Chapter 8: What Trevor Had Been Hiding
I didn't return to the house alone.
Daniel sent the investigator with me, along with an officer who had been briefed on the forged documents.
When we pulled into the driveway, the party was gone.
No children.
No music.
No beer bottles.
No relatives laughing in my living room.
The house looked strangely peaceful.
Almost normal.
That was what frightened me.
Trevor opened the front door before I reached it.
He looked exhausted.
His shirt was wrinkled.
His eyes were bloodshot.
For one second, I saw the husband I remembered.
The man who used to bring me coffee on Sunday mornings.
The man who kissed my forehead before work.
The man who once told me he'd never let anyone hurt me.
Then I remembered the emails.
The forged signature.
The insurance policy.
The plan to divorce me after taking my house.
And the illusion vanished.
"What are they doing here?"" Trevor asked, looking at the people behind me.
"Protecting me.""
His jaw tightened.
"From what?""
"You tell me.""
He glanced toward Daniel.
"Can we talk privately?""
"No.""
"Allison.""
"Everything you say is evidence now.""
His expression changed.
"You've gone too far.""
I almost laughed.
"I haven't even started.""
Evelyn appeared behind him.
She was wearing a cream-colored robe.
"My goodness.""
Her voice dripped with false concern.
"Look what you've done.""
I stared at her.
"What have I done?""
"You've turned a family matter into a legal circus.""
"You forged my signature.""
"I did not.""
"You coordinated a transfer of my house.""
"We were trying to protect it.""
"From whom?""
She looked at me.
"From you.""
The answer was so absurd that even the investigator raised an eyebrow.
I stepped inside.
The house was spotless.
Too spotless.
Every trace of the chaos had been erased.
My furniture was back where it belonged.
My living room looked staged.
My bedroom was still empty.
My bed was gone.
I looked at Trevor.
"Where is it?""
"What?""
"My bed.""
He looked away.
"Storage.""
"Give me the address.""
"Why?""
"Because it's mine.""
He didn't answer.
I turned to the investigator.
"Can you document that the property is missing?""
Trevor's head snapped toward me.
"You're really going to do this?""
"I am.""
He stepped closer.
"Allison, please.""
It was the first time I'd heard fear in his voice.
Good.
I wanted him to understand what it felt like.
"Why did you take out the life insurance policy?""
His face drained of color.
Evelyn suddenly looked at me.
"What policy?""
I smiled.
"So you didn't know about that.""
Trevor glared at me.
"Who told you?""
"That doesn't matter.""
"It wasn't what you think.""
"Then tell me what it was.""
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
I continued.
"Why did you prepare divorce papers nineteen days before I left?""
Evelyn looked at him.
Trevor looked at her.
That tiny exchange told me everything.
They had kept secrets from each other too.
Interesting.
I took out my phone.
"Why did you tell your family I was unstable?""
"I never said that.""
"You wrote it.""
His face changed.
"Where did you get those?""
"From Rebecca.""
Evelyn stepped forward.
"That woman is a liar.""
"She kept copies.""
"She's trying to destroy us.""
"No.""
I looked directly at Evelyn.
"You did that yourselves.""
For a moment, no one spoke.
Then Trevor's voice softened.
"Allison, listen to me.""
I waited.
"Everything I've done was for my family.""
There it was.
The excuse.
Not regret.
Not apology.
Duty.
He believed loving his family justified destroying his wife.
"What did I ever do to your family?""
"You wouldn't help.""
"I gave them money.""
"Not enough.""
I stared.
He realized he'd said too much.
"Not enough?""
His voice shook.
"You always had more.""
"So you decided I owed everyone?""
"They needed it.""
"Who?""
He looked at Evelyn.
She whispered, "Trevor.""
But I was done protecting him.
"How much?""
"Allison—"
"How much did your family need?""
He looked at the floor.
"Nine hundred thousand.""
I slowly nodded.
"And you planned to use my house to cover it.""
"I was going to pay it back.""
"With what?""
He had no answer.
Then I noticed something on the kitchen counter.
A small envelope.
My name was written on it.
I picked it up.
Trevor moved quickly.
"Don't.""
That one word changed everything.
I pulled the envelope away.
The investigator stepped between us.
"Sir, stay back.""
I opened it.
Inside was a copy of a document.
Not a bank statement.
Not a legal contract.
A medical report.
My medical report.
I stared at the page.
My name.
My date of birth.
A list of prescriptions.
Then a diagnosis I had never received.
A condition I did not have.
My blood went cold.
"What is this?""
Trevor said nothing.
I turned toward him.
"Why did you have a false medical report prepared in my name?""
Evelyn's face had gone completely white.
The investigator took the paper from my hand.
He read it.
Then looked at me.
"This is significant.""
"Why?""
"Because a document like this could be used to establish incapacity.""
My heart stopped.
"Incapacity?""
Daniel immediately understood.
"To argue that you couldn't make financial decisions.""
I looked at Trevor.
He didn't deny it.
He simply stared at me.
I whispered,
"You were planning to make me look mentally incompetent.""
His eyes filled with tears.
"Allison, I didn't want it to happen this way.""
I stared at him.
"This way?""
He took a step toward me.
"I thought you'd eventually understand.""
"No.""
He shook his head.
"You don't understand what my family means to me.""
I looked around the room.
At the furniture I'd bought.
The walls I'd painted.
The photographs from our wedding.
The empty place where my bed used to be.
Then I looked back at him.
"I understand perfectly.""
My voice was calm.
"You chose them.""
Trevor swallowed.
I lifted the fraudulent medical report.
"And now you've given me the one thing I needed.""
His eyes narrowed.
"What?""
I held up the paper.
"Proof that this was never just about money.""
The investigator's phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed almost immediately.
"Allison.""
I turned.
"What?""
He covered the phone with his hand.
"They found Rebecca.""
My heart jumped.
"Where?""
He looked at me.
"At Harper Family Holdings.""
"Is she okay?""
He hesitated.
"She's alive.""
A pause.
"But she says Trevor has one last document.""
I looked at my husband.
His face was empty now.
"What document?""
The investigator lowered the phone.
"Rebecca says it's the document that started all of this.""
Trevor closed his eyes.
And when he opened them again, I knew.
May you like
Whatever was hidden in that final document wasn't about the house.
It was about why Trevor had chosen me in the first place.
