m the only one hiding things?””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Ryan.””
But he had already ended the call.
The room stayed silent.
Emily looked terrified.
Not because she believed him.
Because she knew exactly what he was trying to do.
Create doubt.
Break trust.
Make everyone question everything.
I sat beside her.
“Emily.””
She looked at me.
“Is there something you need to tell me?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
Then she whispered:
“There is something I never told you.””
My heart sank.
“What?””
She looked at the floor.
“Before I married Ryan…”
She took a shaky breath.
“I found something.””
“What?””
Her voice became barely audible.
“Something about him.””
I leaned closer.
“What did you find?””
She looked up.
And the fear in her eyes told me the truth.
Whatever she had discovered back then…
It was the reason Ryan chose her.
Not by accident.
Not by chance.
May you like
He knew exactly who Emily was.
And he had chosen her for a reason.
