Chapter 11: My Mother's Final Lie

Mom arrived at the police station at 2:40 p.m.

She looked frightened.

Her hands were shaking, and she kept adjusting the strap of her handbag.

When she saw me, she stopped.

“Emily.””

I didn't stand.

“Sit down, Mom.””

She glanced at Thomas Reed.

“Why am I here?””

Thomas placed a printed photograph on the table.

It showed Grandma sitting with a folder in her hands.

“Do you recognize this?””

Mom stared at it.

“Yes.””

“Do you know what was inside the folder?””

She swallowed.

“No.””

Thomas placed another photograph beside it.

This one showed the old storage unit.

Mom's face changed.

“Where did you get that?””

I answered.

“Grandma left it for me.””

Mom looked at me.

“What?””

“She left a letter. And a video.””

Mom's lips parted.

I reached into my bag and removed the handwritten note.

Patricia knows where the original records are.

I placed it between us.

“Why did Grandma write this?””

Mom looked down.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she whispered:

“Because I helped her hide them.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Mom's eyes filled with tears.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of Michael?””

She nodded.

Thomas leaned forward.

“Mrs. Jones, we need you to explain exactly what happened.””

Mom pressed her hands together.

“Years ago, your grandmother discovered that Michael was taking money from the family business. She confronted him privately.””

“And?””

“He threatened her.””

I stared at her.

“What kind of threat?””

“He said he could destroy the family. He said he had enough information to make it look like Grandma had authorized the transfers herself.””

Daniel frowned.

“But the documents proved otherwise.””

“Yes. That's why she made copies.””

Mom looked at me.

“She asked me to help her move the originals somewhere safe.””

“Where?””

Mom closed her eyes.

“Inside an old safe at the house.””

I frowned.

“Which house?””

“Your grandmother's old house. The one that was sold after she died.””

Thomas wrote something down.

“Do you know whether the safe is still there?””

Mom shook her head.

“I don't know.””

I stared at her.

“You knew all this, and you let Vanessa go after my inheritance?””

Mom began crying.

“I didn't know Vanessa was involved with Michael.””

“You knew Michael was dangerous.””

“I thought he had moved on.””

“Then why did you let him get close to Vanessa?””

Mom looked at the table.

“Because Vanessa told me he was helping her.””

I felt something inside me break.

“You helped her forge my signature.””

Mom covered her face.

“I didn't write it.””

“But you knew it wasn't mine.””

She nodded.

I waited for an explanation.

None came.

Finally, I asked the question that had been haunting me.

“Did you know about the accident?””

Mom looked up quickly.

“No.””

“Did Vanessa tell you she was planning something?””

“No.””

“Did she tell you anything about Michael following me?””

Mom hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

“Mom?””

She began crying harder.

“She said he wanted to speak to you.””

“When?””

“A few days before the accident.””

My chest tightened.

“What did she say he wanted?””

“She said he wanted you to sign the trust papers.””

I stared at her.

“And what did you tell her?””

“I told her to leave you alone.””

“But you didn't tell me.””

Mom shook her head.

“I thought she would handle it.””

I stood as carefully as my shoulder allowed.

“You keep saying that.””

She looked up.

“What?””

“You thought Vanessa would handle it. You thought Michael would handle it. You thought everything would somehow fix itself.””

My voice trembled.

“But nobody thought about what would happen to me.””

Mom reached for my hand.

I stepped away.

“Emily, please.””

I shook my head.

“I need you to understand something. I don't know if I can ever trust you again.””

Later that afternoon, Thomas informed us that officers had located the original property records connected to Grandma's former house.

The current owner had agreed to allow a search of the property.

Robert joined us.

He looked deeply ashamed.

“I should have told you everything sooner.””

I nodded.

“Yes. You should have.””

He didn't defend himself.

At the house, officers searched the old study.

Behind a wooden panel in the wall, they discovered a small metal safe.

Mom stood near the doorway, trembling.

“I remember that,” she whispered.

Thomas asked her for the combination.

She gave it to him.

The safe opened.

Inside were several folders, a sealed envelope, and a small digital recorder.

James examined the documents.

“These are original bank statements.””

Robert picked up one of the folders.

His face changed.

“These transfers were made through Michael's company.””

Daniel leaned over his shoulder.

“Dad, look at the dates.””

The transfers had begun almost seven years earlier.

Several were authorized using Robert's business credentials.

Robert stared at the pages.

“I never approved these.””

Thomas looked at him.

“Do you have records proving that?””

Robert nodded.

“Yes. My office has the original authorization logs.””

James continued examining the documents.

Then he found something else.

A letter addressed to my grandmother.

It was signed by Michael Bennett.

The letter contained a promise to repay several unauthorized transfers.

But the final paragraph was what caught my attention.

Should the matter become public, I expect your cooperation in protecting the interests of everyone involved.

I looked at Mom.

“Was this what he used to threaten Grandma?””

She nodded.

“He said he would make sure the whole family was investigated.””

Daniel shook his head.

“So Grandma kept quiet to protect us.””

Robert looked devastated.

“She was trying to protect me.””

Thomas placed the documents into evidence bags.

“We'll need to review all of this.””

Then he picked up the digital recorder.

“Does anyone know what's on this?””

Mom shook her head.

Thomas pressed play.

At first, there was static.

Then Michael's voice.

Clear.

Calm.

Angry.

“You don't understand, Margaret. If those records come out, nobody in your family walks away clean.””

Grandma's voice followed.

“I am not afraid of you.””

Michael laughed.

“You should be.””

Then came a sentence that made everyone freeze.

“You have two granddaughters. Think carefully about what happens if one of them becomes involved.””

I felt Daniel's hand close around mine.

The recording continued.

Grandma answered:

“Leave my granddaughters alone.””

Michael's voice lowered.

“Then destroy the documents.””

The recording ended.

Thomas looked at Robert.

“This is significant.””

Robert nodded.

But I couldn't stop thinking about one thing.

Michael had threatened my grandmother years ago.

He had known about the inheritance.

He had known where the records were hidden.

And now someone had followed me before the accident.

I looked at Mom.

“Did Vanessa know about this recording?””

Mom shook her head.

“I don't think so.””

“Did she know about the safe?””

“No.””

I looked at the sealed envelope.

My name was written on it.

I opened it.

Inside was another note from Grandma.

Emily, if you have found this, please remember that the person who frightens you most is not always the person who has the most power.

I swallowed.

Find the person who has been silent. They may know more than anyone.

I looked up.

“Who was silent?””

Mom's face changed.

Then she whispered:

“Your grandfather.””

I stared at her.

“My grandfather died before I was born.””

Mom shook her head.

“No, Emily. Your grandfather didn't die.””

The room went completely silent.

“He left the family twenty-nine years ago.””

I felt my heart pound.

“Why?””

Mom looked at the recording device.

“Because he discovered what Michael had done before anyone else.””

May you like

Then she added:

“And I think he has been trying to contact you.””
